A big seller at the recent ACDA Convention in New York City, "Eric Whitacre" is a stunning collection of songs composed in the classical style of Monteverdi, Debussy and Prokofiev, but with inspiration from such groups as the Beatles, Sting, Queen, Madonna and Peter Gabriel. His choice of texts also reflects a broad range of poets - Octavio Paz, Ogden Nash, James Joyce, e.e. cummings and Emily Dickenson, religious poets being conspicuous in their absence, although "three songs of faith" are included here. The mixed-voice Brigham Young U. Singers do justice to Whitacre's difficult, eclectic, wonderful, soaring compositions. 12 songs, "Water Night," the three songs of faith: "I Will Wade Out," "Hope, Faith, Life, Love," "I Thank You God for most this Amazing Day," "Cloudburst", "Sleep," "I Hide Myself," "With a Lily in Your Hand," "Go Lovely Rose," "When David Heard," "Lux aurumque" and "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine." "Beautiful" is an inadequate word to describe Whitacre's work and the BYU Singers' interpretation of it. "Amazing" works much better! Recommended.

Abide with Me; Tis Eventide (L. Hofford)

In 2003 the veteran, prolific BYU Singers were preparing for a concert tour of Ukraine when war in the Middle East caused its cancellation. They shifted their energies to this new recording, their 4th on the Tantara label, which includes two Ukrainian choral treasures, Dimitri Bortnyansky's "Cherubic Hymn" and Konstantin Shvedov's "To Thee We Sing (Tebe Poyem)." Some other favorites are the title tune, "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," Robert Starer's soaring "Give Thanks unto the Lord," the energetic "Praise the Name of the Lord (Laudate Nomen)," the hymn "Nearer My God to Thee," and Hofford/Millard's sweet "Abide with Me; 'Tis Eventide." Some light piano accompaniment. A beautiful, deeply-felt collection!

This recording continues the intent of the Singers' two earlier CDs, "We Sing of Christ" and "Songs of the Soul," adding another dimension in expressions of love and faith for Jesus Christ in their interpretations of African-American spirituals. There are 21 classic Spirituals here, the title tune, "Were You There" (sung in concert with the BYU Concert Choir and Men's Chorus), Adolphus Hailstork's "Crucifixion," "By and By," "Ain't Got Time to Die," "See What the End Is Gonna Be" (an original by founder/conductor/arranger Ronald Staheli), Moses Hogan's "I Got a Home in-a dat Rock" "Elijah Rock," Didn't My Lord Daniel Deliver" and "The Battle of Jericho," "Shut de Do'," "Let Me Fly" and "Ain't that News." But there's not a weak cut on this recording- "I Believe" is upbeat, joyous stuff, one of our favorite recordings by a great chorus!

BYU Singers / University of Miami Chorale - Music of Eric Whitacre

Ghost Train Trilogy - Rutgers Wind Ensemble
GawdSilla Eats Las Vegas!
Rak HaHatchala
Little Tree - University of Miami Chorale
Water Night - BYU Singers
Cloudburst - BYU Singers

This CD begins with a 3-part, eclectic, dramatic, rich-in-special-effects all-instrumental piece by Eric Whitacre, the "Ghost Train Trilogy," about a supernatural machine that roars through the western US, played by the Rutgers Wind Ensemble. Following that is "GAWD$ILLA EATS LAS VEGAS," a piece Whitacre wanted to write that was "really out there," that includes amazing, all-instrumental dramatic West Side Story and Gershwin samples. A sweet piece by the Rutgers Wind Ensemble follows, "Rak Hahatchala," featuring soprano Hila Plitmann. Then we have the University of Miami Chorale perform Whitacre's beautiful "little tree," (accompanied) with text by e.e. cummings, and two lovely Whitacre pieces by the BYU Singers, "Water Night" and "Cloudburst," both with text by Octavio Paz. These last two a cappella pieces are difficult, eclectic, soaring and lovely. Eric Whitacre is a surprising composer who takes many chances in his work, which is why listening to "The Music of Eric Whitacre" never fails to delight and challenge us.

Organized in 1984 under the direction of Mack Wilberg, the 90-voice BYUCC is one of two highly select mixed choral ensembles that continue a long choral singing tradition at the University. The group has appeared in concert at national ACDA and MTNA conventions and with the Utah Symphony. On "All Creatures" the group's full, rich, flawless sound is featured on a collection of 12 symphonically accompanied, mostly traditional Christian hymns and songs of praise. The title tune, "The Lord Is My Shepherd," John Gardner's "Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning," "Be Still My Soul" and "Jesus, Once of Humble Birth" are particularly fine. Mack Wilberg's skills as an arranger are evident on four songs, and his own compositions, "Jesu, the Very Thought Is Sweet," and "Fantasia on Early Latter-day Saint Hymns," are wonderful. Extensive liner notes with all lyrics. An impressive, inspirational CD!

A Thanksgiving Of American Folk Hymns is a visual feast from the rich tradition of music at Brigham Young University. As the hour long program begins, an early American landscape of colorful leaves and delicate autumn branches gives way to 400 singers and over a hundred instrumentalists joined in song. To see them, through windows of faith, is to hear beloved favorites anew-Shaker hymns, American folk songs, an African-American spiritual, Southern folk hymns and such classics as Abide With me; 'Tis Eventide and The Battle hymn of the Republic. Voices soar, and we see in the faces of fervent young performers a celebration of the gladness and sorrow that has shaped America-an America we have been and hope to be.
