Henry Leck

An internationally recognized choral director, Henry Leck is an associate professor and Director of Choral Activities at Butler University where he conducts the Butler University Choir and teaches conducting and music education classes. Mr. Leck is widely known as a specialist in choral techniques, the child's voice and boy's changing voice. He is a regular guest faculty member at various universities, such as Westminster Choir College, Universities of Wisconsin, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Missouri, North Carolina, Southern Illinois, Belmont University, Akron University, Berkeley Pacific School of Religion, and Appalachian State University.

In 1986 he became the Founder and Artistic Director of the Indianapolis Children's Choir which is now a program of approximately 1200 children in twelve choirs in residence at Butler University in Indianapolis and two affiliate choirs, plus an early childhood division. Since its inception, the choir has become one of the premiere music education and performing organizations having performed often by audition for national professional music organizations, such as the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) 1989/1993/1997, Music Educators National Conference (MENC) 1988/1994, the Organization of American Kodaly Educators (OAKE) 1993/1999, the American Orff-Schulwerk Assoc. (AOSA) 1993, the Collegiate Music Society (CMS) and the National Music Librarians Association. In addition, the choir has performed concert tours in Wales, England, Scotland, France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Australia, Norway, New Zealand, Canada, Argentina, Brazil and throughout the United States, including four performances in Carnegie Hall, 1990/1994/1996/1997. In addition to its own concert series, the choir performs regularly with professional symphony orchestras, including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and has shared the stage with various professional ensembles, such as the world-famous Canadian Brass and The Chieftains. The Indianapolis Children's Choir has made a number of professional recordings, including the acclaimed "Rejoice, with Brass and Voice" with the Canadian Brass.

Mr. Leck founded the Indiana All-State Children's Honor Choir and the Indiana Middle/Junior High School Honors Choir which he conducted for three years each. He has conducted Mixed, Men's, Women's, Junior High and Children's All-State Choirs and festival choirs in nearly every state. He is also a frequent conductor of regional and national honors choirs. He has conducted the ACDA Southern, Southwest, North Central and Northwest Divisional Honors Choirs and will be conducting the Northwest Division Junior High Honor Chioir in 2002. In 2001 ad 2002, he will be conducting the Pacific Rim Festival in Hawaii. He regularly conducts the National Youth Choral Festival in Carnegie Hall. In 1994 and 1997 he conducted the National Youth Choral Festival Children's Choir in the National Festival of the Arts in the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC with Lucas Foss and the Academy of music in Philadelphia with Leonard Slatkin. In 1996 he conducted the OAKE National Children's Honor Choir and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1998 he conducted OAKE National Choir again in New Orleans. He conducts in Europe frequently including the Musica Mundi Tuscany Festival in 2000 and conducts the International Children's Choral Festival in Canterbury and York, England annually. He has conducted theCurso Internacional de Regencia Coral in Rio de Janeiro the Cuerso International de Regencia Coral in Sao Paulo and was a Clinician for the Australian National Choral Association and the Royal School of Church Music Summer School of Choral Trainers and Conductors, and the International Choral Workshop in Stavanger,Norway. Mr. Leck is certified as a "Kodaly"instructor and is an active member of ACDA, OAKE, MENC and Pi Kappa Lambda.
