Songbooks for Mezzo-Soprano Voices

A mezzo-soprano (meaning "medium" or "middle" "soprano" in Italian) is a type of classical female singing voice whose range lies between the soprano and the contralto singing voices, usually extending from the A below middle C to the A two octaves above (i.e. A3-A5 in scientific pitch notation, where middle C = C4). In the lower and upper extremes, some mezzo-sopranos may extend down to the G below middle C (G3) and as high as "high C" (C6).[1] While mezzo-sopranos generally have a heavier, darker tone than sopranos, the mezzo-soprano voice resonates in a higher range than that of a contralto. The terms Dugazon and Galli-Marie are sometimes used to refer to light mezzo-sopranos, after the names of famous singers. A castrato with a vocal range equivalent to a mezzo-soprano's range is referred to as a mezzo-soprano castrato or mezzista. Today, however, only women should be referred to as mezzo-sopranos; men singing within the female range are called countertenors. In current operatic practice, female singers with very low tessituras are often included among mezzo-sopranos, because singers in both ranges are able to cover the other, and true operatic contraltos are very rare.

Joan Frey Boytim : The Second Book of Mezzo-Soprano Solos Part II

Review: More great classical material for progressing vocal students, from the leading American expert in teaching the young voice. The series started with The First Book of Solos, and then, at the same difficulty level, came The First Book of Solos - Part II. The Second Book of Solos, originally released in 1993, is for singers who have taken voice a little longer and are capable of more challenges, but is still decidedly student-level material, and music that can be sung by good high school students. The new The Second Book of Solos - Part II set is at exactly the same level as The Second Book of Solos. It shares the same features: a deliberate variety of music in different styles and languages, including a few sacred selections, with over 30 songs per book. Available as books only, or in packs with two CDs of piano accompaniments recorded by Laura Ward.

Marilyn Horne : Voices of the Opera Series

Review: Marilyn Horne (b. January 16, 1934, Bradford, Pennsylvania) is an American mezzo-soprano opera singer who is particularly associated with the music of Rossini and Handel. She began her career as a light lyric soprano; however, as the years progressed, the voice settled and matured into a mezzo-soprano instrument with a full and rich timbre equipped with extreme flexibility and great size. She specialized in roles requiring a large sound, beauty of tone, excellent breath support, and the ability to execute difficult coloratura passages. This collection features celebrated arias as interpreted by the great Marilyn Horne. In addition to a brief biography, each selection, in standard voice and piano format, is followed by notes which indicate the variants, breaths, fermatas, and all of the nuances that Horne employed to turn these arias into masterpieces of interpretation. A wonderful reference tool for vocal coaches, professional singers and voice students.

Songlist: Belt? crudele (Rossini), Cruda sorte! Amor tirrano! from L'ITALIANA IN ALGERI (Rossini), Oh Patria! - Di tanti palpiti from TANCREDI (Rossini), Il risentimento (Rossini), Il trovatore (Rossini), L'invito (Rossini), Mura felici from LA DONNA DEL LAGO (Rossini), Una voce poco fa from IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA (Rossini)

Michael Dansicker : 16-Bar Theatre Audition Belter (Mezzo-Soprano)

Review: Most large audition calls for musical theatre, both professionally and in larger school situations, specify that those auditioning bring in a "16 bar" excerpt. The professionals in musical theatre often complain that singers don't know how to construct an appropriate 16 bar audition, either in choosing a song or in editing an excerpt. With this new series, that problem is solved forever! Editor Michael Dansicker, a composer/producer/music director, is a seasoned musical theatre veteran, with 100 Broadway credits. Richard Walters (editor) : The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology - Volume 5

Review: Since the launch of the first volumes in 1987, The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology has been an astounding success, with over 700,000 copies sold to date. For more than 20 years it has been considered the most reliable source for theatre music among singers and singing actors of all ages, from high school students to top working professionals. Many of these songs are not found in these versions in any other publication; some songs are not published anywhere else. Using Hal Leonard's vast access to songs through its print rights, Volume 5 continues the values of the series, presenting songs from recent musicals, as well as a deeper look into our contemporary and classic musical theatre heritage. A substantial section of information about the shows and the songs is included. The series is known for: editorial credibility - insightful selection of a huge variety of songs - songs in original keys - being based on authentic sources, drawn from vocal scores and piano/conductor rehearsal scores.

Various : The Oratorio Anthology

Review: This is the most serious and useful collection yet published of solo arias from oratorios, masses and cantatas. The literature was confined to work by major composers, and by-passes the dated oratorio literature found in previous collections. The most famous music is here, and so is interesting and less famous music by masters. There are new music engravings for each aria, and extensive historical notes and translations. Solo instrumental obbligato parts, which can be cut from the book, are included on appropriate selections.

Songlist: Qui sedes ad dextram Patris from Mass in B minor (Bach), Agnus Dei from Mass in B minor (Bach), Von den Stricken meiner Sünden from St. John Passion (Bach), Es ist vollbracht from St. John Passion (Bach), Buss und Reu from St. Matthew Passion (Bach), Erbarme dich, mein Gott from St. Matthew Passion (Bach), Können Tränen meiner Wangen from St. Matthew Passion (Bach), Bereite dich, Zion from Christmas Oratorio (Bach), Schlafe, mein Liebster from Christmas Oratorio (Bach), Schliesse, mein Herze from Christmas Oratorio (Bach), Inflammatus et accensus from Stabat Mater (Dvorák), Virgam virtutis tuae rom Dixit Dominus (Handel), Father of Heav'n! from Judas Maccabæus (Handel), O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion from Messiah (Handel), He was despised from Messiah (Handel), But who may abide from Messiah (Handel), Thou art gone up on high from Messiah (Handel), Fac me vere tecum flere from Stabat Mater (Haydn), Woe unto them who forsake Him from Elijah (Mendelssohn), O rest in the Lord from Elijah (Mendelssohn), Laudamus te from Mass in C minor (Mozart), Quæe moerebat et dolebat from Stabat Mater (Pergolesi), Eija, mater, fons amoris from Stabat Mater (Pergolesi), Fac ut portem from Stabat Mater (Pergolesi), Vouchsafe, O Lord from Te Deum Laudamus (Handel), Agnus Dei from Messe Solennelle (Rossini), Fac ut portem from Stabat Mater (Rossini), Liber scriptus from Messa di Requiem (Verdi), Qui sedes ad dextram Patris from Gloria (Vivaldi), Esurientes implevit from Magnificat (Vivaldi)

G. Schirmer Opera Anthology : Diction Coach - Arias For Mezzo-Soprano

Review: Diction lessons on each aria in the series recorded by top language coaches from the Metropolitan Opera and the Juilliard School plus International Phonetic Alphabet and word for word translations. With these book/CD packages that match the standard aria collections edited by Robert L. Larsen, any singer anywhere has access to the best diction coaching available at a very affordable price. Each aria is recorded twice. In the first version the coach recites the text as an actor would speak it, showing flow of the language and the mood. The second version is a slow, deliberate lesson, allowing time for the student to repeat each line. These experienced language coaches adapt the "R" in German and French in the slow versions for singers. They also are very sensitive to liaisons between word sounds in the musical settings. The book includes International Phonetic Alphabet for each aria and word for word translations. The native speaking professional diction coaches from the Metropolitan Opera and the Juilliard School are: Corradina Caporello for Italian, Pierre Vallet for French, Irene Spiegelman for German, Kathryn LaBouff for English, Yveta Synek Graff for Czech, and Gina Levinson for Russian. Companion to 50481098 Arias for Mezzo-Soprano.

Joan Frey Boytim : The Second Book of Mezzo-Soprano / Alto Solos Part II

Songlist: Affanni del pensier, Ah, Love but a Day!, All mein Gedanken, Allerseelen, As thou wilt, Father, Au jardin de mon p?re, Avril , Before my window, Chanson triste, Cherry Valley, Die Mainacht, Du meines Herzens Kr?nelein, Du Ring an meinem Finger, Et exultavit spiritus meus from MAGNIFICAT, Immer leiser wird mein Schlummer, L'Heure exquise, La speranza ? giunta from OTHO, Lord to thee, each night and day from THEODORA, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness, Lungi da te, Mon jardin, Nebbie, Qui sedes from GLORIA, Se tu della mia morte, Serenity, Song of Devotion, Song of the Open, Tears, The Awakening, The Twenty-third Psalm, and more
