Estelle Liebling : Vocal Course - Soprano

Review: This book consists of three parts: PART I describes the vocal mechanism and its functions briefly and in simple non-technical language. A general knowledge of the instrument often helps the student to clarify a question of tone production. PART II, forming the major portion of the book, consists of basic, fundamental vocalises carefully selected to develop the specific voices for which the book is written. PART III presents the important elements of diction in the five languages most commonly used in singing: English, Italian, French, German and Spanish.

Songlist: PART I, The Breath System, The Phonating System, The Resonating System, The Articulating System, General Remarks, PART II, Fundamental Exercises, The Turn, The Soprano Registers, Pianissimo Studies, Staccato Studies, Trill Studies, Messa Di Voce, Style , Special Problems, PART III, English, Foreign Language Diction, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Glossary of Musical Terms, Songs for Sopranos, Recordings of Great Singers

Kirby Shaw : Kirby Shaw's Soul Clinic

Review: Kirby keeps busy writing arrangements for Hal Leonard. Somehow, he still finds time to sing and tour with the jazz quartet, Just 4 Kicks, and do side projects, like this video, produced under the auspices of the newly inaugurated A Cappella Foundation. His delightful presence is a great complement to his years of experience as a music educator, and helps the medicine of knowledge go down as sweet as sugar. With an introduction reflecting back to his youth listening to the radio, Kirby vividly illustrates the difference between the white music he first heard, and the black radio he then fell in love with: soul! Along with the studio audience, who demonstrate each example, we are shown how to "mess with the melody," using vocal ornaments such as the appoggiatura, upper and lower neighbor et cetera. In that context, Kirby also imparts information about chord structure, picking out notes within a chord and commenting on their function, right on the fly. All along he reassures us that taking risks is what it's all about. Sixty minutes of fun!

Songlist: Giving Yourself Permission, Vocal Ornamentation, Anticipation, Lower Neighbor, Upper neighbor, Appoggiatura, Passing Tones... and much, much more!, Developing your musical point of view (you are unique), Lyrics are your friend, Word Repetition, Word Painting, Listening Skills... be a detective!

Ward Swingle : Swingle Singing

Review: Ward Swingle was the product of an unusually liberal musical education. In his hometown, Mobile, Alabama, he grew up with the sound of jazz and played in one of the great Big Bands before finishing high school. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Cincinnati Conservatory and studied piano with the celebrated Walter Gieseking in postwar France. In Paris in the sixties he was a founding member of the fabled Double Six of Paris, then took to the scat singing idea and applied it to the works of Bach, hence The Swingle Singers ("The Mod Squad of Baroque Music"), whose early recordings won five Grammies. In this video Ward Swingle shares his world-renowned 'Swingle Singing' methods by conducting an a cappella master class with eight talented singers from the San Francisco Bay Area. With his instruction, guidance and example they learn and perform four of his arrangements, giving the at-home viewer practice and insight into these techniques -- techniques that have made Ward one of the most influential figures in vocal music in the Twentieth Century.

Songlist: Breathing, Scat Syllables, Mike Techniques, Unisons, Syncopation, High Notes and Low Notes, Phrasing, Pronunciation, Special Effects

Sam West : Vocal Workout

Review: First released on video, this programme was the first of its kind to have been produced in the UK, and is still a 'best seller' in music stores and mail order companies in the UK, and Europe. Sam West, with the aid of two singers, Candi McKenzie, and Bridget Lynch-Blosse, explains and demonstrates various singing techniques, i.e. Breath Control, Range, Resonance, Vibrato, Aural (ear) training, plus more. In the 'workout' section, ten different exercises are presented, each going through various keys - thus accommodating both low and also high voiced singers. Shirlee Emmons : Researching The Song

Review: Singers are faced with a unique challenge among musicians: they must express not just the music, but the lyrics too. To effectively communicate the meaning behind these words, singers must understand the many references embedded in the vast international repertoire of great art songs. They must deal with the meaning of the lyrics, frequently in a language not their own and of a culture unfamiliar to them. From Zelter and Schubert to Rorem and Musto, Researching the Song serves as an invaluable guide for performers, teachers, and enthusiasts to the art song repertoire. Its more than 2,000 carefully researched entries supply information on most of the mythological, historical, geographical, and literary references contained in western art song. The authors explain the meaning of less familiar literary terms, figures, and authors referenced in song while placing songs in the context of larger literary sources. Readers will find entries dealing with art songs from the German, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, South American, Greek, Finnish, Scandinavian, and both American and British English repertoires. Sources, narratives, and explanations of major song cycles are also given. Organized alphabetically, the lexicon includes brief biographies of poets, lists of composers who set each poet's work, bibliographic materials, and brief synopses of major works from which song texts were taken, including the plots of all Restoration theater works containing Purcell's vocal music. The more performers know and understand the literary elements of a song, the richer their communication will be. Researching the Song is a vital aid for singers and teachers in interpreting art songs and building song recital programs.

Gitika Partington : Sing Pop A Cappella Vol 2

Review: A unique guide to teaching unaccompanied singing! Gitika Partington's a cappella arrangements are used by youth and community choirs around the world. Gitika believes in the sensational power of group singing, bringing people together to express joy and celebration through song. Not being able to read music is no obstacle and Gitika's tips and the original arrangements included here demonstrate just how rewarding and inclusive teaching a cappella by ear and gesture can be! Gitika Partington is a singer/songwriter, vocal arranger, teacher and choral director. She has an MA in choral education and holds many other musical qualifications. She runs regular 'popular and world style' singing workshops as well as national training sessions for adults and children. In addition she runs three adult community choirs where all the music is learned by ear and is mostly self arranged. One of Gitika's major loves is a cappella vocal arranging, which she does for her three choirs and her vocal workshops. Her arrangements are used by youth and community choirs across the UK and internationally. This book contains the first of many of her arrangements she would like to share even more widely.

P. Mario Marafioti : Caruso's Method of Voice Production - The Scientific Culture of the Voice

Review: This historic volume, dedicated to the great tenor and published shortly after his death, explains clearly and scientifically how Caruso achieved his phenomenal voice production. Written by a noted laryngologist and student of voice who devoted much of his career to working with Caruso and other singers, the book proposes a method of voice culture based on well-defined physiological laws. According to Dr. Marafioti, there is only one right way to sing - a method based on the scientific principles of voice culture. Although Caruso instinctively sang that way, the methods can be learned by any singer.

Songlist: Enrico Caruso, the Master of Natural Singing, The Aim of This Book, Who Will Read This Book?, The Decadence of the Art of Singing and Its Causes; Its Restoration, The Voice in Its Natural Production: New Principles on the Mechanism of Voice Production, Some Suggestions for a Radical Reform in Voice Culture, The Human Voice in Its Relationship to Science, Brief Outline of the Anatomy of the Vocal Organs, Seven Principles of Singing, Caruso's Method of Singing as Explained by Himself, The Radical Reform of Voice Culture Through the Speaking Voice, The Voice in its Relationship to Music; the Importance of the Speaking Voice in Voice Culture, Who Should Teach Voice Culture and How, The Italian Vowls and Consonants as Fundamental Phonetic Elements for Voice Culture, The Articulation of the Italian Consonants; Speaking Exercises for a Correct Voice Production, Vocal Exercises of the Scientific Culture, A Word from a Laryngologist to Singers

Lois Alba : Vocal Rescue - Rediscover the Beauty, Power & Freedom in Your Singing

Review: Achieving a successful singing career, especially in opera, can seem almost impossible to many singers because of fear of high notes, lack of projection, and confusion on how to express the music unhampered by technical preoccupation. Master Teacher and accomplished opera singer Lois Alba is aware of these pitfalls. She knows the best teaching involves an acute sense of the art form based on sound, intuition and imagery. The focus comes from the mind. It is interpreted through the ear and the body. When the body and mind come together harmoniously the result is beautiful sound. In this clear and legible guide, Lois Alba shares her formidable experience, voice training insight, and philosophical wisdom about the creative nature of singing. She works to de-program the singer as to the many myths about singing recurring themes that flood vocal studios and ultimately damage voices. Vocal Rescue is an amalgamation of many precepts from a large library of rare treatises and the concepts outlined come from the fine art of vocal mastery known as bel canto. The text provides a seven step system that demystifies the secrets to beautiful singing, and promises to take all singers to a new level of technical proficiency and expression. Recorded illustrations on CD/DVD demonstrate the vocal principles with lessons and vocalises for singers in all voice ranges to follow.

Giovanni Battista Lamperti : Vocal Wisdom

Review: 2010 Reprint of 1931 Edition. Giovanni Battista Lamperti (1839 -1910) was an Italian singing teacher and son of the singing teacher Francesco Lamperti. He is source for Vocal Wisdom: Maxims of Giovanni Battista Lamperti (1931). His preferred teaching arrangement was having three or four students present at each lesson: each would get their turn while the others observed and learned thereby. He was said to be a strict, exacting instructor not given to flattery, but who enthusiastically praised his students upon exceptional achievement. Many of Giovanni's students became international opera stars including Irene Abendroth, Marcella Sembrich, Ernestine Schumann-Heink, Paul Bulss, Roberto Stagno, David Bispham and Franz Nachbaur. The Technics of Bel Canto is the only book (other than the maxims recalled and published posthumously by his pupil William E. Brown) that Giovanni ever wrote on his method.

Garyth Nair : Craft of Singing

Review: A new text with two principal aims: to provide a foundation of anatomical, physiological, acoustical and medical knowledge for students in the belief that one must know how something works before one can alter or repair it, and also to carefully structure the learning of the foundational voice skills necessary for the development of each student's technique beyond the length of a single course. Borrowing from Voice Science but staying firmly centered in the studio or classroom, the text helps the reader with a raw vocal ability understand the function and care of their vocal instrument. In the second part, the book begins a carefully graduated approach in building good singing habits. Three paradigm songs, one in Italian, one in English and one in German, are employed to help the reader practice and guage personal progress.
