Vocal Sampling
Vocal Sampling, nominated for 3 Grammy awards for their album "Cambio de Tiempo", is a band where the instruments are sung instead of played. Not only the lead vocal and the background choruses, but all the instruments of the Latin orchestra - percussion, homs, keyboards, bass, and all the other instruments are vocally reproduced. There is no technical trickery and no other instruments. Vocal Sampling is comprised of six young Cuban men in their twenties, all accomplished instrumentalists and arrangers, who met at music school. What began as an amusing after-school game has become their full-time career. For those new to Latin music, Vocal Sampling is a highly entertaining introduction to the rhythms and styles of Cuban music - guaracha, boleros, rumba, son and swinging saisa. For those familiar with this genre, the group always brings amazement and a smile of delight.
In the summer of 1996 they were invited to appear at the 30th Montreux Jazz Festival as the special guests of Quincy Jones for his 50th anniversary, where they shared the stage with Chaka Khan, Phil Collins, David Sandborn, Mick Hucknall and Toots Thielemans.

When Vocal Sampling first became members of the a cappella scene everyone, simply everyone was blown away. Never before had we heard such complex rhythms made by vocally recreating a traditional Cuban dance band. Fabulous! This is their first album and an absolute must for a capellan literacy. It is full of the best known Cuban songs. Good notes give us understanding of the context of these songs in Cuban life, but the music is so rich as to carry us away with the horn sections, seeming endless varieties of percussion, and guitars. Styles include the bolero, comparsa, palo monte, rumba, salsa, son and trova. Wow!
