Contemporary A Cappella Christmas Music

Yeah, OK, so most Christmas music is reserved for one particular time of the year. But Contemporary a cappella Christmas music has a seasonless quality that makes it great in December, and terrific fun in June, too. Even timeless classics get a contemporary, rockin' edge from these groups, and the originals are modern songs that happen to be about that happiest time of the year. If you're a fan of contemporary a cappella, you won't go wrong with the albums we carry here, even if holiday music isn't your thing.

Nylons : A Wish For You

Review: The second Nylons Christmas CD, comprising ten tracks, half written by the group. Those familiar with the Nylons' sound know that they have used rhythm tracks on past recordings. Well, the percussion on 'A Wish For You' is vocal, with Wes Carroll of the House Jacks guesting on two songs. The Nylons are one of the original contemporary a cappella groups, who have continued to perform and tour, write and record for over twenty years. The group has only gotten better with time, displaying heart and integrity that inspire audiences from their native Canada, and throughout the world. Produced by Ian Prince.

Songlist: Celebration, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, A Wish For You, O Come All Ye Faithful, Hold On To The Feeling, Away In A Manager, Make It Easy, Love Peace Harmony, Angels We Have Heard On High, Huron Christmas Carol

Nylons : Harmony, The Christmas Songs

Review: The Nylons are one of the original contemporary a cappella groups. Their many years of experience have produced a vast playbook of stylistic variations, along with consistently excellent musicianship. This subtly-accompanied 1994 release reflects this abundance. The arrangements are generally simple, and the songlist contains the Christmas standards - "Silent Night," "The Christmas Song," "I'll Be Home For Christmas" etc. - plus a Nylons original, "What Does Christmas Mean To Me." The emphasis is on the quality of the voices, as the group members are gifted singers individually as well as collectively, and are able to convey the sentiment of this special time of year with heartfelt feeling. Founding members Arnold Robinson and Claude Morrison are joined by Gavin Hope and Garth Mosbaugh.

Songlist: Carol of the Bells, O Holy Night, Silent Night, The Christmas Song, The Little Drummer Boy, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, What Child is This, The First Noel, What Does Christmas Mean to Me, The Secret of Christmas, I'll Be Home for Christmas

Octappella : Christmas

Review: The fourth excellent CD by Utah-based, all male Contemporary octet Octappella, who apply their trademark intricate, tight harmonies, cutting-edge arrangements and bright, solid vocal percussion to 13 Christmas favorites. Jester Hairston's "Mary's Little Boy Child," the wonderful original "Come and See" by group member Matt Cropper (who also does a lot of Octappella's arrangements), a marvelous arrangement of "O Come All Ye Faithful," a sizzling, jazzy rendition of Sammy Cahn's "Let It Snow," Jay Althouse's spirited foot-tapper "Whisper! Whisper!," a pair of innovative Deke Sharon arrangements, "O Come O Come Emanuel" and "Sleigh Ride," "O Holy Night," another nice original, "Christmas Time," by group member Wes Brewer; and the spirited "Child of God" by Emily Crocker are immediate favorites. But "Stars Were Gleaming," "Once in Royal David's City" and "Joy to the World" are also incredible, as if we are hearing these standards for the first time. A brilliant, fun, seemingly effortless, envelope-pushing collection-one of the best we've heard this year!

Songlist: Mary's Little Boy Child, Come And See, O Come All Ye Faithful, Let It Snow, Stars Were Gleaming, Whisper! Whisper!, O Come O Come Emmanuel, Sleigh Ride, O Holy Night, Christmas Time, Child Of God, Once In Royal David's City, Joy To The World

Pentatonix : PTXmas

Review: Groundbreaking southern California winners of NBC's The Sing-Off, season 3, mixed (1 woman, 4 men) quintet Pentatonix has re-addressed the a cappella envelope with their transformation of pop hits and innovative arrangements. Just in time for the season, the group ducked into the recording studio and left this brightly-wrapped all a cappella 6-song EP under our tree, and we have to say, PTX has re-invented the Christmas album! Cut 1 is a stunning, beatboxed, hip-hopped, driving version of "Angels We Have Heard On High" that is unlike any carol we've ever heard; #2, "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is a powerfully dramatic, rhythmic arrangement with roaring wind effects; #3 "Carol Of The Bells" drives and soars like Santa after a few drinks on the Interstate, #4 "The Christmas Song" is a bluesy finger-popper with a sweet tenor lead and even some faux trombone; #5 "O Holy Night" is more traditional, harmonic, soaring and sweet, and #6 "This Christmas" is a romantic, driving pop hit that promises big changes in the relationship this season. Pentatonix clearly has the vocal chops, arranging talent and the (circular Christmas tree ornaments) to use them. Watch out, Santa!

Songlist: Angels We Have Heard on High, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Carol of the Bells, The Christmas Song, O Holy Night, This Christmas

Pentatonix : That's Christmas To Me bestseller

Review: Four men, one woman Pentatonix, Season 3 Sing-Off Champs, places a sumptuous slice of holiday cheer on our mantelpiece, "That's Christmas to Me." Some of our favorites among the 10 cuts are reinvented traditional hymns like the opening cut "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "Mary Did You Know," and "Silent Night;" popular Christmas songs like "Sleigh Ride," a "Winter Wonderland"/"Don't Worry, Be Happy" medley that features guest artist Tori Kelley, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy;" and three songs new to our ears: Robin Pechnold's "White Winter Hymnal," Robert Lopez & Kristen Anderson-Lopez's "Let It Go," and the beautiful, nostalgic title track, written by Pentatonix. One of our favorite Sing-Off winners, Pentatonix truly celebrates the human voice with stunning arrangements, unbelievable leads and harmonies and vocals that redefine a cappella. Don't miss this one!

Songlist: Hark The Herald Angels Sing, White Winter Hymnal, Sleigh Ride, Winter Wonderland, That's Christmas To Me, Mary Did You Know?, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Silent Night, Let It Go

Rajaton : Jouluyo

Review: In our imaginary top drawer of a cappella ensembles who have shown us, again and again, sheer vocal talent, whimsical cutting edge arrangements, effortless harmonies, sublime leads and exquisitely crafted recordings, we search around, past several well-played Real Group CDs, to happily find a handful of albums by Finnish mixed-voice sextet Rajaton. One of the first ones to blow us away, despite its dearth of English lyrics, was "Joulu," the group's hugely successful Christmas album. Well, it's been a long wait, but we hold in our hot little mittens "Jouluyo," Rajaton's second holiday CD, with seven new and seven familiar Christmas songs, in both Finnish and English! Our favorites are of course the English selections, a joyous, surprising "Hark the herald angels sing," a moving, bluenote "The little drummer boy," and Soila Sariola's arrangements of Stephen Hatfield's haunting, magical "Lullay" and Howard Blake's "Walking on Air." But don't miss the songs with Finnish titles like Kurt Noack's "Tonttuparaati," Jussi Chydenius and Einari Vuorela's soaring "Kuu Hohtaa," Leri Leskinen and Timo Liiskinen's "Taivaanvalkea" and many others. "Oi jouluyo" gives Finnish lyrics to the classic "O Holy Night" and "Tuo armon valkokyyhky" is Michael Praetorius' "Lo, How a Rose e'er Blooming." "Tonttuparaati" is an amazing Finnish medley of several Christmas tunes, we picked out "Wooden Soldiers on Parade" and others whose titles escape us for the moment. We'll just say that "Jouluyo" is a magical collection that delights on so many levels-don't miss this one! Generous full-color liner notes have all lyrics and info.

Songlist: Tonttuparaati, Kuninkaat kulkevat, katsokaa!, The little drummer boy, Me kaymme joulun viettohon, Kirje Joulupukille, Lullay, Kuu hohtaa, Taivaanvalkea, Walking in the air, Oi jouluyo, Tuo armon valkokyyhky, Hiljainen jouluyo

Return 2 Zero : Snowfall

Review: Return To Zero's new Christmas CD is an upgrade to "Our First Christmas." They have added 2 new songs, "Snowfall," the title track, and "When the meadow was Bloomin'," an amazing 8 part arrangement by Marshall Webb. Returning are "Humbug," "We Three Kings," "Carol Of The Bells" (for which Doug Tell won a CASA for best arrangement in 1996), "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Away In A Manger," "Our First Christmas," "What Child Is This?," "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," "Unto Us" and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas." The elaborate chord structures and unique arranging skills of these guys will put a twist on some of your favorite Christmas songs and will put you right in the Christmas spirit!

Rockapella : A Rockapella Holiday

Review: The perfect gift to us from "America's Leading A Cappella Group, "A Rockapella Holiday" has arrived just in time for Christmas, and we think we saw a fat dude with a white beard joining in with this legendary all-male a cappella quintet, singing bass! The CD follows the critically acclaimed "Bang" as their 14th soulful release, and it features 12 wonderfully arranged cuts that stay true to their trademark Contemporary sound, which melds soul, rock and r&b. Some favorites are "Angels We Have Heard on High," a very silly "Christmas Don't Be Late (The Chipmunk Song)," "I Have a Little Dreidel," "Matunda Ya Kwanzaa," "Jingle Bell Rock," "Ukranian Carol," "Little Drummer Boy," "Christmas Altogether," the very politically correct "Happy Christmas-Hanu-Kwanzaa Holiday," and the heart-tugging "Auld Lang Syne.;" but every song is a stone winner. Arranger and high tenor Jeff Thacher feels the album "finally captured the spirit of our live holiday concerts, from the edge to the warmth to the fun." Rockapella's feeling of wonder at the holidays comes through bigtime in "A Rockapella Holiday," so don't forget to open this very special musical gift from one of our longtime favorite groups!

Songlist: Auld Lang Syne, Angels We Have Heard On High, Christmas Altogether, Christmas Don't Be Late (The Chipmunk Song), I Have a Little Dreidel, Jingle Bell Rock, Happy Christma-Hanu-Kwanzaa Holiday, Matunda Ya Kwanzaa, Little Drummer Boy, O Little Town Of Bethlehem, Ukranian Christmas Carol, Wonderful Christmastime

Rockapella : Christmas

Review: One of our most favorite groups (who don't need any introduction, we're sure) graces this holiday season with a dozen songs which cover the entire spectrum of aural moods from past to present. Opening with a sweetly lilting "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day" which captures the traditional spirit with only a touch of Rockapellan embellishment we proceed to a Thatcherized (clever light vocal percussion), upbeat, Scott Leonard song which has one wondering just which year it became a big hit. It did, didn't it? It must have, it just sounds so familiar. We immediately are segued into an almost vaudevillian "Glow Worm/It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" medley. Through beautiful tradition and several of Scott Leonard's original compositions our heart strings are plucked to a fare-the-well. At the end of this grand recording we have Scott's "Hold Out for Christmas" which has only been released prior to this CD on one of the Rockapella Japanese imports. Then are sent off with our harmony hats in hand by Barry Carl's unbelievable bass and Jeff Thatchers pyrotechnics on "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch." This seasonal recording will add a sparkle of joy to your holiday.

Songlist: I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, The Hope We Hold, Glow Worm / It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas, Silver Bells, Christmas Without You, Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Winter Wonderland, The Christmas Song, White Christmas, Hold Out For Christmas, You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch

Rockapella : Comfort And Joy

Review: From the first notes of "Little Mary Snowflake," as the Rockapella sound washes over our eager ears, we notice a subtle change that becomes much more obvious in the next cut, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." There's a new member of the group, George Baldi (replacing Barry Carl) who sings a growly-mean deep bass on a tight scat-percussion solo. Next comes a couple of new songs, the sweet, romantic "Merry Christmas Darling" and "Love and the Lights." George sings a delicious Crosby-esque lead on the classic "I'll Be Home For Christmas." Then another fresh new Christmas song with some soaring Rockapella blends, "This Christmas Day." One of our favorites, "There's No Place Like Home For the Holidays," is sung as a jazzy, doo-woppy thing with a vocal Salvation Army band solo. "Please Come Home For Christmas," a soulful bluesy lament, features George's hilarious Elvis "romantic mumbling" parody. An upbeat, moving "Rock Around The Christmas Tree" has some surprising harmonic whistling. A driving "Snow Star," another sweet new song, "Peace on Earth," and finally "It's A Small World" is Rockapellized, with sampling, vocal percussion and that sublime, soaring trademark harmony. We loved Rockapella's first Christmas CD, and we love "Comfort!"

Songlist: Little Mary Snowflake, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer , Merry Christmas, Darling, Love & The Lights, I'll Be Home For Christmas, This Christmas Day, Home For the Holidays, Please Come Home For Christmas, Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree, Snowstar, Peace On Earth, It's A Small World After All

Solstice : Winter Solstice

Review: Veteran all-women septet, and one of our favorite World/Folk groups, we watched Solstice do the Bay Area proud by winning the Regional and placing 3rd in the 2007 National Finals. Urged by their friends and families to release a Holiday CD, the group finally and happily fulfilled this longtime dream, and Becca, Emily, Kim, Krista, Lark, Mari & Sara did it wonderfully! Choosing little-known, difficult classical tunes like Cortland Bender's lovely "Rosa Mystica," Francisco Guerrero's "A Un Nino Llorando Al Hielo" and Thomas Weelkes' "To Shorten Winter's Sadness," from the 15th and 16th centuries; beautifully arranged traditional carols like Bernard de la Monnoye's "Patapan," "Deck the Hall," and Franz Gruber's "Silent Night;" and popular Christmas songs like Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time is Here," Tommie Connor's "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and Alfred Burt's "Caroling, Caroling;" along with the rich traditional Hebrew song "S'Vivon" and other favorites, make "Winter Solstice" a very special 15-cut collection that is sure to brighten your holiday for years to come!

Songlist: Nowell, Nowell, Out of Your Sleep, Deck the Hall, S'Vivon, Rosa Mystica, Corpus Christi Carol, Patapan, Nova, Nova, Ave Fit Ex Eva, Christmas Time is Here, Tyrley, Tyrlow!, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, A Un Nino Llorando Al Hielo, Caroling, Caroling, Jul, Jul, To Shorten Winter's Sadness, Silent Night

Sonos : December Songs

Review: Since Moira Smiley and VOCO's surprise win at the 2007 Harmony Sweeps Finals, NBC's launch of their new hit "The Sing-Off," based on the Sweeps, and the runaway hit "Glee," Los Angeles seems to have become a musical hotbed, an a cappella Mecca if you will. In the thick of this vocal revolution, rising like sweet harmonic cream out of UCLA's crazed a cappella scene in 2008, 3-man, three-woman Sonos performed their debut concert at a hotel cafe, and released their debut CD, "SonoSings." Group member Jessica Freedman: "We do our best to defy stereotypes." Ben McLain: "The whole approach has been to distance ourselves from kitsch." Rachel Bearer: "And we don't go 'dow.'" Freedman explains: "That's one of the words vocal groups use to emulate an instrument, like a guitar, with a made-up syllable." Sonos' sound is clean and rich, resonating with technically augmented vocal percussion, perfect leads and a surprising blend of intricately arranged harmonies. The result is a powerful, moving experience that invites comparison with such artists as the Real Group, Vox One and The Idea of North. There are 10 cuts here, and we had to listen two or three times to the album to fully appreciate songs like Priscilla Bearer's original "Ave Maria," Bates & Alfred Burt's "All on a Christmas Morning," Jessica's original "Come December," the traditional tunes "O Holy Night," "Greensleeves," "I Saw Three Ships," "Come Thou Font of Every Blessing" and "Janette Isabella," all very non-traditionally arranged; another stunning Priscilla Bearer original, "For Samuel," and Ben McClain's haunting (possibly synthesizer accompanied) "Home." Amazing. One of the best we've heard this year (or ever). "December Songs" is what the LA a cappella revolution sounds like!

Songlist: Ave Maria, All on a Christmas Morning, Come December, O Holy Night, Greensleeves, I Saw Three Ships, Come thou Fount of every Blessing, Janette Isabella, For Samuel, Home

Spirit : Holiday Music - Unplugged

Review: Thirteen holiday favorites from the Kansas-based inspirational ensemble, Spirit. The sound of these ten male and female voices is nicely balanced among the registers, with group members trading off on lead vocal duties, sometimes as a duet. The Wichita Community Children's Choir helps out "Because It's Christmas." A coy, Betty Boop interpretation of "Santa Baby" and a bluesy, piano bar rendition of "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" are a pleasant contrast to the frequently-accompanied carols. A cappella versions of "I'll Be Home For Christmas," "An Evening In December," and "Snowfall," are highlights.

Songlist: I'll Be Home for Christmas, An Evening in December, Grown Up Christmas, Because It's Christmas, Mary, Did You Know, Away in a Manger, Snowfall, It's Always Been About Love, It Must've Been the Mistletoe, No More Blue Christmas, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, Santa Baby, What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?

Standards : A Standards Christmas/ A Night To Remember

Review: We have been wowed by these five brothers from Idaho, twice when they nearly won the Harmony Sweeps, by their first 3 CDs, and now, even more so, by "A Night," their Christmas CD. We join the guys singing "Let Ring Out the Bells" on the street on a snowy evening, where they see a homeless man and a boy, Julian. They sing a wonderfully Doo-Woppy "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and the Beach Boys' "Little Saint Nick" for them, then they take Julian on a walking odyssey to find the true meaning of Christmas. On the way they harmonize on "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," "White Christmas," "Carol of the Bells," "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," "O Holy Night," "Silent Night" and the piano-accompanied "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" as beautifully as we have ever heard these songs. The interactions with Julian and the guys are touching and profound, but if you'd just like to hear the tunes, a second CD with just the songs is included. A truly magical "Night!"

Songlist: Let Ring Out The Bells, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Little Saint Nick, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, White Christmas, Carol of the Bells, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Luke 2, O Holy Night, Silent Night, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

With an extremely busy touring schedule they are one of the most popular a cappella groups performing today and these years of seasoning shows in the tight arrangements, fine voices and compelling energy of this recording. This recording is a Holiday treat and is sure to be a cappella classic. Cello Greene, Cobbie Caillat and the voice of Otis Redding are also featured.

Performances on NBC's Today Show, Jay Leno, Shawn Colvin and Garrison Keillor have propelled album sales to more than 2 million copies (mostly sold from the back of their trailer) and thousands of loyal fans. Tonic Sol-fa : On Top of the World

Review: Probably the most rocking and swinging holiday release of the 2007 season this is one fun a cappella Christmas recording. Along with a number of traditional holiday classics the group has written some great original tunes including the infectious "King of Glory", "On This Christmas Night" and the delightful "Come To Save The World". Always known for their high-energy concerts and dynamic stage presence this recording also demonstrates their considerable arranging skills as well. "Happy Holiday", another Irving Berlin Christmas classic, gets a wonderful treatment as does the upbeat "Ay Ay Ay It's Christmas". "Rockin' on Top of the World" will have you dancing around the Christmas tree and the recording closes with a sweet live version of "Baby King".

Tonic Sol-fa : Sugarue

Review: The hard working Contemporary male quartet Tonic Sol Fa brings us an envelope-pushing Christmas CD, "Sugarue." They took eight traditional carols, "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "Joy to the World," "Joseph's Song," "I Saw Three Ships," "O Come All Ye Faithful," "The First Noel," "Silent Night," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "The Little Drummer Boy," and added strong vocal percussion, jazzy arrangements and their own blend of butter-smooth harmonies. To this they added a pair of original Christmas songs, "Joseph's Song" and "Sno" written by group member Shaun Johnson. The result is as fresh as a new-fallen snow-but let there be no mistake, the feeling and love that is at the heart of all these carols is still abundantly there. Sugarue is a treat, and it has our early vote for best Christmas CD of the year!

Various Artists : Sing Off: Harmonies for the Holidays

Review: "The Sing-Off," based on our beloved Harmony Sweepstakes, is putting a cappella on America's Prime Time Doorstep, and drawing huge viewing audience numbers for NBC. Some very bright person from the show in Hollywood got the very good idea of recording a Christmas CD featuring the 10 groups still in the running for the Sing-Off 2010 championship. Thus we have in our hands a unique Christmas album, a "best of the Sing-Off best," if you will! Beginning with Pitch Slapped's upbeat, spirited cover of "Joy To The World," On The Rocks' sweet, harmonious "White Christmas" and The Backbeats' powerful "O Holy Night," we continue with Eleventh Hour's classic Pop cover of "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town," Men Of Note's ringing "The First Noel," Yale's Whiffenpoofs' intricately arranged and harmonized "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," Committed's surprising bluenote arrangement of "Angels We Have Heard On High," Jerry Lawson & Talk of The Town's Motown-flavored "Silent Night," Harmony Sweeps champs Groove For Thought's wonderful "We Three Kings/O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" medley and Street Corner Symphony's driving vocal percussion gem "Auld Lang Syne." As we saw so many times at the Sweeps National Finals, each of these groups is marvelous in their own way, and we could only be sure as we heard their sets that we didn't envy the judges. But for now, let us take home and treasure this unique Christmas album from ten of the best a cappella groups in the country, and bless The Sing-Off, a beautifully-wrapped gift to a cappella music!

Various Artists : Sing-Off: Songs of the Season

Review: Now in its third year, The Sing-Off, NBC's smash series based on our own annual Harmony Sweepstakes, just keeps getting better and better. The show went weekly on primetime in 2011, and set out to find the country's best a cappella groups by holding auditions in four major cities, and this shows in both the quantity and quality of this year's contestants. "Songs of the Season is a very Contemporary Christmas album of 13 cuts, some of our favorites are old favorites that sound completely new, such as Dartmouth Aires' big fun take on Doo-Wop take on "Up on the Housetop," Pentatonix' "We Three Kings," and U of Rochester Yellowjackets' "Carol of the Bells." Sonos' "Coventry Carol" has a wonderful harmonic blend that sounds accompanied, giving it an urban sound while respecting its original haunting lyrics; Vocal Point's "Infant Lowly, Infant Holy" is stunningly pure and lovely; "Winter Wonderland" is another chestnut taken in a bright, new Doo-Wop direction by North Shore. "In the Bleak Midwinter," is given a beautiful, subtle arrangement by Kinfolk, building to a powerful, complex harmonic blend; and we would have to give Urban Method the award for "most innovative" with their Hip-Hop take on "I Saw Three Ships." "Jingle Bells," the bonus track by last year's winners Committed, is given a sweet, urban edge, and serves as icing on the cake to this delightful, envelope-pushing collection! The quest, if you will, of the Harmony Sweepstakes since its founding 27 years ago has been to showcase the ultimate instrument, the human voice, and the Sing-Off has carried on this quest to a huge, admiring audience, which can only grow with great CDs like "Songs of the Season." And what can we say, but "Bravo!"

Vocaluptuous : All Wrapped Up onsale

Review: Five man-one woman Vocaluptuous is one of the best-known a cappella groups in Singapore. They put on Singapore's first a cappella musical, "No Strings Attached," under the direction of a very talented musical director, Juliette Lay. The attractive, youthful group has a light, contemporary, jazzy sound, with sweet vocals and tight vocal percussion. "Jingle Bells" is an amazingly arranged joy, as is a surprising, blue-note, rap-flavored "Hark the Herald Angels Sing." a rich, sumptuous "The Christmas Song," a pop-sampled "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," a brilliant, minor-key "Do You Hear What I Hear," "Silent Night" as a laid-back reggae beach anthem, the heartbreak of "Last Christmas"- each tune is a thoughtfully-arranged, perfectly performed gem. One of our favorite Christmas CDs of the year, and highly recommended!

Songlist: Jingle Bells, Quando (Someday), Hark the Herald Angels Sing, The Christmas Song, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Do You Hear What I Hear, Silent Night, Last Christmas, O Holy Night, African Noel / O Sifuni Mungu

Voice Male : Jingles

Review: A sextet from Utah, Voice Male performs all of the Christmas standards with aplomb, and as well as several idiosyncratic tracks that reveal a mischievious side to their natures. Two poems (?), one of which, "The Christmas Tree Was Green And Bright," mentions the Swedish bikini team (?) and dismisses any notion of predicatability coming from this group, gives way to a stellar "Angels We Have Heard On High"; "Homeless" comforts us with the true meaning of Christmas. The unexpected countermelodies of "O Holy Night" and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" are just two examples of the creative flourishes that ornament these familiar carols, elevating them from the ordinary to the distinctive.

Songlist: Jingle Bell Rock, The Little Drummer Boy, The Christmas Song, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Winter Wonderland, Jamaican Noel , Silent Night, The Christmas Tree Was Green And Bright, Angels We Have Heard On High, Homeless, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer, Christmas Chopsticks, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, O Holy Night , Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Voice Male : Jingles 2

Review: Utah-based six-man Voice Male has released seven CDs to date, including the self-produced "Jingles", which won the 1999 CARA for Best Holiday Album. Luckily, this encouraged the guys to do a sequel! Much of the arranging on these 15 songs is by group member Mike Beardon, who has a mischievious streak and a refreshing irreverence - cue the Doo-Woppy "White Christmas," sassy, silly "Baby It's Cold Outside," a live (with Mike's daughter Casie) "Rudolph," a very strange "Tractin' in a Winter Wonderland," and "The Chipmunk Song." They can play it straight too-note the faux trumpets on "I'll Be Home for Christmas," the King's Singers' arrangement of "Jingle Bells," sweet "Away in a Manger" and more. Will CARAs fit in 6 stockings?

Songlist: Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Joy to the World, Away in a Manger, White Christmas, Carol of the Bells, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, Baby, It's Cold Outside, I'll be Home For Christmas, Hark! The Herald Angel's Sing, We Three King's of Orient Are, Jingle Bells, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Night Before Christmas (A Family Poem), Tractin' In A Winter Storm, The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't be Late)

VoicePlay : Peppermint Winter

Review: Pride of Orlando, FL since their beginnings there as a barbershop act, and close friends of Mickey "The Mouse," all-male quintet VoicePlay, formerly calling themselves 42Five, brings us "Peppermint Winter," their joyous new Christmas CD! There are 17 songs here, with a handful of standards such as "Deck The Halls," "I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas," "Santa Clause Is Coming To Town," a hip, swingin' "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Christmas Island," "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas," "The Christmas Song," "Silent Night" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." All these are made to sound new by innovative arrangements and "altered" lyrics, such as "Fat Man's Comin', Fat Man's Comin'...," and faux horns & whistles on "Christmas Island," for instance. Other songs are new to us, "Holiday Road," the bouncy "Season's Greetings," the manic, silly "Bollywood Jingle Bells," the title tune, "Somewhere In My Memory" "Santa and I Know It," "'Zat You, Santa Claus" and a Hanukkah tune, "Left to Right." VoicePlay knows all about thrilling audiences and bringing holiday cheer, so pick up "Peppermint Winter," a happy gift to yourself and your whole family!

Songlist: Deck The Halls, Holiday Road, I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming To Town, Christmas Island, Season's Greetings, Here Comes Santa Claus, Have a Holly Jolly Christmas, Left To Right, Bollywood Jingle Bells, Peppermint Winter, The Christmas Song, Silent Night, Somewhere in My Memory, Santa And I Know It, 'Zat You, Santa Claus, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
