Memphis Boychoir

The Memphis Boyschoir is a non-denominational, non-sectarian ensemble, whose mission is to provide to the city of Memphis and its environs a spiritual and musical experience featuring the unique aural qualities of unchanged treble boys voices, AND to provide our choristers with the opportunity to participate in a musical discipline that builds confidence, collegiality, and teamwork. The boys sing periodic concerts at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Memphis where the choir is in permanent residence by virtue of its charter. Many of these concerts are sung alongside their adult counterparts, the Memphis Chamber Choir.

Every year the City of Memphis anticipates the release of a CD by their own Memphis Boychoir and Memphis Chamber Choir, based at St. John's Episcopal Church. The groups' repertoire spans a broad range of sacred styles from the 16th century to the present. Included in "Our Golden Decade" are 23 sacred songs, all organ-accompanied, from Hoiby's "At the Round Earth's Imagined Corners" and David Hurd's "A Stable Lamp is Lighted" to Freund's "Jubilate Deo" and Charles Wood's "God Omnipotent Reigneth. Founded in 1988 and 89, Memphis' Boychoir and Chamber Choir have recorded a number of CDs that have earned them international acclaim. "Dancing Day" is a Christmas CD, about half accompanied by strings, drum, tambourine, flute and brass. Familiar tunes like John Rutter's "Shepherd's Pipe Carol," Britten's "A Shepherd's Carol," Praetorius' "Psallite Unigenito," "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night," and the traditional French carol "Ding Dong! Merrily On High!"; and lesser known ones like Mathias' "Sir Christemas," Belcher's "Lutebook Lullabye," and Waters' "I Sing of a Maiden" create an impressive mix.
