Lingonberries

The Lingonberries are a bilingual a cappella quartet based in Ottawa. That's bilingual as in English and Swedish. All four members are originally from Sweden. Three of them moved to Canada fairly recently, only Helene moved from Sweden as a child and grew up in Canada. The group performs regularly in Ottawa. You might have seen them at local venues, including National Arts Centre 4th Stage, Rasputin¹s and The Elbow Room. The Lingonberries recently performed at the Museum of Civilization as part of the successful exhibit "Viking: The North Atlantic Saga". They've also been featured on CBC TV Canada Now, Breakfast Television, NewRO News At 11, CJOH News At 6, CBC Radio's "Ottawa Morning", Rogers Television's "Daytime", The Ottawa Citizen and in the Ottawa Sun. In addition to their public appearances, The Lingonberries often entertain at private parties and functions.

While the group's repertoire is centered around traditional Swedish folk songs, The Lingonberries have recently added a number of English songs to their extensive repertoire. For instance, their Christmas program includes several songs traditionally sung both in Sweden and North America. It's not uncommon for the group to perform the first verse in English only to finish it off in Swedish, or vice versa. The group took its name from the Swedish word "lingon", a very sweet and tasty berry commonly found in most areas of Sweden.

The Lingonberries are a bilingual (English and Swedish) three-women/one man a cappella quartet based in Ottawa, Canada. Their repertoire centers around traditional Swedish folk songs, although three of the four recently moved to Canada from Sweden and audiences are hearing more and more English lyrics lately. There are 12 songs, all with Swedish titles, nice harmonies and the women's pure, sweet voices soar over the anchoring bass of the man. A brief paragraph in English follows each selection, giving us the meaning of each song. Enjoyable and celebratory choral music by some of our talented friends in the north country.

Swedish 3-woman, 1-man folk quartet The Lingonberries bring us their second sweet, melodic CD, "Swedish Christmas Songs." Twelve songs, (which has always seemed to us the best number for a Christmas CD) all sung in Swedish. But listening to "Jul, Jul" we realized that the language difference means very little here. There are a couple of carols we know, "Det Ar En Ros Utsprungen" (the traditional German carol "Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming") and "Stilla Natt/Silent Night." Listening to "Nar Det Lider Mot Jul," "Hosianna," ""Goder Afton," "Lusse Lella," "Nu Tandas Tusen Juleljus" or "Bereden Vag For Herran"--for the first time out of context, we would still know from the phrasing, and the feeling that comes through the singers that they are Christmas songs.
