Pacific Edge Voices

Director: Dr. Lynne Morrow

Pacific Edge Voices

Mixed Choral 11 Ensemble from Berkeley, CA, United States.

Founded in 1980 by Artistic Director Richard Grant, the Pacific Mozart Ensemble (PME) delivers passionate, expert and engaging choral performances of music from Brahms to Brubeck to the Beach Boys. During its time, PME has grown to fill an important role in the cultural life of the San Francisco Bay Area, presenting courageous and innovative programs of many works that have never been performed in concert settings. In 2005, the group's 25th anniversary season, PME named Dr. Lynne Morrow, one of the Bay Area's leading musical figures, as the group's Music Director.

PME is perhaps best known for its collaborations with contemporary composers and artists, including John Adams, Dave Brubeck, David Lang, Meredith Monk, The American Bach Soloists, Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, The Oakland East Bay Symphony, and many others. PME was nominated for a "Best Choral Performance" Grammy Award in 2006 for the Harmonia Mundi recording of Bernstein's Mass with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester under the direction of Kent Nagano.

PME made its Carnegie Hall debut in November 2005, representing choral music for Meredith Monk's 40th Anniversary Celebration; selections of those performances were broadcast on WNYC radio. In 2006, members of PME appeared in local concerts by "indie" rocker Sufjan Stevens and avant garde composer and musician John Zorn.

PME was a featured performer at the 2007 Green Center Festival at Sonoma State University, presenting its multimedia concert program "A Story of Freedom: An Evening of Spirituals." In 2008, PME made guest appearances with Sweet Honey in the Rock, and with the Napa Valley Symphony. PME received a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts to record the choral music of Dave Brubeck. The ensemble has made three European tours and numerous recordings.

PME annually presents a season of three concert programs in various locations around the Bay Area; these concerts often include collaborations with other music institutions. The 2009-10 season includes the West Coast premiere of David Lang's The Little Match Girl Passion, winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Music. PME closes each season with its highly popular A Cappella Jazz & Pop concerts, which showcase members of the choir in small and large groups performing sophisticated, original arrangements of a wide variety of musical styles.

PME's Board members (2009-2010 fiscal year) are: Steve Bicknese, President; Dale Engle, Vice-President; Lark Coryell, Eric Freeman, Antonia Van Becker, Members at Large.

Pacific Mozart Ensemble : A Cappella Jazz & Pop

Review: The P.M.E. is one of the San Francisco Bay Areas most versatile and innovative choruses. The repertoire stretches from Mozart to Monk (Meredith). Each year members arrange and perform immensely popular jazz and pop concerts. On this recording which has arrangements of 20 songs, various members form quintets and sextets to allow individual singers greater individual expression. It begins with "Doodlin'" and ends with "Canary In A Coal Mine." In between find yodeling, scats, a lullaby, Eric Clapton and more. You'll listen to this one over and over.

Songlist: Doodlin', Wonderful Tonight, Things We Said Today, Boy From New York City, 42nd Street, Cattle Call, Pretending To Care, Don't Let Your Heart Slip, Blues My Naughty Sweetie, 'Round Midnight, A Good Man Is Hard To Find, Sincerely, Mama, I Wanna Make Rhythm, Lullaby, It's All Right, You Know It's Wrong, The Love You Save, What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life, Four, Canary In A Coal Mine

Pacific Mozart Ensemble : Classics Live : 00 1 CD : Maurice Durufle

Pacific Mozart Ensemble : Classics Live    onsale

Review: Since its founding twenty years ago, Berkeley-based PME has grown to fill an important role in the cultural life of the Bay Area, presenting courageous and innovative programs of many works that have never been performed in concert settings. PME provides the opportunity for composers to collaborate with a professional chorus in performances of new or experimental work. In addition, PME stages live performances of works previously heard only on recordings. Founding director Richard Grant has directed the Ensemble in more than 200 concerts, and led the Ensemble on three European concert tours, presenting innovative programs from all periods and styles of music. Grant has has established a reputation for programming the current work of the most important contemporary composers, such as John Adams, Meredith Monk, David Lang and Philip Glass. But their repertoire also includes, of course, Christian sacred works by Mozart, Poulenc and Stravinsky. "Classics Live" focuses on this music. The first nine songs are a cappella, and this is a live recording. Barber's "Agnus Dei," "Ave Marias" by Biebl, Bruckner and Stravinski, Stravinski's "Pater Noster" and "Credo," Lotti's "Crucifixus," Durufle's "Tota Pulchra Es" and Poulenc's "Quatre Petites Prieres De Francois D'Assisse, No. 3." The last eight movements are parts of Durufle's moving "Requiem," accompanied by organ and cello. The soaring voices of this 64-strong mixed chorus take us to another time and space, a place of worship and angels. Truly beautiful.

Songlist: Agnus Dei , Ave Maria, Ave Maria , Pater Noster, Credo, Ave Maria, Crucifixus , Tota Pulchra Es, Quatre Petites De St. Francois d'Assise, Requiem , Introit & Kyrie, Domine Jesu, Sanctus, Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei , Lux aeterna, Linera me, In Paradisum

Pacific Mozart Ensemble : Bernstein's Mass : 00 2 SACDs : Lynne Morrow : Leonard Bernstein

Pacific Mozart Ensemble : Bernstein's Mass

Review: PME recorded Bernstein's Mass with Kent Nagano and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester in Berlin. The recording received a Grammy nomination in 2005 for Best Choral Performance. The work calls for a "Street Chorus" that is able to perform such American musical styles as jazz, blues and rock. Since PME has long been known for being able to do the crossover between "classical" and other forms, Nagano decided that for his recording PME had to be hired and brought to Berlin. Over forty singers went for a week of recording sessions and concerts. In addition to singing the choral parts, PME supplied twenty soloists. Also heard on the recording is the Rundfunkchor Berlin and the Staats- und Domchor Berlin, with whom we share the nomination. The Mass was commissioned in 1971 by Jacqueline Kennedy for the opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Ours is the first recording of the piece since the original was conducted by Bernstein.

Songlist: Antiphon: "Kyrie eleison", Hymn and Psalm: A simple song, Responsory: "Alleluia", Prefatory Prayers, Thrice - Triple Canon: Dominus vobiscum, In nomine Patris, Prayer for the Congregation, Epiphany, Confiteor, Trope: "I don't know", Trope: "Easy", Meditation No. 1, Gloria tibi, Gloria in excelsis, Trope: "Half of the People", Trope: "Thank you", Meditation No. 2, Epistle "The Word of Lord", Gospel-Sermon "God said", Credo in unum Deum, Trope: "Non Credo", Trope: "Hurry", World Without End, Trope: "I Believe in God", Meditation No. 3 (De profundis, part 1), Offertory (De profundis, part 2), "Our father...", Trope: "I Go On", Sanctus "Holy! Holy! Holy!...", Agnus Dei, Fraction "Things Get Broken", Pax: Communion "Secret Songs"
