Alexandria Harmonizers

Alexandria Harmonizers

There were four godfathers to the chartering of the Alexandria Harmonizers. Godfather-in-Chief was Dean Snyder, who had just been elected President of the DC Chapter and who, several years later, was to transfer his barbershop allegiance to Alexandria. Godfather Number Two was Eugene Barnwell, then Director of the City of Alexandria's Dept. of Recreation. His chance meeting with Dean on a cold and rainy November night in 1947 on the George Washington Parkway began a chain of barbershop events that has continued for over 59 years. Godfathers Number Three and Four were Jean Boardman and Louis E. Metcalf.

Dean had a long history with barbershopping that began well before there was a Society: he sang in his first quartet, The Troubadours, at the age of nineteen; he was the third person to to sign the charter for the DC Chapter in 1945; and was the force behind establishing a new barbershop chapter in Alexandria.

Alexandria Harmonizers : Comfort and Joy

Review: This is the 2005 version of the Alexandria (VA) Harmonizers, one of the great SPEBSQSA male choruses of all time, boasting 4 International Golds and more than a double handful of silvers and bronzes. "Comfort" of course is a Christmas album, and Musical Director Richard Lewellen leads his 200+ singers in 14 classic tunes. The pictures on the liner notes are of a concert performance with the Harmonizers dressed as carolers, and then as elves in Santa's workshop. All our favorites are here: "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "Do You Hear What I Hear," "Mr. Grinch" (featuring Four Aces), "Silent Night," "I Wonder What You're Doing for Christmas," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (featuring Four Aces), and "Auld Lang Syne." These songs are as filled with harmony and spirit as you can imagine, as if you've invited a couple hundred of the best carolers in the world to your house for the holidays, without having to feed them!

Songlist: Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, Coventry Carol, Angels We Have Heard On High, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Do You Hear What I Hear?, Silent Night, Mr. Grinch, Caroling, Caroling, The Secret of Christmas, I Wonder What You're Doing For Christmas, The Christmas Song, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Auld Lang Syne

Alexandria Harmonizers : Wee Small Hours

Review: Founded in Alexandria, VA in 1948, the 200+ male members of this great chorus have a proud tradition, having won the International Chorus Championship Gold four times, and have been finalists 13 times, including 11 silver and bronze medals. Musical Director Scott Werner spent 38 years as a chorus member and almost 30 as their Director. "Wee Small Hours" is a delightful, spirited 17-song collection of live performances, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and "If You Were the Only Girl in the World" were recorded at the SPEBSQSA International competition in Nashville. Favorites are a very funny rendition of "Kiss the Girl" from The Little Mermaid, Irving Berlin's "Puttin' on the Ritz/Slummin' on Park Ave" and "Steppin' Out Medley," "Old St. Louie," "Blue Velvet" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." The guys are having great fun performing their richly harmonied, perfectly arranged nostalgic hits for us, and we get to let this wall of exquisite sound wash over us, and applaud!

Songlist: Alexandria Harmonizers Welcome Song, Gospel Medley, Blue Velvet, Kiss the girl, I'll Walk With God, Putting on the Ritz / Slumming on Park Ave, If you Were the Only Girl in the World, Alexander's Rag Time Band, Moments to Remember Medley, Hooked on Classics Medley, When You Wish Upon a Star, Old st. Louie, Battle Hymn of the republic, In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning / Always, Stepping Out Medley
