Based on the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition (Z. 15009), this volume includes Bartók's complete works for male voices. The lyrics in this Urtext edition are in the original languages and in the translations authorized by the composer. Literal English translations are provided in the appendix, which also includes the early version of Four Hungarian Folk Songs and the German version of movements 3 to 6 from Székely Folk Songs. The edition is complete with an informative preface (in Hungarian, English, and German) and detailed Editorial Comments (in Hungarian and English). The Comments give an overview of the textual, folk-music, and compositional sources, and provide detailed information on the performance practice of Bartók's choral works. For the first piece that I wrote for the Estonian National Men's Choir (RAM) in 2006 I set Silva Caledonia, one of 40 Sonnets from Scotland by the Scottish poet Edwin Morgan, and in 2008 I added two more. Edwin Morgan was a very fine poet indeed, a virtuoso in all the forms he used, and was the Scottish Poet Laureate (he died in 2010). All these sonnets follow faithfully the sonnet's defining 14 line format and are based in structure on the sonnets of Petrarch. I have set a number of Petrarch sonnets for my second and fourth books of madrigals and, just like Petrarch, Edwin Morgan breaks the 14 lines in two parts - an 'octave' and a 'sestet', contrasting the two parts rhythmically and with a rhyme scheme as 2x4 and 2x3. Memento and The Summons, the other two pieces in this collection, draw on the experience of having worked with the choir. These two sonnet settings, in much simpler forms than here, were originally part of my piano concerto. The presence of a male chorus within the concerto represents a kind of homage to Busoni, a composer whom I have always admired and whose piano concerto has a men's chorus in the last movement. I had used a chorus of Russian bass voices in my double bass concerto, so there is precedence within my own work. My choice of the poetry of the great Scottish poet Edwin Morgan alludes to my other work with male choirs, having already set six of his Sonnets from Scotland by this time. The two sonnets are heard in their entirety in the concerto, and one of them - The Solway Canal - gives a subtitle to the concerto, just as Kukol'nik's Farewell to St Petersburg gives a subtitle to the double bass concerto. Guillaume de Machaut was an important fourteenth-century French poet and composer. The four-part Messe de Nostre Dame is historically significant as the earliest example of a complete, stylistically coherent, through-composed setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer. The setting has close connections with Reims Cathedral and is thought to have been composed in the early 1360s, becoming a memorial mass on the death of Machaut's brother in 1372. It would most likely have been performed by unaccompanied solo male voices, and the suggested scoring for modern performance is two altos and two tenors or two tenors and two baritones. The five movements of the Mass are followed by a short dismissal, Ite missa est.

First premiered by the King's Singers in Queen Elizabeth Hall these compositions are a delight and will be a welcome addition to your repertoire. English text by William Rands and Lewis Carroll. Difficult.

In this book, the tenor part is suitable in range for either changed voices or those unchanged boys' voices which are usually assigned to a low alto part. The baritone part lies within the easy range of voices even in junior high school and is effective when sung by adult male choruses who may be lacking tenors but yet have a good many basses. The bass part is also not too low for the average low baritone voice, thus making it possible for a few of the lower voices to cope with the bass. The material in the book is suitable for average concert glee club programming, and can be employed for boys' groups just learning to sing in three parts.

The Vagabond is based on words written by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894). With their saucy praise of the life on the road and the freedom of nature, they are reminders of the ancient traditions of the wanderer. But the musical elaboration is far from being just simple and popular : Ralph Vaughan Williams employs refined means of composition, in order to realize varied colors and moods ; and he offers the voice the possibility to sing magnificent phrasing and to evoke strong emotional impact.

Motet for double male chorus with organ, ad lib. Described as religious song by Schumann, the motet Verzweifle nicht was first performed with organ on July 4, 1850, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary St. Pauli, the choral society at the University of Leipzig. A version with orchestral accompaniment was premiered in 1853. In a letter to Schumann, Herrmann Langer, the conductor of both premieres, called the motet one of the most stimulating and inspiring creations in male-voice literature.

Robert Sund's Gentlemen Only is a varied collection for men's choir, covering all genres from pop to gospel and jazz to classical music. It contains, among others, a vocal arrangement of Brahms'' Hungarian Dance No. 5 as well as "She's Leaving Home" by the Beatles or Piaf's "La vie en Rose." In the last decades, Sund arranged all the pieces for his chamber choir "Orphei Drangar." Now these successful arrangements, most of which have been released on CD, are available for men's choir. Some of the arrangements contain piano accompaniment and solos. The program can be complemented by choreographies or scenic performances.

Commissioned by Matti Hyokki and the YL Helsinki Male Voice Choir, Lamentation uses extracts from one of six laments by Peter Abelard (1079 - 1142) which were found in a manuscript that was only discovered in 1830 in the Vatican. Helen Waddell, in the accompanying notes to her translation of the text, suggests that in this searing meditation on one of the most controversial and multi-faceted Biblical passages (II Samuel 1:17-27), 'Abelard's passion, that never escaped in his strange, remote letters to Heloise, for once awakes and cries'. Although written with particular reference to David, slayer of Goliath, and Jonathan, son of King Saul, it is the ecumenical sentiment of loss felt by persons of any faith or none that pervades Abelard's beautiful Latin text and, indeed, my rendering of his words.

Veljo Tormis is an Estonian composer, regarded to be one of the greatest living choral composers and one of the most important composers of the 20th century in Estonia. Internationally, his fame arises chiefly from his extensive body of choral music, which exceeds 500 individual choral songs, most of it a cappella. The great majority of these pieces are based on traditional ancient Estonian folksongs (regilaulud), either textually, melodically, or merely stylistically. This work for men's voice is challenging yet very worthwhile.

The Story of the Bishop and the Pagan, drawn from musical documents and folklore, tells of the death of the British warrior and Christian missionary Bishop Henry at the hands of the Finnish peasant farmer Lalli near the town of Turku (Abo) in the winter of 1158. By a fortunate and unusual historical circumstance, the viewpoints of both sides have been preserved: a written Latin Gregorian chant "The Sequence Of Saint Henry" documents the British Christian side, and numerous folk songs represent the event as seen by the Finnish pagan. A fascinating and rewarding work for unaccompanied male voices.

The texts for this composition have been compiled from runic songs about the sea, using source material from Haljala, Kuusalu, Ridala and Muhu in Estonia. The written transcriptions of the texts, translated from the vernacular, were made in 1973-74.

Kenneth Jennings' settings of two Dylan Thomas poems 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night,' and And Death Shall Have No Dominion' are both beautiful arrangements. 'Loch Lomond' is a Scottish folk song that dates back to the Jacobite Rebellion. Care has been taken to preserve the authenticity of the language in this arrangement, with the help of a ipa chart in the performance notes of this chart. With an energetic, strong opening and a more lyric, gentle section in the middle, 'Alleluia' provides an overall sense of the joy we experience while praising god. 'Let the Bullgine Tun,' a vigorous, humorous, traditional sea chantey is guaranteed to delight both singers and audiences.
