Groove Society is an award winning vocal ensemble with a growing reputation for their excellence in jazz and a cappella singing. Thoughtfully crafted arrangements, masterful use of extended harmonies, intricate rhythms and exhilarating improvisations characterize this ensemble’s unique sound. Although the group’s roots are firmly planted in the jazz genre, they are not afraid to demonstrate their versatility by performing in a variety of styles. Whether singing Latin, blues, bebop, rock, pop, funk or R&B, a common thread of exuberant passion and soul runs throughout each performance.

Former members of the University of Northern Colorado's Grammy nominated ensemble, Vocal Jazz 1, formed the group in 2002. With degrees ranging from vocal performance to music education to theory and composition, they have combined their talents to create a dynamic group that captivates audiences and finds itself in demand. In their short history Groove Society has already performed throughout Colorado and the Western United States and has shared the stage with influential jazz artists including Paul Taylor, Nelson Rangell and Peter Eldridge.In addition to their busy performing schedule, Groove Society also works in education, giving workshops and clinics to high school and college students. Individually, members are involved in a variety of projects including solo performances and recordings, teaching, adjudicating, writing and arranging. The group hopes to continue to explore all styles of music and expand their audiences for years to come.

Formed in 2002 by four men and two women, former members of the Univ. of Northern Colorado's Grammy-nominated ensemble, Vocal Jazz 1, Groove Society has a growing reputation for thoughtfully crafted arrangements, intricate rhythms and exhilarating improvisations. Although their roots are firmly planted in the Jazz genre, they perform in a variety of styles, Latin, blues, bebop, rock, pop funk and R&B with their trademark exuberant passion and soul. "Groove Society," their impressive debut CD, features 11 tunes, and it's hard to pick favorites. That said, we really liked Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va," the Gershwins' classic "Summertime," and a "Tribute to Earth, Wind and Fire" medley that few groups would attempt, much less nail as Groove Society has here. Van Morrison's moody "Moondance," the Harry James/Duke Ellington hit "I'm Beginning to See the Light," Chicago's "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" the Doobie Bros.' "Listen to the Music" and the final cut, Barry Manilow's rainy-day "When October Goes" are particularly well done. For such a young group, GS has the poise, the bright, polished sound, the effortless vocal percussion and the cutting-edge arrangements of a veteran group with years of experience singing together. Groove Society is going places fast!
