Swinglish Mix

Group members: Suzanne Harrington, lead; Eleanor Hawkins, tenor; Naima Meyer, bass; and Patricia Hawley, baritone

2003 Queens Of Harmony, who had placed in the top five every year for the previous five years, triumphantly brought home the gold. The title was a second for lead Suzanne Harrington and bass Naima Meyer, who won with the GROWING GIRLS quartet in 1989. You'll find lead Suzanne Harrington chilling out in Rönninge, Sweden with her hubby Doug (Second Edition, 1989) and boys Jack and Tom. Moving to this side of the Atlantic, you'll catch bass Naima Meyer on the Gulf, enjoying the warmer temperatures of sunny Florida with husband Jamie (Second Edition, 1989) and kiddos Adam and Selma. Take a short jaunt north to the rolling hills of Kentucky horse country, and there'll be tenor Eleanor Hawkins sipping a mint julep with her hub Peter, while kids Spencer, Delaney, Carter and Baby Elliot bet on the ponies. Hop in the plane for one last trip across the continent to find baritone Patty Hawley Pennycook meandering the back roads of the California wine country with husband David and their new baby girl, Carly Jean. If you charted their individual routes to and from rehearsals, it might remind you of the map scenes in Indiana Jones!

But once you look past the minor details of scheduling and planning, I know you'll agree that Swinglish Mix certainly possesses the major elements it takes to be a truly successful quartet. They are four great friends who believe in the fun and irresistible allure of locking and ringing chords. These gals may be spread out across the world, but their musical blend and personal bonds keep them coming back for more!

The 2003 Queens of Harmony show why they won the crowns on this new release as their amazing voices and crisp arrangements are front and center on this fine recording. Featuring a blend of both voices and nationalities (2 members live in Sweden the others in the US) this top-notch quartet sing some lesser-known gems along with a couple of classic medleys including the very clever "City Medley". The Harry Connick Jr. song "Whisper Your Name" is given a delightful rendition as is the Alan Menken gem "Little Patch of Heaven" from Disney's "Home On The Range". We particularly enjoyed the Phil Collins song "You'll Be In My Heart" and so will these talented singers once you have listened to this recording again and again.

Louisville, KY-based Swinglish Mix have medaled at Sweet Adelines conventions since their inception, starting with a fourth place finish in Salt Lake City in 1997, third in Orlando, FL, third again in Portland, OR, and finally striking Gold in Nashville, making them 2003 International champs! Eleanor Hawkins, Suzanne Harrington, Patty Hawley and Naima Meyer did at one time all live in Louisville, Ky., three of them as members of Pride of Kentucky Chorus, and this is where they got their start as a quartet. The title was a second for lead Suzanne and bass Naima, who won with the Growing Girls quartet in 1989. "Live and Well" is a nice mix of the group's best, including 2 very funny live cuts from Nashville, "The Moment I Saw Your Eyes" and "Don't Worry, Be Happy." There's also a live version of the song that won it for them in Nashville, "Last Night On the Back Porch." "The Little Girl/Boy" is a heartstring-tugger with the best of them, as is "Mistakes," "I Can Dream, Can't I" "Down Among the Sugarcane" and "What'll I Do." 13 tunes, many of them live. Sexy, funny, able to belt and bend chords as well as any Sweet Ads quartet we've ever heard‹it's no accident they're wearing tiaras and gold medals on the cover of "Live & Well!" Highly Recommended
