Also included is a jazz chord library, a professional resource guide, a review of music fundamentals, and an index of terms and symbols. The CD includes sing-along tracks for standard songs, many of which are in two keys for different voice ranges, plus recorded examples of the performance and arranging concepts presented in the text.

Review: This book is intended for use in a first year voice class at the college or university level. Portions of it may be suitable for a voice class at the high school level, where students are interested and dedicated to learning a strong vocal technical foundation. Many would-be singers are unnecessarily anxious or nervous about singing because they lack experience and guidance. The feeling of anxiety or nervousness can be overcome easily by learning the 'how-to's' of vocal production, clearly provided here. But before delving into the 'how-to's', Voice Technique lays out the anatomical and physiological functions connected with the speaking and singing processes, so that the reader can hone in on the proper muscles and body parts in developing proper technique. In addition, this knowledge will enable singers to maintain their optimum technical skill and vocal health throughout a long singing, performing, or teaching career. The author then takes the reader clearly through the proper coordination of the four physiological systems (respiration, phonation, articulation, and resonation), in an effort to help create a beautiful tone quality in any aspiring singer. Included are abundant resources including copious diagrams, figures, worksheets, exercises, appendices and specific and practical tips in a chapter titled 'Health Concerns for Singers.'

Review: Kirby keeps busy writing arrangements for Hal Leonard. Somehow, he still finds time to sing and tour with the jazz quartet, Just 4 Kicks, and do side projects, like this video, produced under the auspices of the newly inaugurated A Cappella Foundation. His delightful presence is a great complement to his years of experience as a music educator, and helps the medicine of knowledge go down as sweet as sugar. With an introduction reflecting back to his youth listening to the radio, Kirby vividly illustrates the difference between the white music he first heard, and the black radio he then fell in love with: soul! Along with the studio audience, who demonstrate each example, we are shown how to 'mess with the melody,' using vocal ornaments such as the appoggiatura, upper and lower neighbor et cetera. In that context, Kirby also imparts information about chord structure, picking out notes within a chord and commenting on their function, right on the fly. All along he reassures us that taking risks is what it's all about. Sixty minutes of fun!
Songlist: Giving Yourself Permission, Vocal Ornamentation, Anticipation, Lower Neighbor, Upper neighbor, Appoggiatura, Passing Tones... and much, much more!, Developing your musical point of view (you are unique), Lyrics are your friend, Word Repetition, Word Painting, Listening Skills... be a detective!
Review: Ward Swingle was the product of an unusually liberal musical education. In his hometown, Mobile, Alabama, he grew up with the sound of jazz and played in one of the great Big Bands before finishing high school. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Cincinnati Conservatory and studied piano with the celebrated Walter Gieseking in postwar France. In Paris in the sixties he was a founding member of the fabled Double Six of Paris, then took to the scat singing idea and applied it to the works of Bach, hence The Swingle Singers ('The Mod Squad of Baroque Music'), whose early recordings won five Grammies. In this video Ward Swingle shares his world-renowned 'Swingle Singing' methods by conducting an a cappella master class with eight talented singers from the San Francisco Bay Area. With his instruction, guidance and example they learn and perform four of his arrangements, giving the at-home viewer practice and insight into these techniques -- techniques that have made Ward one of the most influential figures in vocal music in the Twentieth Century.

Review: Cary Fridley, the popular singer in the old-time string band The Freight Hoppers, has done extensive research into old-time vocal styles, and has studied the singing of Sara and Maybelle Carter, Hazel Dickens, Alice Gerrard, Dellie Norton, Dolly Greer and other singers of Appalachian Mountain ballads. She has put together a lesson that covers basics of vocal production: proper breathing and posture, projection, use of the diaphragm and how to project and hold notes with proper support. Cary provides exercises for getting a strong, resonant sound, showing how this music should be sung with the chest voice ('your speaking voice, but with proper support') as opposed to the head voice ('your silly voice, or falsetto'). Most importantly, these songs tell a story, and Cary shows how she phrases and interprets beautiful old-time ballads such as 'I Am Man Of Constant Sorrow,' 'A Roving On A Winter's Night' and the a cappella lament 'My Love Has Brought Me To Despair.' She also covers such topics as how to 'fix' out of tune notes, and demonstrates duet singing with Frank Lee on the Carter Family classics 'Anchored In Love' and 'Sailor On The Deep Blue Sea.'

Review: 'Breathing to Sing' is an entertaining and educational video. Breathing to a singer is the basis for the singing sound and Lori Lyford (the excellent director of the Scottsdale Chorus and well known to Sweet Adeline singers and directors) demonstrates the physical mechanics and the proper use of the diaphragm to increase and expand breath capacity. This is a 'must have' instructional DVD.

Review: Bel canto (Belcanto, bel canto) (Italian, beautiful singing), an Italian musical term, refers to the art and science of vocal technique which originated in Italy during the late sixteenth century and reached its pinnacle in the early part of the nineteenth century during the Bel Canto opera era. Bel canto singing characteristically focuses on perfect evenness throughout the voice, skillful legato, a light upper register, tremendous agility and flexibility, and a certain lyric, 'sweet' timbre. This volume embodies Madame Marchesi's 'vocal alphabet,' or basic instructions and exercises that formed the voices of her great pupils. An introductory text discusses breathing, attack, registers and similar matters, while the remainder of the book contains many exercises and vocalises that teach voice management and projection. Marchesi's book is today even more important than when it first appeared, for it offers the basis for a construction of the bel canto training system. At the time the book appeared, the bel canto system had gone out of fashion in favor of more modern schools that seemed to offer more rapid maturation, voice volume, and dramatics. Today, a more realistic reevaluation has revealed that the bel canto system gave the singer much longer performing life, a more pleasing voice, and far greater musical ability. As Phillip Miller states in his introduction, 'a solidity, a sure technical mastery, an even scale with no register break... strong, even and secure trills, their coloratura masterly.' In addition, the resurgence of interest in early 19th century opera renders a work like Marchesi's indispensable to the modern singer.

Review: This historic volume, dedicated to the great tenor and published shortly after his death, explains clearly and scientifically how Caruso achieved his phenomenal voice production. Written by a noted laryngologist and student of voice who devoted much of his career to working with Caruso and other singers, the book proposes a method of voice culture based on well-defined physiological laws. According to Dr. Marafioti, there is only one right way to sing - a method based on the scientific principles of voice culture. Although Caruso instinctively sang that way, the methods can be learned by any singer.

Review: 2010 Reprint of 1931 Edition. Giovanni Battista Lamperti (1839 -1910) was an Italian singing teacher and son of the singing teacher Francesco Lamperti. He is source for Vocal Wisdom: Maxims of Giovanni Battista Lamperti (1931). His preferred teaching arrangement was having three or four students present at each lesson: each would get their turn while the others observed and learned thereby. He was said to be a strict, exacting instructor not given to flattery, but who enthusiastically praised his students upon exceptional achievement. Many of Giovanni's students became international opera stars including Irene Abendroth, Marcella Sembrich, Ernestine Schumann-Heink, Paul Bulss, Roberto Stagno, David Bispham and Franz Nachbaur. The Technics of Bel Canto is the only book (other than the maxims recalled and published posthumously by his pupil William E. Brown) that Giovanni ever wrote on his method.
