Mixed Voice Barbershop Music

In a genre that has been split along gender lines for most of a century, who'd have expected mixed barbershop to be successful? Well, whoever didn't, should have. The great thing about mixed barbershop quartets is that they combine the best of the single-gender groups, and build on them. Mixed barbershop is on its way - you'll definitely want to get on the train now!

David Briner : If There's Anybody Here (from Out Of Town)

Review: "If There's Anybody Here (From Out of Town)" bounces across the USA, cataloging locales and scenes in toe-tapping fashion. Dave Briner's arrangement for men's quartet plus women's quartet was made famous in an excellent performance by Panache (1990 SAI International Champion Quartet) and Acoustix (1990 BHS International Champion Quartet,) and works well for choruses also.

Friends : Because

Review: These two CD's are the fruit of seven married couples, all of whom are members of SPEBSQSA and Sweet Adelines International. The ensemble includes Pat Rygg and Connie Miller of 4 Star Collection. However, though some vestiges of barbershop arrangement remain, most of the selections are show, Broadway or inspirational songs. Not exclusively a cappella, three of the tracks on "Ladies and Gentlemen," and four on "Because We're Friends," are accompanied in the easy listening style. Backing tracks notwithstanding, these fourteen voices have many years of part-singing experience between them, and their tuning, blend and expression are manifestly eloquent. Mixed groups have no officially sanctioned competitions at International as of yet, but can be seen competing at other barbershop events, such as Buckeye. Could be the start of something big!

Songlist: Set the Night to Music, Blue Skies, Yesterday, I'm Beginning to See the Light, Lida Rose, One Voice, The Birth of the Blues, No Not Much, Java Jive, Rodgers and Hammerstein Medley, Because We're Friends

Jubilation Singers : Red, White and Blue Christmas

Review: Formed in 1995 in the Fresno/Clovis, CA area, mixed a cappella ensemble The Jubilation Singers got together with the purpose of singing Christmas music in Victorian costume. There are currently 18 performers, including 3 husband and wife duos. They have since expanded their repertoire to include patriotic, jazz, spiritual and other popular selections. Impressively costumed and smiling broadly in the full color liner notes, they look like they're having a great time, and we can dig it! 26 songs, standard carols like "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow," "Silver Bells," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Deck The Halls" and "Coventry Carol" and pop/romantic songs like "Holiday Romance," "All Alone Beneath the Mistletoe" and "Merry Christmas Darling" intersperse with patriotic tunes like "America," "America the Beautiful" and "The Star Spangled Banner." "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Auld Lang Syne" are appropriately the last two cuts on this spirited, feel-good CD.

Kindred Spirits : Swing & Pray

Review: When two couples have gotten to know each other through church, barbershop singing, parenting children of similar ages, and being partners in business it is not a huge stretch of the imagination to find them creating a group which uses those musical elements of their common lives. These 'Kindred Spirits' share their life long love of singing with both religious and secular offerings. The arrangements take elements from hymns, a lot of swing and jazz standards and embellish them with the tight harmonies and chording learned with much barbershop experience to craft a joyous recording. Part of the delight of this original mix strikes one when you realize that, for just one example, "My Blue Heaven" isn't a religious tune and yet, well... it could be! You'll become a small 'k' kindred spirit too!

Songlist: This Is the Day, My Blue Heaven, Glorify Thy Name, It's A Pity To Say Goodnight, Chances Are, Have You Got Any Castles, Baby?, Where Is Love?, No More Sorrow, The Glory of Love, As We Sail to Heaven's Shore, I Don't Know Why (I Just Do), Nobody Knows What A Redhead Mama Can Do, Love Letters Straight From Your Heart, Send Your Love, Amazing Grace, Goodbye World

My Better Half : Oh Yeah! onsale

Review: Collectively, the two married couples, Gail and Bob Kriebel and Sue and Lou Nicharot, who form My Better Half have more than 100 years of singing experience. The two happy Pennsylvania couples share a love of a cappella Barbershop harmonies, which shows on these 13 covers. "My Better Half," "Good Luck Charm," "Witchcraft," "Fats Waller Medley," an appropriately revolting cover of Weird Al Yankovic's "One More Minute," the big band Swing tune "(I've Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo," the lovely "Loch Lomond," "Save the Last Dance for Me/Sway," "I Got Rhythm/Crazy Rhythm," the Appalachian Gospel tune "Down to the River to Pray," Frankie Lyman's Doo-Wop classic "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," "It's Impossible" and "Goodbye, World, Goodbye." "Oh Yeah!" has wonderful material and the quartet obviously loves its work-so enjoy!

Songlist: My Better Half, Good Luck Charm, Witchcraft, Fats Waller Melody, One More Minute, Kalamazoo (I've Got A Gal In), Loch Lomond, Save The Last Dance For Me/ Sway Melody, I Got Rhythm/ Crazy Rhythm, Down To The River To Pray, Why Do Fools Fall In Love?, It's Impossible, Goodbye, World, Goodbye

Rendezvoux : Rendezvoux

Review: It was a fortuitous meeting that brought these two men and two women singers together, who have very diverse interests and careers, but share a common joy in singing a cappella music. All four are accomplished barbershop singers, and as Rendezvous they have developed a style that is truly their own--a fresh, vibrant, energetic sound. This is their first CD, 16 songs ranging from jazz, pop, swing, and folk to gospel: "I'm Beginning to See the Light," "Two Sleepy People," Simon & Garfunkle's "59th Street Bridge Song," "So Wrong," "Somebody Loves Me," "A World of Our Own," the very funny "The Red Corvette" and finishing with the beautiful "Gospel Medley." There's a particularly fun "Silly Songs Medley" from the Swing era, and "Somebody Loves Me" is done as the original Gershwin song from 1924, then as the Four Freshmen's jazz version. Beautiful harmonies, good humor, strong arrangements-it adds up to an excellent first CD for Rendezvous!

Songlist: I'm Beginning to See the Light, Two Sleepy People, Dream A Little Dream Of Me, I'll Never Find Another You, So Wrong, Feelin' Groovy (The 59th Street Bridge Song), Here's That Rainy Day, Silly Songs Medley, I Fall In Love With You Every Day, Somebody Loves Me, More Than You Know, A World Of Our Own, If I knew Then (What I Know Now), The Red Corvette, Looking Through Your Eyes, Gospel Medley

Sound Celebration : Sound Celebration

Review: The two men and two women of Binghamton, NY-based Sound Celebration are members of the Mixed Harmony Barbershop Quartet Association and have been ringing chords for three and a half years. Besides barbershop, their repertoire includes country, blues, folk, spiritual, modern harmonies and doo-wop. A highlight of 2002 was a second-place finish in the Buckeye Invitational Mixed Quartet Contest in Columbus, Ohio, and in 2003 they won it all! In this, SC's first CD we hear 13 great barbershop tunes: the title tune, "Basin Street Blues, "Home on the Range," "Anytime," "I Can Dream, Can't I?," "Lullabye in Ragtime," "You Needed Me," "The Glory of Love," "I Wish You Love," "In The Still of the Night," the Gershwins' classic "Summertime," "What A Wonderful World" and "Gospel Medley." We like the whole idea of mixed barbershop groups and competitions, and SC is one of the great ones, singing with spirit and joy in the music; bending and ringing a barbershop chord with the best of them!

Songlist: Sound Celebration, Basin Street Blues , Home on the Range, Anytime, I Can Dream, Can't I, Lullabye in Ragtime, You Needed Me, The Glory of Love, I Wish You Love, In the Still of the Night, Summertime, What a Wonderful World, Gospel Medley

Voices of Liberty : A Cappella Americana onsale

Review: Derric Johnson is the director of the 'Voices Of Liberty,' the ten-voice ensemble that performs at Walt Disney World. This collection, featuring the Voices themselves, is as unabashedly and straightforwardly patriotic as it is possible to be, with songs such as 'This Land Is Your Land,' 'America, The Beautiful' and 'Battle Hymn Of The Republic' on the set list. The CD's opener, 'Golden Dream,' is the musical equivalent of a twelve-gun salute, if for nothing other than its finale, which climbs up the scale chromatically to dizzying heights. The challenging arrangements and the virtuosity of the performances - excellent across the board - are a complement to the sometimes grave lyrical content, which emphasizes all-American values with unmitigated confidence. Whatever one's opinions on that score, musically 'A Cappella Americana' is great.

Songlist: Golden Dream, Shenandoah, Railroad Medley, We, The People / America The Beautiful, The Star Spangled Banner, Songs Of The South (medley), This Land Is Your Land, Battle Hymn Of The Republic, Oh Susanna!, Black Is The Color of my True Love's Hair, The Penny / My Country 'tis of Thee
