Chicago Children's Choir

Chicago Children's Choir

Group.

In 1956 during the Civil Rights Movement, the late Christopher Moore founded the multiracial, multicultural Chicago Children's Choir at Hyde Park's First Unitarian Church. He believed that youth from diverse backgrounds could better understand each other-and themselves-by learning to make beautiful music together. Today's Choir is fully independent and serves all of Chicago from its home in the Chicago Cultural Center. Christopher Moore's vision of a choir combining high artistic standards with a social purpose continues to define the Choir's mission. The Choir currently serves more than 2,800 children, ages 8-18 through choirs in 45 schools, after-school programs in 8 Chicago neighborhoods and the internationally acclaimed Concert Choir. Under Artistic Director Josephine Lee, the Choir has undertaken many highly successful national and international tours, received a Chicago/Midwest Emmy Award for the 2008 documentary Songs on the Road to Freedom, and has been featured in nationally broadcast television and radio performances, most recently on NBC's Today show and the 2007 PBS series From the Top: Live from Carnegie Hall.

Chicago Children's Choir : Songs on the Road to Freedom

Review: Chicago Children's Choir honors their roots in the Civil Rights Movement with a new recording, Songs on the Road to Freedom. Much of the music comes directly from the movement while other songs are written recently, including "We Need A Word" composed by a 16-year-old member of Chicago Children's Choir. Also featured is the anti-apartheid music of South Africa, where people similarly struggled for freedom and justice.

Songlist: Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me 'Round, MLK, The Battle of Jericho, Precious Lord, Birmingham Sunday, Murder on the Road In Alabama, Run Children Run, Freedom Train, When Love Wins The Day, Strange Fruit , Ballad of Harry T. Moore, We Need A Word, Nkosi Somandla, Ilndonga Zajericho, Shosholoza, A Prayin' Spirit, We Shall Overcome, Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me 'Round (Reprise)

Chicago Children's Choir : Do You Hear The People Sing? : 1 CD : William Chin :

Chicago Children's Choir : Do You Hear The People Sing?

Review: "Do You Hear The People Sing" was recorded at the CCC's four and a half week tour of South Africa in the summer of 1996. The 44 choir members, of many races, perform spirituals, gospel songs, African, Columbian and Korean songs, "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess, and a medley of West Side Story tunes. The excitement of these live performances shines through, as does the spirit and talent of these young voices.

Chicago Children's Choir : Open Up Your Heart : 1 CD : Josephine Lee :

Chicago Children's Choir : Open Up Your Heart

Review: "Open Up Your Heart" begins with a South African song of welcome, "Vela Vela," "Shosholoza" and "Iindonga Zajericho" were taught to the Choir while in South Africa in 1996. "Toyi Toyi and Ke Nale Monna" were brought back from South Africa by group member Mollie Stone and have become part of the Choir's core repertoire. "Prelude" and "Hanuman's Heart," composed by Jai Uttal as part of the musical "Sita Ram" he was commissioned to write for the CCC, is based on the timeless Indian epic, the Ramayana. "Tatkovina" (Macedonian) and Svadba (Bulgarian) and world folksongs. Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "I Need You to Survive" underline a fundamental element of the Choir's mission: not only do we need to love and respect each other, we are also responsible for what happens to every person in the world. Renowned Artistic Director Josephine Lee directs the award-winning 3 part (Chamber, Men's Chorus and Treble) CCC in this powerful, impressive collection. Some light drums and accompaniment, orchestral on "Hanuman's Heart" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." We really like this choir, and enjoyed every cut on "Open Up Your Heart!"

Songlist: Veia Veia, I Need You To Survive, Prelude, Hanuman's Heart, The Pasture, Tatkovina, Ke Nale Monna, Svadba, Iindonga Zajericho, Shocholoza, Bridge Over Troubled Water

Chicago Children's Choir : Songs Of The Season : 1 CD : Josephine Lee / Daniel Wallenberg / Judy Hanson :

Chicago Children's Choir : Songs Of The Season

Review: "The Chicago Children's Choir is a multiracial, multicultural choral music education organization, shaping the future by making a difference in the lives of children and youth through musical excellence." This is how the directors and teachers of the CCC describe themselves and what they are trying to do, and it warms our hearts on many levels. In the very brief liner notes is a picture of the large, red-jacketed choir of beautiful, intently singing children. Inside the 15 live Christmas songs are listed: "Gesu Bambino," Sing Joyfully," "This Christmastide," "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day," "Christmas Song," "Riu, Riu Ciu," "Vehavta," "Hacia Belen va un borrico," "Appletree Wassail," "I Want the Star," "Christmas Lights," "A Take Six Christmas," "Snow," "White Christmas" and "Go Tell It on the Mountain." Josephine Lee, Artistic Director, is there in very small type. That's it-we learn from their website that the group began in 1956, the dream of the late Rev. Christopher Moore, that grew from a handful of kids in the First Unitarian Church to 3,000 kids in 61 in-school choruses, 5 after-school neighborhood choirs and this 125-voice Concert Choir. The music, the message and, of course, the children are the emphasis and the gift. Some light accompaniment.

Songlist: Processional, Gesu Bambino, Sing Joyfully, This Christmastide, Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, Christmas Song, Riu Riu Chiu, Vehavta, Hacia Belen ca un borrio, Appletree Wassail, I Want the Star, Christmas Lights, A Take Six Christmas, Snow, White Christmas, Go, Tell it on the Mountain
