7th Element : 7th Element : 1 CD

7th Element : 7th Element

Here are six Christian men from Orlando, Florida, whose God, the '7th Element,' has called them to minister to others, to reach peoples' hearts with a positive message in music. David 'Dee' Glover, Marc Dwyer, Darren Greene, Garth, Curt and Kevin perform their mission well. The cover of the liner notes sets the tone: we see only the eyes of the six men, placing the importance on their Lord and the music that comes through them. From the first song, the spiritual 'Ride the Chariot' it's clear as they break into a stunning harmonic jazz chord that 7th Element is something very special. 13 songs, several written and all arranged by group members, with very cool with little spoken set pieces like 'WORL' where the group explains their name to a radio DJ, and 'Master's Piece Theatre,' a funny and unexpected little gem. We have 'Ship of Zion,' 'Everything That's Beautiful,' 'I'll Be Your Friend,' 'Realize,' Come Down,' 'Lift Every Voice,' 'Redeemed,' 'We Give You All the Praise,' 'Our Prayer' and very appropriate bonus track, the 'Star-Spangled Banner.' Some of the songs are accompanied with drums and sometimes violins and orchestra. Beautiful, soaring falsetto voices and cutting edge arrangements make 'Vol. 1' as impressive and stunning a first CD as Naturally Seven's 'Non-Fiction.'

Songlist: Ride The Chariot, Worl, Ship of Zion, Everything That's Beautiful, I'll Be Your Friend, Realize, Calm Down, The Race, Master's Piece Theater, Lift Every Voice, Redeemed, We Give You All The Praise, Our Prayer, Star Spangled Banner

Durant : Ride : 1 CD

Durant : Ride

There are quite a few "family dynasties" in the a cappella world, most notably in barbershop, but here we have a very auspicious beginning of perhaps another. Keith Lancaster has built a very solid reputation as director of the various groups under the Acappella Ministries banner and now three of his children Melissa Lancaster, Kim Lancaster and Anthony Lancaster along with three others have formed the mixed group Durant. The children grew up on the road and in the studio with their father and have individually produced and performed on an impressive amount of recordings. This collection of praise and inspirational songs clearly demonstrates that musical talent can be genetic and fans of contemporary Christian music are sure to find this recording a real treat.

Songlist: Oh How Great, When I'm Down, People Get Ready, The River Medley, His Righteousness, As the Deer, He Looked Beyond, Thank You, Without Love, Ride the Chariot, Bonus Track

Nightlife : Blues In The Night : 1 CD

Nightlife : Blues In The Night

Though not generally identified with blues, in fact barbershop does have something in common with jazz and blues alike - they are all distinctly American musical forms. As David Wright says in his liner notes describing the quartet (he also arranged four songs), "the richness of their blend evoked the texture of blues and gospel..." These 1996 gold medalists (and members of the heralded Masters of Harmony Chorus), are indeed staking out their own forty acres of barbershop territory. Sublime adaptations of the title track, "How High The Moon," "Satin Doll," "Steal Away" and "Baby It's Cold Outside" are just some of the wonderful surprises in store. While staying true to the core structure of barbershop, these arrangements are festooned with borrowed inflections from other styles, and gently evoke the romance of days gone by!

Songlist: How High The Moon, Mobile, Satin Doll, My Funny Valentine, Slap That Bass, Steal Away, When I Lift Up My Head, Blues In The Night, Ride The Chariot, London By Night, Baby, It's Cold Outside, Today, Watch What Happens, Who Will Buy?, One Moment in Time

No Better Cause : Sanctuary : 1 CD

No Better Cause : Sanctuary

No Better Cause is an award-winning pop/soul/funk vocal band from Lincoln, Nebraska. These 5 young men use nothing but their voices to create a full, rich sound on this collection of Gospel, Spirituals and Contemporary Christian tunes. NBC's strong vocal percussion and cutting-edge arrangements are clear on cuts like "Ride The Chariot," "Shut De Do," very funky takes on the spiritual "Wade in the Water" and "Joshua Fit The Battle of Jericho," "Awesome God," the finger-popping "Oh Happy Day," "Immeasurable," "Shine Down," and "Goin' Up A Yonder." Their soulful side comes through equally strongly on "People Get Ready," the title tune, the inspirational hymn "It is Well With My Soul," "I Want Jesus to Walk With Me" and a beautifully arranged "Doxology." We like No Better Cause's energy, sweet harmonies and their spirited mix of driving, rhythmic pieces with slower, soulful hymns. Washington Men's Camerata : Brothers Sing On!

The ancient art of men's choral singing began early in the history of western music. From its roots in Jewish liturgical chant and the monastic chants of the early Christian church, through groups of troubadours in Medieval France and the male singing societies of nineteenth-century England and Germany, the male chorus has a rich and varied history, influenced by many of the world's most important cultures and religions. In modern times, male chorus traditions are carried on by collegiate and community choruses in dozens of countries around the world. With this program, the Washington Men's Camerata begins a series of recordings of some of the timeless gems of our repertoire, with the hope that this lasting testament to the power of men's voices raised in song will serve to inspire future generations of singers.

Fisk Jubilee Singers : Sacred Journey : 1 CD & 1 DVD : Paul T. Kwami : 829569804528 : SUMG8045.2

Fisk Jubilee Singers : Sacred Journey

Nashville, TN's Fisk University's legendary Jubilee Singers, founded by school treasurer and music lover George White, led his group of former slaves on a tour that followed the Civil War's Underground Railroad in an effort to save the school, originally called the Fisk Free Colored School, from financial ruin. The group finally found some success in Ohio, then created a sensation with their spiritual "secret slave songs" in New York City, beginning a tour of Britain and Europe that saved the school and built beautiful new campus buildings. "Sacred Journey" is a 2-disk live CD recorded on the group's 2006-7 trip to Ghana, Africa, where they sang in the courtyard of notorious Elmina Castle, a key link in the slave trade. Robert Swope said of the concert, "This ensemble, through the sheer love of its' performance, brought the glory of His forgiveness to the walls of Elmina Castle and allowed His grace to forgive what, for hundreds of years, was a place torn by human degradation." Twelve powerful songs, recorded live and without overdub or re-record in any way: "I Thank You, Jesus," "Our Father," "Didn't My Lord," "Kekeli Tso Kekili Me," "We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace," "Here is On," "My Soul's Been Anchored in the Lord," "An' I Cry," "Mister Banjo," "Sweet Home," "Mawu nye lolo" and "Ride the Chariot." Don't miss this remarkable, profound concert, that brought joy and healing light to the heart of darkness!
