The Gothenburg Boys' Choir was founded 1962 in the Gothenburg Cathedral by Ms Birgitta Persson, who conducted the choir until 1993. The choir has since then toured many countries in Europe, overseas and also the Australia and the Pacific. Since 1997 the Gothenburg Boys' Choir is a choir society, no longer linked to the Cathedral, but works strongly in its former tradition. The choir consists of some 70 boys and young men, all 7-25 years of age. It is the second largest boys' choir in Sweden. The choir is divided into six groups, according to age, voice and routine. The best groups are the touring choir, also called "The Concert Choir", and "The Chamber Choir", with somewhat younger singers. The Gothenburg Boys' Choir is a well known music institution in the Western Region of Sweden. We collaborate with the Swedish National Symphony Orchestra and with the Gothenburg Opera House. Numerous national broadcasts and concerts in Sweden have been made the last few years. Boys from the entire region travel far every week to rehearse in our house in the historical centre of Gothenburg. Few choirs in Sweden have the privilege of having an entire building for their disposal.
The artistic director since 2001 is Ms Maria Forsström, born in Gothenburg. She has studied musicology at the Gothenburg University, has a MoFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Church Music and a Postgraduate Diploma of choir conducting from The Royal College of Music in Stockholm. One of her greatest interests is ensemble singing and renaissance music, which she has studied with The Hilliard Ensemble. She has also studied Baroque singing at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She has been assistant conductor for Morávska Filharmonie in Olomouc, Czech Republic, and is currently studying orchestra conducting with Mtro A. Polishchuk on a regular basis, at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg.

Since 1962 Birgitta Persson has been conducting the Gothenburg Cathedral Boys’ Choir. A mix of boys and men, this 200 member Swedish group has sung in Cathedrals all over the world. On this CD they sing sacred pieces from the Romantic period and later written mainly by Swedish composers. The choir says its most important feature when singing is to make people happy. Sweden has such an acclaimed choral tradition and this world-class choir is a wonderful example.
