Dr. Jan Bickel : Vocal Technique: A Physiological Approach

Review: This book is intended for use in a first year voice class at the college or university level. Portions of it may be suitable for a voice class at the high school level, where students are interested and dedicated to learning a strong vocal technical foundation. Many would-be singers are unnecessarily anxious or nervous about singing because they lack experience and guidance. The feeling of anxiety or nervousness can be overcome easily by learning the "how-to's" of vocal production, clearly provided here. But before delving into the "how-to's", Voice Technique lays out the anatomical and physiological functions connected with the speaking and singing processes, so that the reader can hone in on the proper muscles and body parts in developing proper technique. In addition, this knowledge will enable singers to maintain their optimum technical skill and vocal health throughout a long singing, performing, or teaching career. The author then takes the reader clearly through the proper coordination of the four physiological systems (respiration, phonation, articulation, and resonation), in an effort to help create a beautiful tone quality in any aspiring singer. Included are abundant resources including copious diagrams, figures, worksheets, exercises, appendices and specific and practical tips in a chapter titled "Health Concerns for Singers."

Songlist: Answers To Questions Before We Learn How To Sing, Anatomy of the Singer's Instrument: Design and Function, Establishing Correct Posture for Singers, Breath Management for Singers, The Physiology of Vocal Tone Production, Articulation for Singers, Developing Beautiful Tone Quality, Resonance and Freedom, Health Concerns For Singers, Beyond Vocal Technique - Becoming an Artistic Performer

Karen Bauer : The Essentials of Beautiful Singing: A Three-Step Kinesthetic Approach

Review: Voice research has revealed much about the singing voice, but this valuable information does not necessarily transfer into fine singing. In The Essentials of Beautiful Singing: A Three-Step Kinesthetic Approach, performer and scholar Karen Tillotson Bauer bridges this gap by reframing the complexities of voice science with a cultivated simplicity of style and terminology that speaks directly to the singer's experience of singing. With her three-step approach, Bauer integrates fact and application in a logical order, step by step. With clarity and immediate relevancy, this work takes the mystery out of singing by approaching it as a kinesthetic experience. Through the use of short verbal prompts and guided exercises, The Essentials of Beautiful Singing helps the singer discover good breath management, realize good resonance, and achieve clear enunciation. The focus throughout is on the skillful use of the body as a musical instrument, the source of fine singing. For the experienced voice teacher, choral director and singer at any level, Bauer's three-step approach offers a fresh perspective on the familiar principles of vocal function. Clear explanations of the singing processes replace vague notions, and a relevant terminology makes refined singing more accessible. The Essentials of Beautiful Singing cuts to the heart of vocal technique and challenges some common pedagogical assumptions while defining a dependable foundation for fine singing.

Songlist: Setting the Stage for the Three-Step Approach, A Precondition to Beautiful Singing, "Open Body" and Breath Management, Exhalation: Controlled Release of Air, "Open Throat" and Resonance, The Kinesthetic Experience, Resonanting on Sung Tones, Posture Preparartion, The Chiaroscuro Balance, Forward Articulation and Enunciation, Refinements toward Greater Skill, Chest Register, Head Register, Messa di Voce, Developing the Upper Range, Legato and Misicality

Mathilde Marchesi : Bel Canto: A Theoretical & Practical Vocal Method

Review: Bel canto (Belcanto, bel canto) (Italian, beautiful singing), an Italian musical term, refers to the art and science of vocal technique which originated in Italy during the late sixteenth century and reached its pinnacle in the early part of the nineteenth century during the Bel Canto opera era. Bel canto singing characteristically focuses on perfect evenness throughout the voice, skillful legato, a light upper register, tremendous agility and flexibility, and a certain lyric, "sweet" timbre. This volume embodies Madame Marchesi's "vocal alphabet," or basic instructions and exercises that formed the voices of her great pupils. An introductory text discusses breathing, attack, registers and similar matters, while the remainder of the book contains many exercises and vocalises that teach voice management and projection. Marchesi's book is today even more important than when it first appeared, for it offers the basis for a construction of the bel canto training system. At the time the book appeared, the bel canto system had gone out of fashion in favor of more modern schools that seemed to offer more rapid maturation, voice volume, and dramatics. Today, a more realistic reevaluation has revealed that the bel canto system gave the singer much longer performing life, a more pleasing voice, and far greater musical ability. As Phillip Miller states in his introduction, "a solidity, a sure technical mastery, an even scale with no register break... strong, even and secure trills, their coloratura masterly." In addition, the resurgence of interest in early 19th century opera renders a work like Marchesi's indispensable to the modern singer.

Songlist: Part One: Elementary and Progressive Exercixes for the Development of the Voice, Chromatic Slur, Diatonic Slur, Portamento, Scales, Exercises for blending the Registers, Exercises on two notes, Exercises on three notes, Exercises on four notes, Exercises on six notes, Exercises on eight notes, Chromatic Scale, Minor Scales, Exercises for Flexibility, Varied Scales, Repeated Notes, Triplets, Arpeggi, Messa di Voce (Swelled Sounds), Apoggiatura - Acciaccatura (Crushed Note) - Mordente, The Turn, The Shake (Trill), Shakes by Thirds, Part Two: Development of the Exercises in the Form of Vocalises, Attack, Portamento, Sostenuto, Diatonic Scale, Dotted Diatonic Scale, Minor Scale, and more

Style: Opera

Robert Toft : Bel Canto - A Performers Guide

Review: Bel canto, or 'beautiful singing,' remains one of the most elusive performance styles vocalists strive to master. During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, composers routinely left the final shaping of recitatives, arias, and songs to performers, and singers treated scores freely so that inexpressively notated music could be turned into passionate declamation. In other words, vocalists saw their role more as one of re-creation than of simple interpretation. Familiarity with the range of strategies prominent singers of the past employed to unlock the eloquent expression hidden in scores enables modern performers to take a similar re-creative approach to enhancing the texts before them. In this first ever guide to bel canto, author Robert Toft provides singers with the tools they need not only to complete the creative process the composer began but also to bring scores to life in an historically-informed manner. Replete with illustrations based on excerpts from Italianate recitatives and arias by composers ranging from Handel to Rossini, the book offers discussions of the fundamental principles of expressive singing, each section including a practical application of the techniques involved. Drawing on a wealth of documents from the era, including treatises, scores, newspaper reviews, and letters, this book captures the breadth of practices singers used in the bel canto period. Complete with six scores (recitatives and/or arias) for performers to personalize through the old methods, and a companion website offering demonstrations of the principles involved, Bel Canto is an essential resource for any singer or vocal instructor wishing to explore and master historical techniques of interpretation and re-creation from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Cary Fridley : Vocal Techniques for Old-Time Mountain Music

Review: Cary Fridley, the popular singer in the old-time string band The Freight Hoppers, has done extensive research into old-time vocal styles, and has studied the singing of Sara and Maybelle Carter, Hazel Dickens, Alice Gerrard, Dellie Norton, Dolly Greer and other singers of Appalachian Mountain ballads. She has put together a lesson that covers basics of vocal production: proper breathing and posture, projection, use of the diaphragm and how to project and hold notes with proper support. Cary provides exercises for getting a strong, resonant sound, showing how this music should be sung with the chest voice ("your speaking voice, but with proper support") as opposed to the head voice ("your silly voice, or falsetto"). Most importantly, these songs tell a story, and Cary shows how she phrases and interprets beautiful old-time ballads such as "I Am Man Of Constant Sorrow," "A Roving On A Winter's Night" and the a cappella lament "My Love Has Brought Me To Despair." She also covers such topics as how to "fix" out of tune notes, and demonstrates duet singing with Frank Lee on the Carter Family classics "Anchored In Love" and "Sailor On The Deep Blue Sea."

Songlist: Full Voice, Chest Voice, Chest Voice Exercises, Head Voice, Head Voices Exercises, Prettiest Little Girl in the Country, I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow, A Roving on a Winter's Night, My Life Has Brought Me To Despair, Sailor on the Deep Blue Sea, Anchored in Love

Garyth Nair : Craft of Singing

Review: A new text with two principal aims: to provide a foundation of anatomical, physiological, acoustical and medical knowledge for students in the belief that one must know how something works before one can alter or repair it, and also to carefully structure the learning of the foundational voice skills necessary for the development of each student's technique beyond the length of a single course. Borrowing from Voice Science but staying firmly centered in the studio or classroom, the text helps the reader with a raw vocal ability understand the function and care of their vocal instrument. In the second part, the book begins a carefully graduated approach in building good singing habits. Giovanni Battista Lamperti : Vocal Wisdom

Review: 2010 Reprint of 1931 Edition. Giovanni Battista Lamperti (1839 -1910) was an Italian singing teacher and son of the singing teacher Francesco Lamperti. He is source for Vocal Wisdom: Maxims of Giovanni Battista Lamperti (1931). His preferred teaching arrangement was having three or four students present at each lesson: each would get their turn while the others observed and learned thereby. He was said to be a strict, exacting instructor not given to flattery, but who enthusiastically praised his students upon exceptional achievement. Many of Giovanni's students became international opera stars including Irene Abendroth, Marcella Sembrich, Ernestine Schumann-Heink, Paul Bulss, Roberto Stagno, David Bispham and Franz Nachbaur. The Technics of Bel Canto is the only book (other than the maxims recalled and published posthumously by his pupil William E. Brown) that Giovanni ever wrote on his method.

James Jordan : The Musician's Breath

Review: In this provocative book, James Jordan examines why and how the breath is the "delivery system" for human and musical ideas in performance. "The breath," Dr. Jordan writes, "is the most magical and human thing we can engage as artists." This book makes a compelling case for the power of the breath and the power of submitting oneself to its miracles. The Musician's Breath is divided into two sections: The first discusses the "why" of breathing, while the second provides the "how" with practical applications for singers, instrumentalists, and conductors. Co-authors and Westminster Choir College colleagues, voice teachers Mark Moliterno and Nova Thomas, add their unique perspectives through chapters on yoga and other paradigms that reveal the power of the breath. A companion DVD (available separately) guides viewers through yoga practices that can provide access points to understanding breath, free points of tension, and "holding" in the breathing process. With The Musician's Breath, all musicians-from choral directors to solo instrumentalists-will deepen their understanding of the miracle of human expression through breath. This pioneering book is also a passionate and compelling call for the use of the breath as a pedagogical tool for performers of all ages and levels.

Review: Belting is a strong way of big singing that has become very popular in contemporary styles. It is heard in everything from rock to hip-hop to pop to musical theater to the plethora of award shows. However, not only is there much confusion and misinformation about how to belt well, if done poorly belting can actually damage the voice. Kendrick Jacocks : Anatomy of Bel Canto

Review: This book of the 'bel canto' series by author Kendrick Jacocks takes the anatomical and physiological route to explaining why the 'bel canto' position achieves the timbres, calibration, and control native to it. The book proves the functional aspects of the nasalis (nose muscle system), and provides detailed descriptions of the paranasal sinuses: ethmoid, sphenoid, maxillary, and frontal, and their effect on tone quality. It explains chest tensions; the connection between the pelvic floor and mask in supporting the breath, and the chest position. The books explains how to use the muscles that open and close the tone, the importance of the relaxation of the spine, and explains resonance. The book provides anecdotes from such writers, artists and teachers as Giovanni Sbriglia, Joan Sutherland, G.B. Lamperti, Regine Crespin, and Manuel Garcia. Kendrick Jacocks is a professionally active dramatic tenor, pedagogue, and critic whose life is dedicated to the practice of opera as a means of transmitting human emotion. Kirby Shaw : Kirby Shaw's Soul Clinic

Review: Kirby keeps busy writing arrangements for Hal Leonard. Somehow, he still finds time to sing and tour with the jazz quartet, Just 4 Kicks, and do side projects, like this video, produced under the auspices of the newly inaugurated A Cappella Foundation. His delightful presence is a great complement to his years of experience as a music educator, and helps the medicine of knowledge go down as sweet as sugar. With an introduction reflecting back to his youth listening to the radio, Kirby vividly illustrates the difference between the white music he first heard, and the black radio he then fell in love with: soul! Along with the studio audience, who demonstrate each example, we are shown how to "mess with the melody," using vocal ornaments such as the appoggiatura, upper and lower neighbor et cetera. In that context, Kirby also imparts information about chord structure, picking out notes within a chord and commenting on their function, right on the fly. All along he reassures us that taking risks is what it's all about. Sixty minutes of fun!

Songlist: Giving Yourself Permission, Vocal Ornamentation, Anticipation, Lower Neighbor, Upper neighbor, Appoggiatura, Passing Tones... and much, much more!, Developing your musical point of view (you are unique), Lyrics are your friend, Word Repetition, Word Painting, Listening Skills... be a detective!

Margaret Olson : The Solo Singer in the Choral Setting - A Handbook for Achieving Vocal Health

Review: While there are many similarities between solo and choral singing, they are not the same discipline, and it is important to realize the different approaches necessary for each. In The Solo Singer in the Choral Setting: A Handbook for Achieving Vocal Health, Olson presents the unique perspective of choral singing from a soloist's viewpoint, providing a clear outline of several issues facing the solo singer in the choral setting. She discusses concepts as diverse as body position in rehearsal and acoustic sound production, and she offers practical ideas for solving these challenges. Teaching examples and case studies help illustrate the problems and offer potential solutions for handling the challenges of the choral environment. After a general overview of vocal technique, the chapters address the physiological, psychological, pedagogical, acoustic, and interpretive issues facing the solo singer in the choral setting. Concepts, such as phonation; resonation and timbre; approaches to diction; voice classification; choral blend; interpreting emotion; relationships among choral conductor, singer, and teacher of singing; and the use of vibrato are examined in detail. Concluding with a conversation with two choral conductors, as well as a glossary, bibliography, and index, this volume is beneficial to singers, teachers, and conductors alike.
