Under the umbrella of the Acappella Ministries and writer/producer Keith Lancaster, who wrote and produced here with Melissa Lancaster, the Acappella Vocal Band is a hipper, Gen X-oriented group with a message. These five casually-attired, appealing young men sing light rock songs, which are packaged with energetic vocal percussion, current production values and superior musicianship. 'Way To Glory' mixes up the tempo and note values unexpectedly; the contrast of long and short immediately perks up the ear. 'When I Forget' repeats the phrase anthemically throughout the verse, acting as a chordal accompaniment. 'Real' is tight and polished.

1995 recording produced by Keith Lancaster. 'Song In My Soul' is popularly considered to be the group's official debut (though in fact there were previous recordings). Modeled along the 'vocal band' concept, this youthful entourage of 5 has much in common with other Keith Lancaster-produced projects, of which there are many: technically accomplished singers, electronically aided and abetted, performing Contemporary Christian material. The AVB arrangements, while less embellished and more rhythmically propelled than those of some other groups of Acappella Ministries, are still built upon the foundation of verdant harmony. The recurrent high harmonies of songs such as 'Father' and 'I Won't Let Go' add dramatic intensity and flourish to their praise.

In the mid-1980s the founder and producer of Acappella, Keith Lancaster, began a national search for backup singers. Thus began Acappella Vocal Band, who sang behind leads Lancaster and Rodney Britt, but who also learned new songs, toured with Acappella, and recorded their first album as a quintet, "Give Me Light," followed quickly by "Stepping On A Cloud." These albums made a serious impression on many Christian teens, and led to AVB touring on their own by 1990. These first two albums became out of print, and demand grew. The original tapes were restored, and the result is "The Early Years." 19 songs are here: "Steppin' On A Cloud," "Jesus I'll Never Forget," "It's Gonna Rain," "Looking Out For Number One," "Because Of Who You Are," "Friends," "Giving Up," "Peace That Passes All Understanding," "Build An Ark," "Somewhere To Lay My Head," "Work At It With All Of Your Heart"… it's easy to see why these songs were so beloved and influential. The lyrics, the clean a cappella sound, the spirited harmonies—this is wonderful, groundbreaking stuff on many levels.
