A Cappella Singers : Deck The Halls

Review: Conductor and founder of The Acappella Singers Ronald Boender's love of pure acappella singing is but one of his many interests. His interest in Tropical Biology led him to found Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, FL, where the Singers regularly perform. The 32-strong, semi-professional Singers, who are celebrating their 10th year together and their 8th excellent recording, bring us 9 traditional Christmas tunes, 7 of them arranged by Derric Johnson: "Wassail Song," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "Rejoice with Exceeding Great Joy" which segues into "We Three Kings" and "Noel, Noel;" "Infant Holy" (arranged by Paul Christiansen), "Deck The Halls," "White Christmas," "Winter Wonderland," "Away In The Manger," and "Jingle Bells." Nice solos by John Cotter on "Winter Wonderland" and "Rejoice with Exceeding Great Joy," and Beverly Atkinson on "Away In The Manger." A bright, joyous collection to brighten your holidays!

Songlist: Wassail Song, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, Rejoice With Exceeding Great Joy, Infant Holy, Deck The Halls, White Christmas, Winter Wonderland, Away In A Manger, Jingle Bells

A Cappella Singers : The Star Spangled Banner

Review: A collection of songs reflecting tradition and history that proves to be timeless. Derric Johnson is a well known arranger of Americana and his genius is spotlighted 6 times on this collection including 'America the Beautiful', 'Shenandoah', 'The Star Spangled Banner', and 'Oh, Suzanna'. Giving a little room for others arrangers such as Robert Shaw's 'Set Down Servant' and Pat Ballard's 'Mr. Sandman' is necessary, as they are also quite enjoyable. Impressions are made with the simplicity of these recordings, yet coupled with the echoing sound of a Cathedral gives the feeling of wholeness and serenity. The voices of the Acappella Singers are smooth, crisp and clear with the talented direction of Ronald Boender.

Songlist: America The Beautiful, Shenandoah, Set Down Servant, Danny Boy, The Star Spangled Banner, My Song in the Night, Oh Suzanna, Mr. Sandman, Lord of The Dance, He Never Sleeps, Skip to My Lou, Soldier, Soldier Won't You Marry Me?, Joshua, God Be With You

Since 1994, the Acappella Singers have built a solid repertoire of the finest acappella choral literature (in 8 parts) remaining steadfast to the foundation of the purest form of singing. Choosing Christmas songs arranged by aforementioned Derric Johnson, as well as Alfred Burt and Jay Rouse to name a few. Accentuated with sounds of a cathedral echo you can only love 'Carol Of The Bells', 'Joy To The World', 'Caroling, Caroling', 'Rejoice and Sing', and 'Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence'.

A Cappella Singers : This Is My Father's World

Review: Performing at various venues all over South Florida, the non-denominational Acappella Singers was founded by Ronald Boender in 1994, as a group of semi-professional singers under his direction. The goal of this unique 32 voice ensemble is to perform only the finest a cappella choral literature in all formats including sacred, folk, classical, patriotic, and Christmas favorites. Because the repertoire of the Singers is almost entirely written in 8 parts, and could be considered pop vocal or vocal jazz, the ensemble produces a distinctive sound that is exciting to hear, and rare in the choral field. "My Father's World" features 10 beautifully arranged Christian spiritual sounds: "We Will Glorify," "Have Thine Own Way," "He Never Sleeps," "Beautiful Savior," "Children of the Heavenly Father," John Rutter's "God Be In My Head," the title tune (arranged by Paul Christiansen), "I Love You Lord," and Joyce Eilers' "Go Ye Now In Peace." Soaring harmonies, a couple of lovely solos by Elisa McCord on "He Never Sleeps" and Maryanne Webel on "Beautiful Savior," a bright, clean sound and deeply-felt lyrics are features of this very special CD.

Songlist: We Will Glorify, Have Thine own Way, Adoration, He Never Sleeps, Beautiful Savior, Children of the Heavenly Father, God Be In My Head, This Is My Father's World, I Love You Lord, Go Ye Now In Peace

Academy of Choral Art : Pearls of Traditional Music

Review: This superb chorus sings a multiplicity of folk masterpieces: Russian, Gregorian, and Ukrainian. The authentic Russian songs offered generously on this program cover a wide range of genre and character, from love songs and coach tunes to peasant dances. The emotional range is broad as well, from subtle lyrics to boisterous joy. Each region represented reveals in its music an enriched experience of the uniqueness of its own culture. Sumptuous sound from top to bottom, pinpoint accuracy, electrifying virtuosity and great expressiveness. Selections range from old favourites like "Dark Eyes," the "Volga Boatman's Song," and "Kalinka," to much less familiar gems like "There is Birch in the Field" (Tchaikovsky Uses this theme in his Fourth Symphony.) The true joy in singing is everywhere evident.

Songlist: The Ural Rowan, Red Sarafan, Nightingale, Amur Waves, Dark Eyes, Down the Volga River, Dubinushka, the Volga, Boatman's Song, There was a Birch in a Field, On a Hill, Suliko (Georgian), Oh Oak, My Oak (Ukranian), Sing Martlet, Sing, One Hears the Sound of a Distant Lone Bell, Twelve Robbers, Brooms, Peddlers, The Evening Chime, Kalinka

Academy of St Martins In The Field Chorus : Grainger: A Cappella Choral Works

Review: When Laszlo Heltay founded the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chorus in 1975, he set the standards for the fresh, clear tone now admired throughout the choral world. Grammy-winning conductor Richard Hickox leads the Chorus in a selection of 12 "Works for Unaccompanied Chorus" by the beloved Australian composer/arranger Percy Grainger. Grainger wrote original pieces, and arranged folk songs that he sought out in the English and Scottish countryside and around the world. Included are "My Love's in Germanie," "Six Dukes Went A-fishin'," "O Mistress Mine," "Mary Thomson," "Early One Morning," "Irish Tune from County Derry," "Agincourt Song," "Australian Up-Country Song, "Recessional," "At Twilight," "The Gypsy's Wedding Day" and "Mo Nighean Dubh." Wonderful, authentic folk songs, beautifully sung by a top-drawer chorus!

African Methodist Choir with Mara Louw : African Hymns

Review: Handpick singers from a number of South African choirs, put the excellent Mara Louw out in front as the lead, take a number of hymns they all know from church, as well as the South African national anthem, and you have the ingredients for this excellent disc. Unlike so many hymns, these are performed with great, roaring joy (arranged for the most part by Louw) and recorded--as it should be--in a church. But unlike, say, American or Jamaican gospel, there`s a sense of unity, rather than testifying; the voices embrace this music, but they sing it as it is, rather than using it as a lift-off point to testify. The harmonies might have their written roots in Europe, but the voices singing them are ineffably African, bringing something different to the sound. There`s a sense of control about it all, even when a speaking voice breaks in on `Jerusalem Ikhaya Lam,` for instance, or on the rare occasions when some very spare percussion accompanies the a cappella voices. It`s majestic, but that`s the intent, a nexus between Europe and Africa, meeting in Christianity. That`s even there on the by-now famous `Nkosi Sikelel`i Afrika,` the country`s very hymn-like national anthem, performed here as the closer, full-voiced and glorious, sung with unconcealed pride and joy.

Songlist: Hee! Ba Nyoriloeng, Siya Kudumisa Thixo, Ha Kelestshe - Kele Mobe, Kenang Bohle, Kese Ke Utloile, Imfazwe Imfazwe, Amahlathi Aphelile, Mphe Maleme Ase Kete / Vuthelani Ixilongo, Jerusalem Ikhaya Lam, Masibulele Ku Jesu, Bawo Ndingu Mntwana Wakho, Seteng Sediba Samadi, Rea Oboka Morena, Wakrazulwa Ngenxa Yami, Noyana, Ingoma Ka Ntsikana, Nkosi Sikelel'i Afrika

Alamire : Josquin Desprez

Review: Josquin Desprez is widely recognized as the greatest of the Renaissance master musicians. He set the standard for the various compositional techniques borrowed and utilized by most composers of his generation and beyond, and became an iconic figure whose art captivated musicians and scholars for centuries. This recording centres around some of Josquin's earliest works, and, in particular, his fascination with the D'ung aultre amer rondeau composed by his teacher Johannes Ockeghem. Also included are some of his most popular motets and chansons performed here by a solo voice (Clare Wilkinson) with renaissance harp (Andrew Lawrence-King).

Songlist: Missa D'ung aultre amer, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus / Tu solus qui facis mirabilia , Agnus dei, De tous beins plaine, Mille regretz, Ave Maria, Qui belles amours, Fortuna d'un gran tempo, Planxit autem David, Cela sans plus, Sanctus 'D'ung aultre amer', Tu lumen, tu splendor patris, La Bernardina, Victimae paschali laudes / D'ung aultre amer , Adieu mes amours , Ile fantazies de Joskin , Tu solus qui facis mirabilia / D'ung aultre amer,

Alamire : Madrigals For A Tudor King - Verdelot

Review: Philippe Verdelot was the most important composer of Italian madrigals in the early 16th century and recognized as the greatest innovator of the genre. A Frenchman, he occupied several important musical posts in Italy, including the Florentine posts of maestro di cappella at the Baptistry of S. Maria del Fiore and the great Duomo itself. In the mid 1520s, during his time in Florence, a set of part-books were assembled, probably under Verdelot's supervision, for the court of Henry VIII. Most, if not all, of the works were composed by Verdelot. This is the first recording of the complete madrigals in the collection, which stands not only as the most exceptional of diplomatic musical gifts but is also an important source for the history of the early madrigal.

Songlist: Italia mia bench' el parlar', Con l'angelico riso, Quanto sia lieto il girono, Lasso, che se creduto, O dolce nocte, Madonna qual certeca, Afflicti spirti mei, Dentr' al mio cor', Quando nascesti, Amore?, Piove da li occhi, Pur troppo, donna, I vostri acuti dardi, Chi non fa prove, amore, Leit' e madonna et io pur, Con lacrim' et sospir' negando porge, Donna, se fera stella, Ognun si duol' d'amore, Altro non e el mio amor', Madonna io v'amo e taccio, Si suave e l'inghanno, Se ben' li occhi, Cortese alma gentile, Quanta doleca amore, Donna che sete fra le donne belle, La bella donna, Deh, quant' e dolc' amor, Donna leggiadr' et bella, Madonna, per voi ardo, Amor, io sento l'alma, Ultimi mei sospiri

Alamire : These Distracted Times - Thomas Tompkins

Review: The political intrigue of the early 17th century culminated with the execution of Charles I in 1649 and the beginning of the Commonwealth led by the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. Thomas Tomkins, the greatest composer of that age, wrote a pavan for 'these distracted times' shortly after the King's execution. This CD provides a mixture of Tomkin's church and chamber music that soothed troubled souls during these turbulent years. The recording was made in the chapel of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where Cromwell was a student and where his severed head remains.

Songlist: Pavan I, Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, Hear my prayer, O Lord, The heavens declare, Te Deum, A Fancy, Jubilate, O Lord, how manifold, Pavan VII, I heard a voice from heaven, Magnificat, Pavan 'for these distracted times', Nunc dimittis, Pavan VIII, Remember me, O Lord, When David heard, My help cometh from the Lord,

Alfred Burt / Columbia Choir : The Christmas Mood

Review: Alfred S. Burt died in February of 1954 at the age of 33, already a legend. The slender minister's son, the young jazz trumpeter who composed Christmas carols, was carrying on a tradition started in 1922 by his father, the Reverend Bates G. Burt, who began sending his own composed carols as Christmas messages to friends and family. Rev. Bates proudly saw his son take over music in 1941, while he supplied the lyrics. These are the only carols created in modern times that have obtained international acceptance in the music community, from local choirs to stars like Andy Williams, Peggy Lee, Nat "King" Cole, Frank Sinatra, The Lennon Sisters and many others have recorded Burt carols. So listen to these "mini-masterpieces," beautifully performed by the Columbia Choir with occasional light accompaniment by the Ralph Carmichael Brass Ensemble and organ. "Caroling, Caroling," "The Star Carol," "Christ in the Stranger's Guise," "Come Dear Children," "Some Children See Him," "All on a Christmas Morning," "O Hearken Ye." "Jesu Parvule," "Nigh Bethlehem," "This is Christmas," "Ah, Bleak and Chill" and "We'll Dress the House." At the end of the CD is a very nice instrumental medley of the carols. We have enjoyed these carols as particularly wonderful ones for years, never knowing the story of their gifted composer, now we see them with a new appreciation. Recommended!

Songlist: Caroling, Caroling, The Star Carol, Christ in the Stranger's Guise, Come, Dear Children, Some Children See Him, All on a Christmas Morning, O, Hearken Ye, Jesu Parvule, Nigh Bethlehem, This is Christmas, Ah, Bleak and Chill, We'll Dress the House, Instrumental medlies:, Caroling, Caroling, All on a Christmas Morning, We'll Dress the House, The Star Carol, Some Children See Him, Come, Dear Children, Ah, Bleak and Chill, Jesu Parvule, O, Hearken Ye

Alfred Burt / Jimmy Joyce Singers : This Is Christmas

Review: Considered by some to be the finest recording of Christmas carols ever, these original compositions were written by Alfred and primary lyricists Wihla Hutson and Bates G. Burt (Alfred's father). In fact, the carols were initially sent as Christmas messages to Burt family members and friends! Alfred died in 1954 at the age of thirty three, but his legacy has brought joy to untold myriads of listeners ever since. Artists from Nat "King" Cole to the Boston Pops Orchestra and Chorus have popularized what conductor John Williams described as "mini-masterpieces." The sixteen voice a cappella choir directed by arranger Jimmy Joyce (who had worked with Alfred in the Alvino Rey Orchestra) is sprightly and surefooted in their performance, which was recorded in 1963. A sentimental and popular favorite.

Songlist: This Is Christmas, Christmas Cometh Caroling, Ah, Bleak And Chill The Wintry Wind, Come, Dear Children, Some Children See Him, Sleep, Baby Mine, All On A Christmas Morning, Caroling, Caroling, The Star Carol, We'll Dress The House, Christ In The Stranger's Guise, Nigh Bethlehem, What Are The Signs, Jesu Parvule, O Hearken Ye

Allmanna Sangen : Resonanser

Review: The Swedish choral tradition enjoys a very high reputation, with music lovers often claiming to be able to recognize a uniquely Swedish choral sound. Exactly what this sound consists of is difficult to pinpoint, but often mentioned are keywords such as melancholy, the Scandinavian countryside, folk music and traditional ballads. The selection of works on this disc exemplifies all of these, and the performance of them has been entrusted to one of the choirs that have shaped Swedish choral music: Allmaanna Sangen, an Uppsala student choir with a history going back for more than 175 years. The choir's position in Swedish cultural life was demonstrated in 2005 by an invitation to sing at the Nobel Banquet. That performance was televised throughout the world, and in fact included three of the works on this disc - Biegga Luothe, Glaspolskan and Byss-Kalles slangpolska. Great traditions notwithstanding, this disc offers a new perspective on its subject, as the choir brings out new resonances in the often well-known music. A collaboration with Swedish jazz pianist Anders Widmark lends unusual colours to settings of ancient folk chorales (I Himmelen) and traditional harvest songs (Slattervisa), as well as to classics from the treasure of Swedish choral music such as Stenhammar's Three Choral Songs and Alfven's Evening. Both Allmanna Sangen and Anders Widmark have made a number of successful recordings, and now that they join forces for the first time, it is an occasion not to be missed.

Songlist: Biegga Luothe, Ljusfalten, I Himmelen, Glaspolskan, Slangpolska Efter Byss-Kalle, September, I Seraillets Have, Havde Jeg, O Havde Jeg en Datterson, o Ja!, Kung Liljekonvalje, Slattervisa Efter Knis Karl, En Midsommarnattsdrom, Under Ronn Och Syren, Aftonen, Med En Barnbon Pa Sin Mun, Brollopsvisa Efter Kirsten Braten Berg

Amabile Boys and Mens Choirs : Soldier's Cry

Review: Songs and stories of war and peace are probably second in quantity only to songs of love. In planning this recording we have tried to find stories of war and peace that resonate profoundly with listeners and that might help us understand the countless loss of innocent soldiers' and civilians' lives throughout history. We offer this recording in honour of the soldiers by telling their stories and acknowledging their sacrifice for the rest of us. All of the Amabile Boys and Men's Choirs are represented on this recording from our youngest Treble Training Choir who combine with our Treble Concert Choir, to our Young Men and our senior choir, Primus, who sing together as the Amabile Young Men's Ensemble.

Songlist: Soldier's Cry, Waitin for the Dawn Of Peace, The Morning Trumpet, The Lord's My Shepherd, Even When God Is Silent, Amazing Grace, Oseh Shalom, Peace Drum Song, Prayer of the Children, When A Child Lights A Candle, I Am But A Small Voice, Varjele Jumala Soasta, In Flanders Fields, For The Fallen, Reconciliation, In Remembrance, Ave Maris Stella, Libertatum, The Last Post

Amabile Youth Singers : Early Classics & Late Greats

Review: Composer's Notes: The first pieces I wrote for the Amabile Youth Singers, beautifully conducted by John Barron, were the cornerstone of my career. People often ask why they can't get those early classics on one CD. Now you can. Here in one collection are the legendary performances of "Nukapianguaq", "African Celebration", "Heaven Bound Train", "Missa Brevis", "The Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy", and more from those astonishing early sessions in 1991-95. Spanning fifteen years of recordings, the CD also features the choir under my direction in superb live performances of new material such as "Geordie" and "The Sparks Fly Upward", plus gorgeous concert versions of "Once I Had A Sweetheart" and the 2nd movement of "Three Ways To Vaccum Your House". I am especially delighted that the CD includes several beloved performances that have never been commercially available before, such as the ferocious live version of "TJAK!", the first, unreleased recording of "La Lluvia" which remains my favourite version of the piece, and a radiant, mystical "Amazing Grace", performed here with oboe instead of bagpipes.

Songlist: Heaven Bound Train, African Celebration, Amazing Grace, Nukapianguaq, La Lluvia, Geordie, The Sparks Fly Upward, Apple Tree Wassail, TJAK!, Missa Brevis-Kyrie, Missa Brevis-Gloria, Missa Brevis-Sanctus, Missa Brevis-Agnus Dei, Carol of the Ladder, J'ai vu le loup, Three Ways to Vaccuum Your House (II), Go Where I Send Thee, Once I Had a Sweetheart, The Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy

Amabile Youth Singers : Family Tree

Review: London, Ontario, Canada boasts seven children's choirs, and the Youth Singers, founded in 1985, is an auditioned choir of 50 young women ages 12 to 24. John Barron directs this sweet-singing choir in the music of Canadian composter Stephen Hatfield, who were the first choir to commission him, and their early recordings of his work were very important in establishing his reputation. There are 25 cuts here, favorites are "Uberlebensgross," the title tune,"O-Yo-Yo," "Let Me Ask You," the rhythmic "O Sapo," the haunting "A Maid That's Deep In Love" and "Dwa Serduszka." Cuts 13 to 25 are Hatfield's sublime "Christmas Cantata." There's considerable non-vocal percussion, and some flute, bass and acoustic guitar and handbells on the album. The beautiful, soaring blended voices are perfect for Hatfield's excellent compositions. A very special collection by one of the best youth choirs in the world.

Songlist: Uberlebensgross, For Elizabeth: Gold, Frank Innocence And Mirth, Take A Step, Family Tree, O -Yo - Yo, Let Me Ask You, Set, O Sapo, A Maid That's Deep In Love, Las Amarillas, Dwa Serduszka, Double Lotus, Christmas Cantata - When The Night Is Sweet With Starlight

Amabile Youth Singers : Live & Kicking!

Review: Composer's Notes: The title for this CD refers to the fact that it opens and closes with all 300 members of the Amabile family singing and dancing in killer versions of "Oolichan" and "Dubula". These live performances, which I conducted, show all the Amabile choirs at their most fiery and confident, and include several massed choir selections that give an extra richness to the sound. The massed Amabile trebles give stunning performances of "Ahe Lau Makani", "Ain't That News" and "Acceptance Speech". The Amabile men are at their Olympian peak with "Heaven Somewhere" and "O Yo Yo". "Living In A Holy City" and "All For Me Grog" are sung as only 300 voices can sing them, while the younger choirs in the Amabile family give stand-out versions of "Two Minutes Before Sleep", "Foggy Birthday Shuffle", "Set" and the previously unavailable "Three-Part Conniption". In addition to the fourteen live performances that capture the singers at their high-flying best, the CD includes three treasures from the studio: the Amabile men tear up the speakers with their show-stopping TTBB version of "Nukapianguaq" ; the Chamber Choir gives their definitive performance of "Hard Shoulder", one of my best pieces ; and the Junior Amabile Singers serve up one of the rarest of Hatfield recordings, the reggae-soaked "No Rock". Fans of Amabile and Hatfield will not be disappointed in this collection of treasures from the archives.

Songlist: Oolichan, Ahe Lau Makani, O Yo Yo, Two Minutes Before Sleep, Foggy Birthday Shuffle, Set, No Rock, Ka Hia Manu, Three- part Conniption, Ain't That News, Acceptance Speech, Nukapianguaq, All for Me Grog, Living in a Holy City, Hard Shoulder, Heaven Somewhere, Dubula

Amadeus Choir : American Choir Music

Review: There are almost a hundred years between the dates of birth of Charles Ives, 1874, and Eric Whitacre, born 1970, the youngest composer in this Kaleidoscope of American choral music. If someone takes a look at the standard works in music literature, there is hardly any American choral music to be found. The American works that can be perceived as approaching the traditions of western music do not appear to interest the specialist world in Europe. The story in concert halls and churches, as well as in recording studios, is quite different, however. Through the founding of many choirs, gospels and spirituals are more popular than ever and, on the programs of classical a cappella choirs, the works of Morten Lauridsen or Samuel Barber have already become classics. The Amadeus Choir is an ensemble of some 50 singers and was founded by Karl-Friedrich Beringer, conductor of the Windsbacher Knabenchor since 1978.

Songlist: Agnus Dei, Four Motets, Lux Aurumque, Cloudburst, Water Night, My Song In The Night, Nocturnes, The Rose, Lord God, Thy Sea Is Mighty, Crossing The Bar, The Battle Of Jericho, I'm Gonna Sing, Elijah Rock, Variations On "America"

American Repertory Singers : Come To Me

Review: The American Repertory Singers has got to be one of our very finest domestic choirs specializing in modern American music. The program's title piece is from James Hopkins whose smooth, dreamlike setting of "Come to Me in the Silence of Night" has enjoyed considerable success. Other discoveries include David Conte's feverish "Charm Me Asleep", a splendid setting of Elizabethan poet Robert Herrick's restless verse. Also new to me is Jane Marshall, who contributes a delightful pair of bookend madrigals. The contrast between the initial song's blithe and bouncy air and the warmly reminiscent comfort of its companion piece is very touching. Daniel Pinkham's "Love Can Be Still" is a cycle of four poems by Norma Farber, full of startling turns of musical pphrase, infusing Pinkham's unmistakable American idiom with some complex, late-Monteverdi tricks. Perhaps the best are from Nestor himself: the four sentiment-drenched setting of Four Part-songs from the "Highlands", including two traditional texts and two from Robert Burns. Three include lovely obbligatos for solo flute. "Ca' the Yowes" and "Will ye Go, Lassie, Go?" are especially haunting.

Songlist: Come to Me in the Silence of the Night , Love Can Be Still , Take me walking in your mind , After the storm is over , Da Capo , Charm Me Asleep , Four Songs from the Highlands, Ca' the Yowes, O, My Luve is Like a Red, Red Rose, Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?, Fareweel tae Tarwathie, Go, Lovely Rose, Campion Suite, There is a Garden in Her Face, Thrice Toss these Oaken Ashes, When to her Lute Corinna Sings, To Music Bent, Night was Well as Brightest Day, A Lover and his Lass, An Older Lover and His Lass, Reincarnations, Opus 6, The Coolin (The Fair Haired One), Love, bone-quiet, Mary Hines, Anthony O'Daly

American Repertory Singers : Richard Wienhorst - Sacred Music

Review: A most sensitive and attractive recording. The American Repertory Singers achieve choral artistry with consistently lovely tonal quality and astounding rhythmic control and flexibility. Sara Stern and Dotian Levalier participate with highly pleasing effect and artistry. The first track of the CD is a setting of the Welsh tune 'Ar hyd y nos'. The combining of the two instrumentalists with the choir provided a captivating and alluring textual attractiveness. The Seven Words of Christ from the Cross makes most effective use of dissonance. Schuneman's reading is wondrously apt and his selection of the soloist (David F. Eberhardt) to sing the part of the Evangelist is very admirable.

Songlist: God, Who Made the Earth, Missa Brevis, Kyrie, Sanctus & Benedictus, Gloria, Agnus Dei , Psalm 147, Alleluia! How good it is to sing praises, The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem, Great is our Lord, The Lord lifts up the lowly, Sing to the Lord with Thanksgiving, The Seven Words of Christ from the Cross, Alleluia Verses for Easter

American Repertory Singers : Silent Night

Review: An extraordinary set of carol arrangements. As in the case with virtually all of Daron Hagen's music, he takes the listener on an unusual journey, frequently only alluding to tunes or portions of tunes already more than familiar to the listener. As one would expect of a composer who has devoted so much of his life to vocal music and the relationship between music and text, surprising things occur.

American Repertory Singers : Sounding Joy

Review: One of the professional services offered by Boston-based, mixed voice American Repertory Singers is the recording of scores to accompany the distribution of publishers new issues. All the music on this disc was written in the last two decades of the 20th century, and it is a representative sampling of some of the best contemporary sacred music by America's choral composers who have written for all denominations of Christian churches. 21 cuts, some are accompanied. "Sounding Joy," an dramatic 8-minute arrangement of the spiritual "Steal Away to Jesus" with trumpets, a couple of nice pieces by Richard DeLong, "O Lord, Increase Our Faith" and "There is a Country," and three compositions by Leo Nestor, "And Peace at the Last," "To Rise Beyond the Stars" and "Who Is She Ascends So High?" Five "Little Prayers" by Daron Aric Hagen, 3 by Frank Ferko, "I Was Glad When They Said Unto Me," "I Will Give Thanks to You, O Lord" and "O Gracious Light," 2 by Jane Marshall, "Of Hospitality" and "Song of Simeon," and Daniel Pinkham's "A Sermon on Wisdom"-this is all beautifully performed, hard-to-find contemporary sacred music by one of the best Contemporary Christian ensembles.

Songlist: Sounding Joy, Steal Away to jesus , O Lord, Increase Our Faith , There is a Country , And Peace at the Last, To Rise Beyond the Stars , Who Is She Ascends So High?, Little Prayers , Almighty Father, Incline Thine Ear, Our Father, Who Arrt In heaven, Why Do You Seek Rest, We Mayy Be Heroic, lord, God in Heaven, Still, Still with Thee , A Sermon on Wisdom , I Was Glad When They Said unto Me, I Will Give Thanks to You, O Lord , O Gracious ight ("Phos hilaron") , Of Hospitality, When I survey the Wondrous Gross, Song of Simeon ("Nunc dimittis") , Festival Te Deum

American Repertory Singers : Ye Shall Have Song - Music of Randall Thompson

Review: Since Randall Thompson (1899-1984), perhaps America's most famous composer of choral music, it is significant that at last a retrospective selection of this music has been recorded. "Ye Shall Have A Song" is a collection of works dating from 1922 to 1970, when the bulk of his choruses had already been written. Starting with his early masterpiece, the 8 movements of "The Peaceable Kingdom," ("Say Ye to the Righteous," "Woe Unto Them," "'The Noise of a Multitude," "Howl Ye," "The Paper Reeds by the Brooks," "But These Are They," "Have Ye Not Known" and the title tune), the CD progresses to "Bittersweet" of 1970, representing his last style. "The Best of Rooms," "Alleluia," and four "Odes of Horace" are followed by the oldest composition, 1922's "The Last Invocation." The Singers make these difficult-to-perform, eclectic and sublimely beautiful pieces sound effortless. A worthy retrospective of the works of an American master!

Songlist: The Peaceable Kingdom, Say Ye to the Righteous, Woe Unto Them, The Noise of a Multitude, Howl Ye, The Paper Reeds by the Brooks, But These Are They, Have Ye Not Known?, Ye Shall have a Song, Bitter-Sweet, The Best of Rooms, Alleluia, Odes of Horace, O fons Bandusiae, Vitas hinnuleo, Montium Custos, Felices ter, The Last Invocation

Anuna : Best of

Review: Founded in 1987, Ireland's acclaimed 13-strong mixed-voice choral sensation Anuna, under the Musical Direction of Dublin composer Michael McGlynn and Directed by John McGlynn, recorded a series of excellent albums and a DVD after their leap into the spotlight touring and recording with Riverdance. The recordings from which "The Best of's" 22 tunes were selected are "Anuna," Invocation," "Omnis," "Deep Dead Blue," "Behind the Closed Eye," "Cynara," "Winter Songs," "Sanctus" and "Invocations of Ireland (DVD). Our (hard to pick) favorites are "August," from a poem by Francis Ledwidge, the chant "Christus Resurgens," a rare early Irish song written in 1150, the 16th century "Gaudette" from the Piae Cantiones, Michael McGlynn's adaption of a poem by St. Columcille, "The Wild Song," commissioned by Rajaton, the traditional "Dulaman," "Nobilis Humilis," an ode to 13th century St. Magnus of the Orkney Islands and to St. Patrick, the Irish romantic ballads "Ceann Dubh Dilis" and "The Lass of Glenshee" and "Wind on Sea," with lovely solos by John and Michael McGlynn. There is considerable accompaniment here, including guitar, low whistle, viola/violin, percussion, vibraphone, flute, Concert and Irish Harp, uileann pipes and tin whistle. Every song on this generous, well-chosen collection is powerful, haunting and beautiful. Don't miss "The Best of " Anuna!

Anuna : Essential Anuna

Review: Since their first, self-titled debut CD in 1993, Irish mixed-voice choral ensemble Anuna has created an additional four excellent CDs in their quest to explore their Celtic heritage and develop and discover their own sound. Their connection with Riverdance, which began with the recording of their hit "Cloudsong," exposed millions to the group's music. "Essential" is right there with the group's program, haunting, surreal soundscapes. There are 19 songs, many of our favorites are pieces written by group founder Michael McGlynn, the moody "The Wild Song," "Wind on Sea," the soaring "Kyrie," "Blackthorn," "Victimae," the sublime "Pie Jesu" and "Hymn to the Virgin," the dance tune "The Rising of the Sun" and the fast-moving a cappella "Dulaman." Where the piece is Medieval Irish like the powerful "Cristus Resurgens," or traditional Irish like "The Flower of Maherally" and "Siuil, a Ruin," McGlynn arranges it, where the words are not his, as in "Behind the Closed Eye" and "August," whose lyrics were written by Francis Ledwidge, McGlynn writes the music. The result is a lovely, seamless collection whose beauty touches us once again on so many levels. We expected no less! Some light accompaniment.

Songlist: The Blue Bird, Cormacus Scripsit, The Wild Song, Siuil, a Ruin, Wind on Sea, The Rising of the Sun, The Flower of maherally, Dulaman, Kyrie, Deep Dead Blue, Blackthorn, Behind the Closen Eye, August, Christus Resurgens, Victimae, Pie Jesu, Hymn to the Virgin, Cynara, War Is Over

Anuna : Omnis

Review: Recorded twice, once in 1995 and again in 1996 for international release, Omnis is the best of these two recordings, and contains 3 bonus tracks, one of which ("A Stor mo Chroi") has never been released before. Anuna founder Michael McGlynn calls Omnis a defining CD of some of the group's most memorable moments, from the energetic "Dulaman," now a choral standard throughout the world, to the mystical and exotic "O Viridissima." All three of the lovely "Tenebrae" responsories are now included on one recording. 20 songs, remastered and re-edited, a "best-of" which includes "The Flower of Maherally," "Maria Matrem," "Ave Generosa," "Roisin Dubh" and "The Mermaid." This is spirited, haunting, memorable music from Ireland's finest mixed chorus. The full color liner notes has some beautiful pictures of the group and all the lyrics.

Songlist: Salve Rex Gloriae, Ardaigh Cuan, Beati Quorum Via, The Flower of Maherally, Geantrai, Maria Matrem, Codail a Linbh, Gaudete, Agnus Dei , Ave Generosa, O Viridissima, Dulaman, A Stor Mo Chroi, Roisin Dubh, The Mermaid, St. Nicholas, Diwanit Bugale, Tenebrae I, Tenebrae II, Tenebrae III

Review: Sanctus features seven tracks, including the famous "Miserere Mei Deus" by Allegri. This sublime piece features stratospheric soprano vocals and runs to just under 13 minutes in length. The album includes four original pieces by Michael McGlynn, including his "Agnus Dei". Anuna : Sensation

Review: Vocal group Anuna's first release of new material in six years is a major leap forward from their last few offerings, throwing into high relief the progress that founder and group leader Michael McGlynn has made as a composer. The opening track '0 Ignis Spiritus' brings a text by medieval mystic Hildegarde von Bingen to glorious life, with Ken Edge's saxophone matching the reedy timbre of soloist Miriam Blennerhassett's wonderfully rich voice. The dreamy title track (McGlynn's setting of the Rimbaud poem of that name) is another highlight, with the gravel-voiced Gilles Servat speaking the verses over the ensemble's multi-layered harmonies. Bringing the CD to an electrifying close is the shimmering, densely textured '0 Maria', which deserves to become part of the standard repertoire for choral groups everywhere.

Songlist: O Ignis Spiritus, Brezairola, Sensation, Silver River, Shining Water, Lux Aeterna, The Road Of Passage, Whispers Of Paradise, Maid In The Moor, O Maria, Tenebrae IV

Ars Nova : Portuguese Polyphony

Review: Portugal was historically by no means isolated from the mainstream of European culture, although the earlier periods of Portuguese polyphony may be relatively little known. There were, nevertheless, monastic and ecclesiastical connections with other parts of Europe, and, of course, with Rome, while the proximity of Spain, most evident in the golden age of Portuguese polyphony, ensured that Portugal was part of the wider European tradition of polyphony. The vocal group Ars Nova is one of the most distinguished chamber choirs in Scandinavia in the field of early and new music. The twelve singers of the choir and the director Bo Holten have produced a series of internationally acclaimed compact discs and have given more than 650 concerts and broadcasts in Scandinavia, the rest of Europe, Israel and Japan.

Atlanta Singers : Chantez Noel

David Brensinger conducts the Singers, whose repertoire on "Chantez" includes sacred Renaissance masterworks (Praetorius' "Psallite," "Swete Was The Song the Virgine Soong," Victoria's "O Magnum Mysterium," and "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen"), traditional carols ("Il est ne," "Wassail Song," "Silent Night," "Jingle Bells" and "Deck The Hall"), traditional Spanish carols ("A la nanita nana" and "Esta noche nace un Nino"), and traditional French carols ("Dans les hombres de la nuit," the title tune, and "Entre le boeuf et l'ane gris"). Aurora Chorus : Full Circle

Review: Since Portland OR's Aurora Chorus-women in harmony for peace, was founded by David York in 1992, it has provided both novice and experienced singers the opportunity to transform a love of singing into an outstanding ensemble experience. Aurora welcomes singers at all skill levels, without competitive auditions, and maintains a membership of over 100 singers. Led by director and composer Joan Symko (Aurora has premiered over 30 of her compositions and arrangements), the ensemble produces two major concerts, and performs at several community outreach events every year. Singer, songwriter and performing/recording artist Betsy Rose joins the group in the 19 songs on "Full Circle." Some favorites are Betsy's "Open Up and Let Her Through," "A Circle of Women Singing" and "Welcome to the Circle," Joan's "The Summer Day" and "I AM," the Shaker tune "Come Pretty Love," Diane Benjamin's "Somebody," Cris Williamson's "Sister," David York's "Aurora" and Beatrice Johnson Reagon's "Well, Enough Said About That!" There is some light accompaniment of piano, cello, violin, flute, bazouki, hand drums and percussion. All the cuts are beautiful, deeply-felt pieces that touch and move us-come join Aurora's joyous 10th Anniversary celebration!
