Blue Cheese

The group Blue Cheese is, as far as we are aware, Utah's only 100% a cappella southern gospel quartet, and consists of three guys and a gal. Blue Cheese was formed in the fall of 2003 when two choir conductors from Brigham Young University got together to perform "Some Day" by Blue Highway. They searched among our musically talented friends until they felt they had formed the perfect bluegrass quartet. Their group continues to perform original arrangements of foot-stompin', soul-stirrin' music in the semiannual BYU A Cappella Jam and in venues along the Wasatch Front for crowds who know how to say AMEN! They took first place and were awarded judge‚s choice at the BYU Talent Showcase in 2006, have auditioned and performed in the last ten consecutive BYU A Cappella Jam concerts, and have opened shows for Vocal Point and Noteworthy.

OK, it's a funny name for a 3-man, 1-woman Bluegrass Gospel quartet, formed by 4 BYU students in 2003, but once we've heard these yummy harmonies and spirited tunes, we aren't likely to forget the name! From the color pictures scattered in the liner notes we see that these four are having a good time performing and spreading their ministry, dressing in blue jeans, non-matching shirts and t-shirts, and even in hillbilly hats and beards. The 15 songs, however, are as simple and powerful as any a cappella Bluegrass or Gospel we have ever heard. "Reaping in the Spirit," "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship," the title tune, "Death Shall Not Destroy My Comfort," the wonderful "Angel Band," "Jesus' Love is like a River," "Abide with Me," the traditional Christmas tunes "What Child is This," "Silent Night," the spiritual "Christmas Train," with lyrics by the group, and the traditional "We'll Soone Be Done" are Gospel favorites. Secular tunes like "Danny Boy," with guest artist Kristine Perry, "You are my Sunshine" and "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow" from the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou" are also excellent. Blue Cheese is strong, tasty stuff that takes us back to the beginnings of country music, that makes us want to tap our feet and sing along!

Three man, one woman a cappella Bluegrass a cappella quartet Blue Cheese was formed in the Fall of 2003 when two choir conductors from Brigham Young University got together to perform "Some Day" by Blue Highway. They searched among their musically talented friends until they had the perfect quartet, and the group continues to perform their foot-stomping', soul-stirring music in the semiannual BYU A Cappella Jam and in local venues, looking for crowds who know how to shout "Hallelujah!" There are 17 down-home Bluegrass Gospel cuts here:"Gospel Train," "John," "Fishers of Men," "Rise Up Lazarus," the lovely hymn "Amazing Grace," "Traveling Shoes," "Higher Power," "Go Rest High," "Some Day," "Hallelujah" and "Christmas in Dixie" are favorites, but every song here is a heartfelt winner. Sweet country harmonies, lyrics that alternately inspire and make us laugh—Blue Cheese has a powerful simplicity that we never tire of hearing. Great stuff!
