Stormy Weather

Stormy Weather, a Damon Runyon-esque quintet of Hoosiers from the steel mill area of Gary/ Hammond, Indiana is the chief proponent of the nation's revitalized a cappella doo-wop sound. Growing up, they all idolized local residents, the Spaniels, of "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" fame.

The group has recorded eight albums, including the highly touted seasonal record entitled "Street Carols," which itself has become a holiday classic. Also, a cameo-recording on Rhino Records' sports music perennial, "Baseball's Greatest Hits." Their children's series, "Doo-Wop & Lollipops," has won numerous awards, including the Parent's Choice Gold Award and the Parent's Guide to Children's Media Award.

Stormy Weather's latest release is "Looking for an Echo," their Silver Anthology containing 27 tracks marking the group's 25th Anniversary, which features the official song of the Millennium, entitled "Lady Millennium."

They have starred in three nationally syndicated television specials: "40th Anniversary of Rock'n Roll," "Magic Moments," and "A Street Carol." The group was one of only 350 groups in the past 50 years to be selected for a major feature in the Billboard Book of American Singing Groups.

Stormy Weather is constantly touring: having appeared at premier theaters around the country, such as Radio City Music Hall/ NYC, the Wang Center/ Boston, the Front Row Theater/ Cleveland, the Star Plaza/ Merrillville, IN, the Chicago Theater, the Sunrise Music Theater/ Ft. Lauderdale, the Fox Theater/ St. Louis, Century City/ LA, and many, many others. The quintet has doo-woopped with such diverse stars as Kenny Rogers, Carl Perkins, the Pointer Sisters, Bill Cosby, Franki Valli, Tony Danza, Dion, Whoopi Goldberg, Smokey Robinson, the Gatlins, Bruce Willis, plus many legendary rock'n roll artists. The group has appeared on numerous television and radio shows.

Stormy Weather follows the premise that the voice is the most precious instrument there is. Accordingly, they keep the a cappella sounds of the street corner alive, well, and kickin'. Appealing to most music formats, the group stays busy recording and performing at theaters, festivals, and on occasion, selected street corners around the nation.

Pride of Gary/Hammond Indiana, 4-man, one woman Doo-Woppers Stormy Weather has impressed us with five excellent CDS prior to "LolliPops," "15 Rhapsodies from the Roots of Rock-n-Roll" directed at ages "2 to 10 and Beyond." "The Banana Boat Song," "Little Star," the silly "Alley Oop," based on a comic strip that actually died with its cartoonist, the sweet, soaring "Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Rock-n-Roll Lullabye" (lightly accompanied), "Morse Code of Love," "Iko Iko" (some non-vocal percussion), "Come Go with Me," "Peanut Butter" and "Little Red Shoes"—these are songs that are big fun to harmonize and listen to, on a street corner, concert stage or recording studio, which is one of the main things we love about Doo Wop. So we applaud SW's intention to turn kids on to Doo Wop and thoroughly enjoyed every cut on "LolliPops" (it's probably our inner child, harmonizing on our inner street corner!).

Subtitled "a Christmas collection for kids," "Doo Wop Yule Pop" is just plain fun at any age. Contemporary doo-wop mixed quintet Stormy Weather are from Gary, Indiana, and their versions of "Jingle Bells," "A Yule Tide Aire," "Rudolph The Rednosed Reindeer" and so many more (15 in all), are musically solid and amazingly creative. "Hardrock, Coco and Joe" and "Suzy Snowflake" are definitely directed at the little curtain climbers, who will be enthralled. "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" is anchored by a nimble vocal bass performance (bass takes the lead for two verses on "White Christmas"). "All I Want For Christmas" is reggaeized; "Hey Santa Claus," written by the Moonglows' Harvey Fuqua, (accompanied) swings hard. Last cut: "Lady Millenium," which will get you in the mood for New Year's Eve!

Featuring a guest line-up that makes us want to crash the backstage hospitality area to say hello, the Gary, Indiana based Stormy Weather turn the mikes over to the likes of Ronnie Spector ("Creation Of Love"), The Spaniels ("Santa's Lullabye," "Peace Of Mind") and the Chi-Lites ("It's The Time"). "Little Red Shoes," adds a tasty acoustic guitar part to the lead vocal by Rock 'n Roll Hall-Of-Famer Jerry Butler, and he sings it from the gut and the heart, that's for sure. Stormy Weather gets their turn, too, with "You're My Christmas Present," "Jingle Bell Rock," and others, but clearly, they enjoy sharing the credit with their talented associates.

Stormy Weather is Henry Farag, Jimmy Calinski, George Carl, Dave Sigler and Billy Shelton, and we have to say that these guys can womp-bop-a-loo-bomp the butts of a lot of Doo-Wop groups. OK, so there's your occasional accompaniment and Steve Milleresque taped radio sample for effect, but it's clear Stormy Weather has the vocal chops and soul not to need any of that. 15 choice cuts, and it's hard to choose standouts, but we'll pick a few: "Rock 'N Roll Lullabye," "Sixty Minute Man," "Since I Don't Have You," and Ry Cooder's "Crazy 'Bout An Automobile." You just know these guys are big fun live!
