Do You Hear What I Hear?

Music by Noel Regney

"Do You Hear What I Hear?" is a song written in October 1962, with lyrics by Noël Regney and music by Gloria Shayne. The pair, married at the time, wrote it as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis.[2] Regney had been invited by a record producer to write a Christmas song, but he was hesitant due to the commercialism of Christmas.[3] It has sold tens of millions of copies and has been covered by hundreds of artists.

Face : I Hear the Bells : 1 CD

Face : I Hear the Bells    Out of Print

Of course you know Face's record, placing 2nd at both the 2005 and 2007 Harmony Sweeps Finals, and making the Finals in 2008's The Sing-Off, its first smash year. Well, we hold in our hands "I Hear the Bells," this elite Denver, CO-based all-male sextet's freshly-released first Christmas album, and it's wonderful! There are nine finely-crafted tunes here, the tone is set with the title tune, an original by Face tenor Stephen Ross, a rich, complex, rhythmic anthem with depth and power; another original, "If I Think," by Face baritone Ben Lunstad, a deeply touching hymn to peace and personal change with hypnotic African rhythms, which asks and answers a very important question: "Am I a child of this world, can I change my ways?;" a surprising medley that seamlessly blends "We Three Kings" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Lunstad & Ross also lend marvelous arrangements that transform "Do You Hear What I Hear," "O Holy Night," "Little Drummer Boy," "Silent Night/The River Runs Slow" and "O Come, O Come Emmanuel/On the Turning Away" medleys, and an incongruously juicy manic, live rendition of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." Each of these cuts is very special, "I Hear the Bells" needs to be savored a number of times to fully appreciate them. The members of Face, reflecting on their 10 years together: "each of us is humbled. A magic was created that we still can't explain-we simply enjoy it and nurture it." We can only add, "one of the best Christmas albums we have heard!"

The Gas House Gang : Some Children See Him... : 1 CD

The Gas House Gang : Some Children See Him...    Out of Print

TWO YEARS IN THE MAKING!!! Perfection achieved!! Enough hyperbole already, you think to yourself? Not a chance...where's the thesaurus. Ok, we'll rein in our enthusiasm and resort to merely telling you about a Christmas album sung by one of the greatest barbershop quartets of our time. On this recording we listen to a quartet who achieves the tightest harmonies humanly possible apply those talents to traditional Christmas music. It's funny but as they aren't specifically singing barbershop chording, it is only occasionally that we remember just what tradition this fabulous singing springs from. Touches of jazz, elements of gospel reverence, and moments of almost operatic virtuosity abound throughout and all come together with vocal percussionist Jeff Thatcher of Rockapella adding his talents on "Go Tell It On the Mountain." We were also struck momentarily speechless when we found that, for the first time in quite a while, we actually enjoyed "The Little Drummer Boy" once more. The Gang rescues that song from the Christmas cul-de-sac of fruit-cake jokes with a beautiful rendition. What a tenor lead! You'll hear a fabulous Gregorianesque intro to "O Come Emanuel" which sounds as though it is emerging from a heavenly cathedral. The song list meanders through all of the Christmas spirit to arrive at the title track, "Some Children See Him." This is a wonderful message on which to leave, each child who sees Christ, sees Him in their own image...

Songlist: Caroling, Caroling, The Little Drummer Boy, Merry Christmas, Darling, Mary, Did You Know?, Pat-A-Pan, O Come Emmanuel, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Carol Of The Bells, White Christmas, Do You Hear What I Hear?, Go Tell It To The Mountain, Some Children See Him, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas

The Haven Quartet : An Acappella Christmas

The Haven Quartet's a cappella Christmas includes Bach's 'Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring,' 'Silent Night,' 'Go Tell It On The Mountain' and the 'Wexford Carol,' among others. In other words, whether an Irish traditional, American spiritual or Alfred Burt carol, the common thread is the versatility of this Contemporary Christian group. 'Mary, Did You Know' is revitalized, with a soulful lead by Randy Crenshaw, transforming it into an emotional pop ballad; the resonant 'Noel! Noel!', augmented by a refrain played on recorder, and a lively renaissance country-dance rhythm, is joyful and festive. Each Haven member's voice possesses an attractive brilliance of tone, and the four voices together have an exceptional depth.

Home Free : Full Of Cheer bestseller

One of our favorite winners of Season 4 of NBC's hit, The Sing-Off, based of course on our own Harmony Sweepstakes, bring us a country-flavored, harmony-rich smorgasbord of Christmas songs. "Full of Cheer" is exactly that, ten beautifully arranged by group members Adam and Chris Rupp, Tim Foust and Ben Bram. The harmonies here are as delicious as the ones that wowed the delighted Sing-Off judges, and are especially sweet on traditional favorites "White Christmas (featuring wonderful faux harmonica and pedal steel)," "O' Holy Night," "I'll Be Home for Christmas," "Baby, It's Cold Outside," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and "Silent Night," featuring guest vocalist Taylor Davis. We also loved Jimmy Melton, Anthony Mobley and Danielle Neal's funny and nostalgic "Hairy Christmas," the hilarious country classic "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" and the manic, funny title tune, where the guys celebrate that "my baby left me full of cheer!" Of the many things we love about Home Free is how much fun they have singing, their sound is rich and effortless, and their arrangements tight and sweet. Your friends and family, country fans or not, will love "Full of Cheer!"

Libera : Christmas Carols With Libera : 1 CD : 5030559108921 : IVIH89.2

Libera : Christmas Carols With Libera

Boys from South London with 65 million views on YouTube make up the choral group Libera and are normal kids aged 7 to 16 years. The music they produce is truly extraordinary. In addition to their annual tour to America, Libera appearances include The Today Show, Tonight Show, PBS, NBC, Kennedy Center Honors, Yankee Stadium Papal Mass and many more. Their new album 'Christmas Carols With Libera' is available on CD plus digital formats. Taking on the mellow and the more upbeat songs in this collection, the boys of Libera had great fun. The likes of 'Ding Dong Merrily On High' require real precision, as well as purity. Many of the tracks were recorded during a group 'retreat' to a rehearsal space in an old school, this allowed a true live feel to the process. The boy who took the lead vocal on 'The Snowman' had just turned 9 years old, whilst the introductions to the French 'Noel Nouvelet' and the Irish 'Wexford Carol' are both handled by native French and Gaelic speakers, Libera is as polyglot as ever. m-pact : Carol Commission : 1 CD

m-pact : Carol Commission    onsale

The Seattle quintet m-pact is just one of the best - and hippest - contemporary groups on the scene today. With unerring musical discernment, they drafted some of the most savvy arrangers to collaborate with them on "A Carol Commission": Randy Crenshaw, Michelle Weir, Yumiko Matsuoka-Young, Morgan Ames, Cedric Dent (of Take 6) et cetera. This marriage of technique and talent has propagated a fusion sound: the harmonic nucleus of jazz, but with so much more. Of the six tracks available for preview at presstime, the standouts are the "Little Drummer Boy," arranged by m-pact's own Matthew Selby; marked with vocal percussion, it has a retro seventies funk feel, a feel associated with the seventh and major/minor third of the blues pentatonic scale, which can be readily heard in the Motown-influenced bass line. "Caroling, Caroling," arranged by Randy Crenshaw, toys with meter amongst the parts, moving in and out of straight time and varying the rhythmic accents in unexpected places, like the handclap on the four, not the one of the beat. "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy" is incredible: a hip-hop jazz interpretation of this classical standard. "A Carol Commission" is an audacious project of most challenging musical caliber!

Songlist: Caroling, Caroling, Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy, Christmas Time Is Here, Little Drummer Boy, Jingle Bells, Snowfall, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Do You Hear What I Hear?, De King Is Born Today, As December Fades Away, Away In A Manger

Melodeers : It's a Wrap : 1 CD : Jim Arns

Melodeers : It's a Wrap

Since their formation in 1960, the Melodeers, a 125-member Sweet Adelines Chorus, have won the International Championship twice in succession (1997, 1998). Their energetic and vivacious style must also be credited to their redoubtable director, Jim Arns, who also wrote some of the arrangements. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" offers every imaginable variation (echo, contrast motion, swipes, modulation) of the familiar refrain, and sets up the grand finale with a turnaround, pushing the phrasing to make room for a zestful seventh chord and another key change. "Psalm 98/Shalom" begins on a long open note, gradually converging to the dominant; the subsequent section is a rapid fire allegro, broken by a repetitive adagio two-part interlude. Sound unconventional? It is. "Silent Night," "The Christmas Song" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" are among the many traditionals. The Chorus lets loose on "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer."

Songlist: Jingle Bell Rock, Silent Night, The Christmas Song, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer/ Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer Medley, Coventry Carol, A Holly Jolly Christmas, Do You hear What I Hear?, Carol Of The Bells, Psalm 98/ Shalom, The Christmas Song, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Christmas Chopstix, Jingle Bells, Hallelujah Chorus
