Ferdinand Sieber : Ten Easy Vocalises and Solfeggios

Review: The Sieber Vocalises: It is important to know why Sieber is so good for the voice. He was a Viennese, Italian-trained voice teacher who knew the importance of vowel alteration and its role in keeping the balance of the registers. The Sieber Vocalises are designed to balance the registers using 8 measure melodies based on the Italian syllables da, me, ni, po, to, la, be. The register balance is achieved in the ingenious way Sieber arranges the syllables. Again, his goal it to allow the space of the open vowels in the closed vowels, and the ring of the closed vowels in the open vowels. Lindquest called these vocalises the 'bridge between vocalizing and singing music'. In my 25 years of teaching, I have never found a singer that the Sieber Vocalises did not help tremendously. Franco Corelli : Voices of the Opera Series

Review: Franco Corelli (8 April 1921 - 29 October 2003) was an Italian tenor who had a major international opera career between 1951 and 1976. Associated in particular with the spinto and dramatic tenor roles of the Italian repertory, he was celebrated universally for his thrilling upper register. Dubbed the "Prince of tenors", Corelli possessed handsome features and a charismatic stage presence which endeared him to audiences. He had a long and fruitful partnership with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City between 1961-1975. He also appeared on the stages of most of the major opera houses in Europe and with opera companies throughout North America. As in the previous volumes in this series, 11 arias from Franco Corelli's signature tenor repertoire is presented with specific interpretive details noted, including melodic variants, breaths, fermatas, and all other nuances. Includes an artist biography, as well as an article about Corelli's unique artistry. In Italian and English.

Franz Abt : Practical Singing Tutor For All Voices

Review: This text-book was received with such marked favor by the foremost musicians and singing teachers of the day, and attained such popularity, that this new and thoroughly revised edition has become a standard. This method can also be used with the careful guidance of an experienced teacher. The preface contains a series of important theoretical and practical suggestions which have in all cases proved to be an admirable basis of instruction in singing, and are recognized as such by the most eminent authorities, like Lamperti, Garcia, Panseron, and Sieber, to whose opinions the author had also occasionally referred to for vocal instruction. A classic!

Franz Schubert : 100 Songs

Review: The most useful collection of Schubert songs available! Unlike international editions, these new songbooks contain only a few favorite songs from Die Schöne Müllerin and Die Wintereisse, rather than the rarely-used entire song cycles; this leaves room for many more wonderful individual songs not normally found in Schubert collections. As in the other volumes in The Vocal Library, each song features introductory notes including information about the composition, the song's biographical context in Schubert's life, early performances and comments about poets. The contents for the High Voice and Low Voice editions are almost the same: the High Voice volume uniquely includes Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (with removable clarinet part) and Auf dem Strom (with removable horn part); the Low Voice volume uniquely includes Das Abendrot and Romanze. The cover is adorned with a charming 1821 watercolor depicting Schubert and friends at a summer gathering in Atzenbrugg. All songs have been newly edited and researched based on the most current historical material available.

Songlist: Der Wanderer, Sehnsucht, An die Nachtigall, Abendstern, Abschied (Mayrhofer), Am Grabe Anselmos, Am See (Bruchmann), Am See (Mayrhofer), An den Mond (Goethe), An den Tod, An die Entfernte, An die Geliebte, An die Laute, An die Leier, An die Musik, An die Sonne, An Schwager Kronos, An Silvia, Auf dem Wasser zu singen, Auf der Bruck, Dass sie hier gewesen!, Der Musensohn, Der Neugierige, Der Zwerg, Die Allmacht, Die Forelle, Die junge Nonne, Die liebe Farbe, Die Liebe hat gelogen, Die Unterscheidung, Du bist die Ruh, Du liebst mich nicht, Ellens Gesang I (Raste Krieger), Ellens Gesang III (Ave Maria!), Erlafsee, Erster Verlust, Ganymed, Geheimes, Grenzen der Menschheit, Gretchen am Spinnrade, Gruppe aus dem Tartarus, Heliopolis I, Heliopolis II, Herbst, Hoffnung, Im Abendrot, Im Haine, Im Walde, Klaglied, Lachen und Weinen, Lied der Mignon (So lasst mich scheinen), Lied der Mignon (Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt), Litanei, Meeres Stille, Memnon, Mignons Gesang (Kennst du das Land?), Erlkönig, An den Mond (Hölty), Der Alpenjäger, Der Jüngling an der Quelle, Der König in Thule, Der Tod und das Mädchen, Die böse Farbe, Die Männer sind méchant!, Ellens Gesang II (Jäger, ruhe von der Jagd!), Frühlingsglaube, Heidenröslein, Im Frühling, Jägers Abendlied, Liebe schwärmt auf allen Wegen, Lied der Mignon (HeiB mich nicht reden), Nacht und Träume, Nachtstück, Nachtviolen, Rastlose Liebe, Schäfers Klagelied, Liebesbotschaft, Kriegers Ahnung, Frühlingssehnsucht, Ständchen (Rellstab), Aufenthalt, In der Ferne, Abschied (Rellstab), Der Atlas, Ihr Bild, Das Fischermädchen, Die Stadt, Am Meer, Der Doppelgänger, Die Taubenpost, Sei mir gegrüBt, Seligkeit, Ständchen (Shakespeare), Suleika I, Verklärung, Wandrers Nachtlied I, Wandrers Nachtlied II, Wohin?, Auf dem Strom, Der Hirt auf dem Felsen

Franz Schubert : 100 Songs

Review: A major new edition, newly researched, with new music engravings, historical notes on each song, a poet index and line by line translations for study. Unlike other Schubert editions, the complete cycles Die Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin are not included, since in their entirety they are not useful to most singers. (Schwanengesang is included in its entirety.) This leaves room for many more wonderful individual songs. The contents for the High Voice and Low Voice editions are almost the same. G. Schirmer Opera Anthology : Coloratura Arias for Soprano

Review: An excellent volume of coloratura arias has been added to the G. Schirmer Opera Anthology series. With 30 arias in English, Italian, German, French and Russian, this is the largest collection of coloratura operatic excerpts ever published. Because of the nature of the material, tradition-based performance suggestions are liberally found throughout the volume. For instance, you will find standard vocal variations for the "Doll Song" from The Tales of Hoffmann included in the edition, along with the original vocal line. Like the other volumes in the ground-breaking series, there are historical and plot notes about each aria, new engravings, and new translations for study.

G. Schirmer Opera Anthology : Diction Coach - Arias for Baritone

Review: Diction lessons on each aria in the series recorded by top language coaches from the Metropolitan Opera and the Juilliard School plus International Phonetic Alphabet and word for word translations. With these book/CD packages that match the standard aria collections edited by Robert L. Larsen, any singer anywhere has access to the best diction coaching available at a very affordable price. Each aria is recorded twice. In the first version the coach recites the text as an actor would speak it, showing flow of the language and the mood. The second version is a slow, deliberate lesson, allowing time for the student to repeat each line. These experienced language coaches adapt the "R" in German and French in the slow versions for singers. They also are very sensitive to liaisons between word sounds in the musical settings. The book includes International Phonetic Alphabet for each aria and word for word translations. The native speaking professional diction coaches from the Metropolitan Opera and the Juilliard School are: Corradina Caporello for Italian, Pierre Vallet for French, Irene Spiegelman for German, Kathryn LaBouff for English, Yveta Synek Graff for Czech, and Gina Levinson for Russian. Giovanni Lamperti : 30 Preparatory Vocalises

Review: Giovanni Battista Lamperti was a highly-regarded Italian singing teacher who was considered to one of the best of his era. Many of Giovanni's students became international opera stars. These vocalises are designed to prepare the soprano voice for performance. "I recommend the daily use of these Exercises, particularly to Soprano and Mezzo-soprano singing a melodramatic repertory; because exercises of this kind promote length of respiration, and delay the deterioration and undue vibration (tremolo) of the voice. Beginners should confine themselves to a regularly limited range, so as not to weaken the medium of the voice and should extend their compass according to individual progress and development." - G.B. Giuseppe Concone : 15 Vocalises for Sopranos or Mezzo-Sopranos

Review: Giuseppe Concone, the famous Italian Master of Singing and Pianoforte, was born in Turin in the year 1810. His musical education was had in Turin, where he continued to live until he met with discouragement on the failure of his first opera, 'Un episodio di San Michel,' which was performed in 1836. In 1837 he moved to Paris, where he became famous as a teacher of the piano forte, singing, the theory of music and composition. While resident in Paris, Concone became very popular as a composer of Romanzas, Arias and Duettini; but his chief title to fame rests on a Series of Solfeggi which have a world-wide reputation and are everywhere in use - they are eminently practical and melodious, with a flowing accompaniment. Here is a collection of excellent exercises for sopranos.

The purpose of these lessons, in the author's own words, are 'to place and fix the voice accurately,' and 'to develop taste while singing broad, elegant and rhythmical melodies.'
