This tender a cappella treatment of John Coltrane's beautiful ballad, "Naima," without lyrics. It features a female soloist, with rich broken-chord harmonizations beneath. Randy has his "finger on the trigger" with this a cappella instrumental-style arrangement of the Quincy Jones' funk tune, "Love Is In Control." You'll have fun with this one! The first a cappella vocal version of this famous Chick Corea Latin classic, "Spain." This chart features a strong baritone or alto soloist in the rubato introduction, accompanied by thick vocal "spread voicings," then kicks into the familiar up-tempo samba feel, with quick octave unisons for all voices. After going through the tune, it opens up for improvisation solos over the chorus, with the bass singers continuing the samba-bass feel while the upper voices do horn-type hits and pads behind the soloist. A high, then low ending brings the piece to an impressive close. Requires good range by soprano and bass. First tenor part can be sung by alto if necessary. "Take 5" was commissioned by UNC for the Axidentals to sing on a special concert with the Dave Brubeck.

Alleluia The Gate of Heaven The Eternal Dove Fare Well Bitter-Sweet

Since that day in 1940, 'Alleluia' this classic of classics has become one of the nation’s most-often performed choral works. Rare is the church, school, community, or professional choir that has not sung it. The masterful construction and simplicity of text (Alleluia, Amen) make the Alleluia suitable for almost any choir for almost any occasion. 'The Gate of Heaven' Composed for the dedication of the Jessie Ball duPont Chapel, Hollins College, Virginia, 1959. It is particularly suitable for the dedication of religious buildings. The Eternal Dove was composed in 1968 to honor Harvard University Professor G. Wallace Woodworth. It is closely related to the composer’s Mass of the Holy Spirit of which Dr. Woodworth gave the first complete performance. 'Fare Well' was written for performance by the combined high scholl choirs of Calhoun, Kennedy, and Mepham, New York, in 1973. The three-stanza poem by Walter De La Mare (1873-1956) closes with, “Look thy last on all things lovely, / Every hour. Let no night / Seal thy sense in deathly slumber / Till to delight / Thou have paid thy utmost blessing; Since that all things wouldst praise / Beauty took from those who loved them / In other days.” 'Bitter Sweet' was first performed by the choir of the Church of the Incarnation, New York City, on Oct. 25, 1970, under the direction of Thomas Dunn, who first called Thompson's attention to George Herbert's poignant and profoundly religious poem.

An original composition, 'Occam's Edge' is an aggressive a cappella chart that will challenge your singers, but is quite attainable. It comes off almost as a fusion tune because of the groove, the stabbing lush chords and quickly moving harmony. A scat solo is featured and a vocal percussionist is important to the performance. An exciting shout section connects the solo section and the head-out. This one is, again, like nothing you've ever heard vocalists sing! 'His Eye is on the Sparrow' starts out simply as a rubato ballad with a soulful solo, but then adds vocal percussion in a jazz waltz groove. When the vocals come in after a short percussion break, it sounds highly reminiscent of a Take 6 tune with quickly moving harmonies, lots of great dominant sounds and exciting hits in the background vocals. The unique six-voice a cappella orchestration of 'Toccata and Fugue in D Minor' is used in order to fully capture the thick chord voicings of this piece. The swing section contains original melodies based on the already established Toccata theme and crescendos into a tenor and bass (vocal-drum) solo. The work concludes with the original finale of the classical fugue. Matt Falker's arrangement of 'A Time For Love' (originally written by Johnny Mandel)' is a beautiful a cappella ballad. The chart is written for SSATBB voices and features a male/female duet in the latter part of the piece. 'Scat Blues in C' is a fun, medium-tempo big band-type bop head in an a cappella setting. Vocal "horns" and vocal "walking bass" make for an easy but effecive choir showpiece, with plenty of room for vocal scatting over the form. Issa Sorensen's arrangement of Bobby McFerrins 'Good Lovin' will bring the house down with its awesome groove. 'I Hold Your Hand In Mine' is a hilarious novelty song by famed satirist/songwriter,Tom Lehrer, gets a pseudo-sophisticated arrangement here, resulting in a subtle but very witty comic effect! Great change-of-pace in a jazz vocal program! A few words can be changed if needed. "I Don't Know Why I Do' is a hot ballad of the 40's in block harmonies. The tempo is medium. Jeremy Landig's arrangement of 'Pure Imagination' is five parts and is inspired by the sound of the Real Group. "Crunch" chords and interesting turns of harmony abound, making this a real showoff piece. Set mostly in a rubato ballad style, it shifts dramatically and unexpectedly between keys in the first section. The bridge leads into a sublime soli section bringing the melody back in a slow swing reminiscent of Lil Darlin' but in 7/4! The bridge returns briefly (this time in a Take 6-influenced swing) before the arrangement winds to a close in the original ballad feel. Whitney Houston made Dolly Parton's 'I Will Always Love You' the longest running #1 hit in the country's history, and this arrangement is true to her legendary version: opening simply with the trademark soprano soloist alone, adding a rich pulsing texture after the first verse and building gradually to a chilling climax.

'Make Someone Happy' goes from a tender unison beginning to an exciting climax and a deceptively moving ending. Much of the beauty of this piece lies in simplicity and pure sincerity. 'It Ain't Necessarily So' is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Solos (or should we say, "sermons?") are passed from voice to voice while the bass line makes comical interjections about the lyrics. The close, melting harmonies of 'You Go To My Head' beautifully paints the lyrics and mood of Fred Coots' timeless ballad. Soprano and alto are in a warm and mellow low register for the majority of the tune, while tenor and bass have a light and airy quality to blend. Rhythmic notation should serve as a guideline only, as a very free interpretation of time is needed to bring out the intense imagery of the lyrics and the "bouquet" of the music. Perform this song when you want your listeners to leave hearing in their minds a "haunting refrain". 'Embraceable You' features opening bass pedal with voices layering above. Contrasting open and dense voicing create lustrous harmonic interest. A perfect program piece - a short gem that young singers can really dig their teeth into.

An English/American folk standard, this arrangement of 'Aura Lee' is a group feature and begins as a ballad with octave unison, then some traditional harmony continues with ever-increasing reharmonization and works its way into a medium-swing setting with tight, rich harmony. 'Amazing Grace' is a traditional gospel, shuffle arrangement with jazz harmonies is sure to satisfy. The larger the ensemble, the better this one will sound. The 6/8 meter keeps the gospel flow and the harmonic structure will keep the jazz ears awake with its reharmonization. The opening and closing solo melody may be as free as your gospel ear desires. The 'Shenandoa' arrangement is here in a spiced up ballad setting. It begins with a tenor solo with later group entrance featuring diverse, harmonic settings, key changes, soprano solo, short tenor/soprano duet and, at the end of the group harmony, gently fades just like the ol' river. Close harmony chords and arpeggiated textures combine to make for a lush, complex, and moving rendering of, the Irish ballad, Danny Boy. A tenor solo and baritone duet share the melody with the ensemble. The simple folk melody in 'The Water is Wide' is the foundation for this complex choral work. Each verse has its own flavor, ranging from flowing arpeggiated textures to rich close harmonies.

It was an interesting challenge to arrange "Overture to the Marriage of Figaro" for eight voices. The Swingle Singers group has often used it to open a concert. Of course it is very difficult but quite a few choirs have managed to master it. I think it works equally well on or off mikes, as long as a proper balance is maintained among the voices. This is the first of the four movements of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nacthmusik," all four of which Ward Swingle has arranged for voices with the hopes that groups will perform "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" in its entirety. For the Swingle Singers this offered a change from the succession of 2- or 3-minutes pieces typical of many of our programs.

All The Things You Are It's Just One Of Those Things I Get A Kick Out Of You Love Walked In Li'l Darlin SSAATTBB

This wonderful Neal Hefti composition, "Li'l Darlin," was written for the Count Basie band. Master word-spinner Jon Hendricks has added some lovely, romantic lyrics. This a cappella treatment of  "I Get A Kick Out You" is one of Cole Porter's best loved songs. Some of the scat is in hommage to the Double Six of Paris. "Love Walks In" lies in the great pantheon of Gershwin songs. Ward Swingle made a rather easy SATB arrangement dedicated to Cole Tyrell and his fine South Haven (Michigan) High School Choir. This is an 8-voice a cappella version of the well-known Cole Porter standard.  In this version of "It's Just One Of Those Things" the scat can be sung as written, or improvised upon. Since it goes along at quite a clip, it can stand a few rehearsals. This arrangement of "All The Things You Are," the wonderful Jerome Kern song, is separated into three sections: the beginning is in a free, traditional choral style, then there is some typical "Swingle" scatting, followed by a big-band section. It was recently voted "Favorite Vocal Jazz Chart" by a group of choral directors who specialize in jazz repertoire.

'Pastime With Good Company' is an evocation of Renaissance vocal and instrumental styles in which some of the singers are asked to imitate recorders, tabors and shaums. 'The Agincourt Song' recounts the victory of Henry V over the French at Agincourt. As in 'Pastime with Good Company,' the singers must imitate the sounds of Renaissance instruments. 'Country Dances' is a fast-moving potpourri of traditional country tunes. One theme that recurs is that of the Arkansas Traveler. The accompanying sounds evoke various country-music instruments: fiddles, banjos, jugs, etc. 'Music History 101 is a trip through Music History to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," treated as a Gregorian Chant, a Medieval Round, a Madrigal, a Bach Chorale, a Schubert Lied and many other styles including jazz and rap. El paisanito features an alto duet with an accompaniment that imitates strumming Spanish guitars. In the men's version, the duet is sung by two male altos. 'L'amour de moi' features a soprano solo with a string-like accompaniment along with vocalized bass and drums. The three melodies in 'Tour garcon qui sert bien son maitre' come from the province of Quebec. These arrangements were commissioned by the McGill Univeristy Chamber Choir in Montreal.

"Gigue (Suite in C Major)" is a movement from one of Bach's unaccompanied Cello sonatas, arranged here for tenor and bass. It has a fast 3/4 jazz feeling, with some tricky dove-tailing between the voices, the object being to make it sound like on instrument. The Swingle Singers have often used this "Organ Fugue BMV 578" as a concert opener. The challenge in singing without a rhythm section is to make the piece swing without the help of the instruments.The "Bourree" has probably been the most widely performed of all Ward Swingle arrangements. This is an a cappella version using three different styles: child-like "la-la-la's," gently swinging"oo" sounds and rather brassy "ah" sounds.

This version of "Oh, Johnny, Oh" is an evocation of the Andrews Sisters' recording. Three soloists become the Andrews Sisters, while the other singers scat the accompaniment (brass, rhythm and bass guitar). Here the singers have to keep things swinging without the help of bass and drums. Al Jarreau wrote some wonderefully "onomatopaeic" words for Brubeck's fine piano piece, "Blue Rondo a' la Turk.". Ward Swingle transcribed the piano part as faithfully as possible for voices.Perhaps Kurt Weill's most famous song, Mack the Knife was written during his Berlin period, first sung by his wife Lotte Lenya; and later, in a very popular jazz version, by the great Bobby Darin. "Saints Fugue" was first written for the French Swingle group in the early 70's using only scat syllables. Ward Swingle revised it later adding the traditional words.

'How Do I Love Thee' is a a traditional choral setting of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's wonderful poem. 'Tre Karleksdikter' means 'Three love-poems.' These are settings of well-known Swedish poets, and would present a good challenge for a choir wanting to explore the Swedish language. 'It Was A Lover And His Lass' is a setting of Shakepeare's famous sonnet. The text has a lot of scat-like syllables (e.g. "hey-ding-a-ding") which Ward Swingle was able to adapt and use as part of the guitar-like accompaniment.

The Swingle Singers often use "Flight Of The Bumble-Bee"as an encore piece. It has to go as fast as possible using a great variety of scat syllables in order to avoid lock-jaw. It also includes a fairly literal vocal transcription of Debussy's famous piano piece, "Claire de Lune." The tessituras are quite wide ranging from low D-flats for the basses to high B-flats for the sopranos. It is probably best sung with the help of microphones. This transciption of a Chopin "Etude Op. 25 No.9" is probably easier to sing than it is to play! It should be performed at a brisk pace, with the main melody alternating between the Tenors and the First Sopranos.

A brief, warm rubato opening is followed by a swing scat duet, full group in major and minor keys, a foray into 3/4, then a final swing section under a scat solo. SSATTB requiring a strong bass. 'Winter Wonderland,' is written for unaccompanied voices in a heasy-swinging, Take 6 style. Though this chart features written solos for both male and female voices, the climatic point is the difficult big band style soli later in the chart. This rousing crowd-pleaser is also filled with quotes from other related songs and styles. Requires a group with a great sense of swing! 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' has a light and happy feel. Bass pedals, soprano descant, bass lines and rhythmic shots occur throughout. A modulation in the last A section is delightfully unexpected. It's a great chart to end the Christmas show.
