New York Voices : A Cappella Arrangements

Review: The World War II classic, "I'll Be Seeing You", by Irving Kahal and Sammy Fain, evokes memories of the big band era, while staying in the a cappella realm. Rubato, mellow blends and dynamic shaping are keys to this Darmon Meader arrangement. It creates the melancholy feelings that are significant in time of war when loved ones are missed and longed for. A beautiful selection for the holidays and the New Year, as well as graduation. "Baby Driver" - Sheer, unbridled fun! For college or adult jazz chorus, this arrangement as sung by the New York Voices is a bit tricky, but well worth the effort. It features incredible harmony and rhythm and some a cappella sections, but the purpose of this piece is not to get technical-just to have fun! Four-part scat singing frames the piece on either end, while your baritone soloist goes to town (with great choral support) on each verse. Baby Driver, extracted from the New York Voices Songs of Paul Simon CD, is a toe-tappin', hand-clappin' jazz party. Invite everyone you know! The timeless Irish folk song "The Last Rose Of Summer" has been arranged by the renowned Darmon Meader of the group New York Voices. Simple unison and harmonies that respect the tune and lyric open then graduate to a more contemporary sound to add freshness without difficulty. A dream to teach and sing!

Songlist: I'll Be Seeing You, Baby Driver, The Last Rose Of Summer, Come Home

New York Voices : New York Voices Collection Vol 1

Review: NEW YORK VOICES is the Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble renowned for their excellence in jazz and the art of group singing. Like the great groups that have come before, such as Lambert, Hendrick and Ross, Singers Unlimited, Manhattan Transfer and Take 6, they have learned from the best and taken the art form to new levels. Written by Caprice Fox and arranged by Darmon Meader, New York Voices' A Cappella arrangement of 'Silence of Time' is a gorgeous rubato vignette for the mature vocal group. Intriguing harmonies and voicings give this arrangement its rich texture. In the tradition of jazz vocalese, Duke Ellington's 'Caravan' comes alive with new lyrics and additional new music. An exciting and challenging program selection for the more advanced vocal jazz ensemble. Heavily influenced by Chick Corea, 'The sultan Fainted,' a Darmon Meader/Peter Eldridge original, combines HIGH energy Brazilian rhythm with intricate harmonies and wacky lyrics! 'To Dare the Moon' incorporates lush voicings, alternating between samba and funk/rock grooves. Open solo sections add plenty of variety to this exciting original. 'Sign of Spring' is set in a Brazilian funk style. With an opening section in Portuguese moving to solos in English then dynamic chorus sections, this is one of the most exciting new charts we've seen. Very, very hip! The funk/rock song, 'National Amnesia,' by Darmon Meader has become very popular for the right reasons. Very hip voicings combine with a message that is right for today.

Review: Here are more dazzling arrangements by the world-famous vocal group, New York Voices. ''Round Midnight' opens as a rubato ballad, then solo alternating with choral sections building to a double-time vocal scat solo. After the solos, then vocals build to a dramatic and strong ending climax. 'Baroque Samba' opens in four-part with a traditional Baroque approach, then surprisingly changes to samba style. This chart is appropriate for an array of concert programming. In 'Now or Never,' an unusual and lovely opening leads to the solo soprano verse, which alternates with a fun and catchy chorus. A recurring mixed meter section and beautiful lyrics add to make this a popular favorite. 'Sassy Samba' is a smooth yet driving Jimmy Heath samba with soli opening that leads to a soprano solo, then alternates group vocals with solo breaks, a vocal percussion section and drum solo. Packed with fun and lots of audience appeal. 'Open Invitation,' a New York Voices original, is set in a relaxed Brazilian style. The song contains smooth melodic content and lush harmonies. This is a great alto feature which builds to an exciting vamp.

Review: 'Overs' is an introspective beauty full of angular voicings and a poignant lyric. Peter Eldrige's arrangement of this excellent Paul Simon tune offers much solo opportunity, or if preferred, the piece can be performed as a group feature. 'Me and Julio' is another great NYV arrangement of a Paul Simon classic. 'Soon One Day' features an unusual a cappella opening into the dramatic solo as recorded by Caprice Fox on the recent Hearts of Fire album. Alternating solo and chorus sections build to an interesting shout section with influences of Gospel and African music. Auxiliary percussion and vocal sounds add to the impact in this exciting arrangement. A beautiful opening for mezzo soloist begins 'Now That The Love Is Over,' a funk/rock arrangement by Darmon Meader. This chart will put a real "kick" into your jazz group.

Phil Mattson : The Arrangements of Phil Mattson

Review: Here's a collection from vocal jazz guru Phil Mattson. "Love For Sale" was written for Chanticleer in a gospel a cappella feeling featuring a female solo. "Dancing In The Dark" was arranged for the Swedish vocal jazz ensemble, The Real Group. It is written in an a cappella bossa nova groove with some quasi-funk sections. Randy Crenshaw : Cool Contemporary Jazz

Review: This tender a cappella treatment of John Coltrane's beautiful ballad, "Naima," without lyrics. It features a female soloist, with rich broken-chord harmonizations beneath. Randy has his "finger on the trigger" with this a cappella instrumental-style arrangement of the Quincy Jones' funk tune, "Love Is In Control." You'll have fun with this one! The first a cappella vocal version of this famous Chick Corea Latin classic, "Spain." This chart features a strong baritone or alto soloist in the rubato introduction, accompanied by thick vocal "spread voicings," then kicks into the familiar up-tempo samba feel, with quick octave unisons for all voices. After going through the tune, it opens up for improvisation solos over the chorus, with the bass singers continuing the samba-bass feel while the upper voices do horn-type hits and pads behind the soloist. A high, then low ending brings the piece to an impressive close. Requires good range by soprano and bass. First tenor part can be sung by alto if necessary. "Take 5" was commissioned by UNC for the Axidentals to sing on a special concert with the Dave Brubeck.

Songlist: Naima, Love Is In Control, Stolen Moments, Take Five, I Belong to You, Stolen Moments

Real Group : Arrangements of The Real Group Vol 1

Review: 'How Come It Is So Hard To Be The Way You Are' is a rockin' humorous look at today's society. The recording of the English version of this song can only be found on the album, 'Get Real.' 'Heavenly Crystal,' the english version of a folk song well known in Sweden, this arrangement is inspired by the music of J.S. Bach. Just plain cool - there's no other way to describe Anders Edenroth's newest arrangement, 'Words'! Edenroth has created a witty, sophisticated examination of the nature of 'words' - their sense, their social role, and the varied ways they can be sung and spoken - which will intrigue jazz choirs at all levels. "Gota" - Pronounced 'geu-ta' (hard 'g') - has its name from the Faeroe Islands in the Northern Atlantic. The music line and wordless vocal jazz treatment fuses with ethnic folk music in a truly original way. A true 'performance piece' and favorite in the repertoire of Swedish vocal giants The Real Group, Gota has quickly gained recognition world wide. For vocal jazz oriented high school and beyond.

Real Group : Arrangements of The Real Group Vol 4

Review: "There Will Never Be Another You " is a sensitive treatment of the jazz standard that opens as a ballad before moving to a buoyant swing feel. Great tune, great arrangement. SATB a cappella with soprano solo. "Come Sunday" - Careful voice leading makes the contemporary harmonic changes and chord voicings in this chart quite accessible in this SSATBB a cappella arrangement. It features a strong 5 and 6 part into featuring the first chorus with a pyramid background behind a soprano melody moving into spread harmonies. The second chorus is open for a improvised solo with a tag over a 3-part harmonized background with walking bass. The chart ends with a 6-way harmonized "quasi-shout" chorus moving back into the origianl melody. Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke" never had it so good in this marvelous Edenroth arrangement.

Review: 'Teach Me Tonight' is an excellent arrangement by Jason A. Smith. Lots of room for improvisation! "Stolen Moments' is an Oliver Nelson classic with lyrics by Mark Murphy. bittersweet clusters and quartal voicings are followed by a 12-bar minor blues solo vamp and out. 'He's Asleep' is a little known tune, written by Alf Clausen (composer for The Simpsons and Moonlighting), and the great lyricist, Tommy Wolf. The arrangement features contrapuntal vocal lines that weave around through mysterious text. Although the piece is harmonically sophisticated, when performed well, it has a feeling of simple innocence. This arrangement would be a worthy challenge for any experienced group. 'The Man I Love' is a 6-part arrangement with fresh reharmonizations. It features an alto soloist, who can stick to the score or embellish freely, depending on her character. 'How Do You Keep The Music Playing' is a beautiful ballad that was originally recorded by James Ingram and Patti Austin as the theme song for the movie, Best Friends. This four-part a cappella arrangement is sensitive to the melodic and lyrical development of the tune, and features the soprano section and/or a female solo throughout.

Review: This mournful arrangement of the Thelonius Monk ballad, 'Round Midnight' starts with a rubato intertwining intro, then spotlights tense cluster voicings supporting a female soloist throughout. With imaginative reharmonizations, yet good voice leading, this chart is extremely effective and accessible. 'If You Wanna Fly' is an Al Jarreau-style showcase for a strong tenor-baritone soloist. This up-tempo samba features hot choral backgrounds throughout doing horn section licks, an a cappella vocal/percussion break in the middle and some quick unison passages with choir and soloist. 'Not Like This' is another exquisite ballad made popular by Al Jarreau. Contemporary harmonies and recorded by Voice Trek for their CD 'At Last.' Written by Bobby McFerrin and featured on his first album, 'Jubilee' is full of energy and fun. This arrangement is a cappella, with the bass singer doing an instrumental-like bass line throughout. It begins as a samba, goes to swing for a vocal improvisation solo and an ensemble 'soli' section, then back to the samba. The recording by Phil Mattson and the P.M. Singers (Jubilee album) features vocal percussion throughout, emulating a true drum part. If you have an experienced group and you're looking for a showcase piece to feature a talented bass singer and vocal percussionist, this arrangement is for you!

Review: The unique six-voice a cappella orchestration of 'Toccata and Fugue in D Minor' is used in order to fully capture the thick chord voicings of this piece. The swing section contains original melodies based on the already established Toccata theme and crescendos into a tenor and bass (vocal-drum) solo. The work concludes with the original finale of the classical fugue. Matt Falker's arrangement of 'A Time For Love' (originally written by Johnny Mandel)' is a beautiful a cappella ballad. The chart is written for SSATBB voices and features a male/female duet in the latter part of the piece. Issa Sorensen's arrangement of Bobby McFerrins 'Good Lovin' will bring the house down with its awesome groove. Not to be confused with the sensational A Cappella band with the same name, 'Rockapella' is an original a cappella piece with a slow, almost Baroque opening that builds into a high-intensity groove. Features soloist and doo-wop bass line for added energy. A lot of fun for audience and performers!

Review: 'I Hold Your Hand In Mine' is a hilarious novelty song by famed satirist/songwriter, Tom Lehrer, gets a pseudo-sophisticated arrangement here, resulting in a subtle but very witty comic effect! Great change-of-pace in a jazz vocal program! A few words can be changed if needed. "I Don't Know Why I Do' is a hot ballad of the 40's in block harmonies. The tempo is medium. Jeremy Landig's arrangement of 'Pure Imagination' is five parts and is inspired by the sound of the Real Group. "Crunch" chords and interesting turns of harmony abound, making this a real showoff piece. Set mostly in a rubato ballad style, it shifts dramatically and unexpectedly between keys in the first section. The bridge leads into a sublime soli section bringing the melody back in a slow swing reminiscent of Lil Darlin' but in 7/4! The bridge returns briefly (this time in a Take 6-influenced swing) before the arrangement winds to a close in the original ballad feel. Whitney Houston made Dolly Parton's 'I Will Always Love You' the longest running #1 hit in the country's history, and this arrangement is true to her legendary version: opening simply with the trademark soprano soloist alone, adding a rich pulsing texture after the first verse and building gradually to a chilling climax.

Songlist: I Don't Know Why (I Just Do), I Hold Your Hand In Mine, I Don't Know Why (I Just Do), Pure Imagination, I Will Always Love You

Review: Sing some cool arrangements of the National anthem! Beginning with a beautiful unison, Tsunenori 'Lee' Abe's arrangement of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' goes into rich harmony without going too far away from the original. Mark Burnell's 'Star Spangled Banner' is an adventurous a cappella version as performed by Cooler by the Lake for the Chicago Bulls and White Sox. Kerry Marsh's 'Star Spangled Banner' uses some modal re-harmonization, some slight meter shifts and has a rousing finish, with some surprises. This chart sounds harder to sing than it is, as the voice leading is very logical and smooth but the chords are wonderful. Jason Heald's 'The Star-Spangled Banner' is a swinging version of the true "old standard". This is a very rhythmic a cappella SATB arrangement with a strong gospel feel. The chart opens with a soprano solo and concludes with bold sophisticated harmonies. A terrific opener or closer for any concert or event! America The Beautiful, by Mike Dana is a heartfelt arrangement set in a contemporary harmonic framework, and features brief solos for a soulful tenor, and after a modulation for the second verse, alto.
