In 2004, Dale Warland, after 31 seasons as Music Director of the Dale Warland Singers, announced his retirement. Warland has devoted his professional life to attaining the highest artistic level in choral singing. Through musicianship and attention to detail, he has built one of the finest choral ensembles in the United States. Under Warland's leadership, the Dale Warland Singers has thrilled choral music enthusiasts, not just in its Twin Cities home, but throughout North America and Europe.
Warland's outstanding achievements in the field of choral music were recognized in June 1995, when he received the Michael Korn Founderšs award at the annual Chorus America Conference in Seattle. This award, the highest honor for a choral conductor in the United States, has previously been given to outstanding choral conductors such as Robert Shaw, Margaret Hillis, and Roger Wagner.
In addition to his active schedule as Music Director of the Dale Warland Singers, Warland is in demand as a guest conductor, lecturer, composer, and clinician. He has conducted the Swedish Radio Choir, the Danish Radio Choir, the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and Israel's Cameran Singers. He had also rehearsed and prepared choirs for performances of major works in collaboration with notable conductors including Robert Shaw, Edo de Waart, Leonard Slatkin, and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. At Kryzstzof Pederecki's request, he has prepared the St. Luke Passion for major choruses in Los Angeles, Caracas, Stuttgart, and the Oregon Bach Festival. In 1990, he also prepared Penderecki's Polish Requiem, the culminating event of the Second World Symposium on Choral Music held in Helsinki.
Most Recently, Warland has been featured as a guest conductor at Carnegie Hall, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the Zimriya Festival in Jerusalem, and with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. He has also served on the faculty of the All Japan Chorus League National Competition in Fukuoka, Japan, and has lectured on American music at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Warland is an active composer and a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). He has served as co-chair of both the choral and recording panels of the National Endowment for the Arts and has received major grants from the Ford Foundation, the Bush Foundation, and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
Before devoting himself full-time to the Singers, Warland maintained an academic career which included 19 years as Director of Choral Music at Macalester College, St. Paul. He holds degrees from St. Olaf College, the University of Minnesota and the University of Southern California, and has received distinguished alumni awards from two of the institutions. Warland also holds an honorary doctorate from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Grammy-nominated Dale Warland Singers' final concert, on May 30, 2004, concluded 31 years of concerts, tours, radio broadcasts and critically acclaimed recordings. The Singers, a 40-voice professional choir based in Minneapolis/St. Paul, were recognized as one of the world's best a cappella choral ensembles. "Lux" is a collection of popular 19th and 20th century sacred music that shows just how high Dale Warland's standards were in creating and working with his renowned group. Picking favorites from this strong program isn't easy, but certainly Gretchaninoff's "Of Thy Mystical Supper," Vytautus Miskinis's "O sacrum convivium," Chesnokov's "Salvation is Created," John Rutter's "Hymn to the Creator of Light," the title tune by Eric Whitacre, Dominic Argento's "To God" (In Memoriam M.B.), and Nikolai Golovanov's "Otche Nash." The Dale Warland Singers has long been a favorite of ours for their bright, powerful harmonies and strong direction; "Lux Aurumque" is a beautiful, appropriate swan song for this great ensemble.

Beautiful River (Shall We Gather at the River) Simple Gifts She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain A la claire fontaine Deep River We Gather Together Not One Sparrow is Forgotten Cindy Gentle Annie We Shall Walk Through the Valley The Water is Wide By and By The Old Church Lay Me Low The Road Home |
Harvest Home originated in England as a festival for “bringing in the harvest” around the autumnal equinox. The community would work together to get the harvest (usually wheat, barley, corn, and oats) in before the autumn weather closed in. This bringing of the "harvest home" would be an occasion for great rejoicing accompanied by feasting, music, and dancing. Our “Homecoming” takes its origins from this festive term. This recording is a collection of familiar spirituals, folk songs, and hymns. Exquisitely sung and beautifully recorded, this CD offers some of the most heartfelt singing we’ve heard in awhile. Perfect intonation, sumptuous sound, and familiar tunes - this is Dale Warland at his best. Includes “Deep River,” Simple Gifts, “The Water is Wide,” Beautiful River (“Shall we gather at the river”) “We gather together,” and many more. The booklet features full text and notes on each song. The Grammy-nominated Dale Warland Singers, during their 31 years of concerts and recordings, set the standard for excellence in American choral singing. This was recorded before the group disbanded in 2004.

The Hour Glass (Irving Fine): - O know to end as to begin - Have you seen the white lily grow - O do not wanton with those eyes - Against Jealousy - Lament - The Hour-Glass Tom o'Bedlam (Jacob Avshalomov) Reincarnations (Samuel Barber): - When again all these rare perfections meet - All-circling point - His body was an orb - On a round ball - Nor do I doubt - See how the arched Earth Psalm 90 (Charles Ives) |
Reincarnations is a program of five American masterworks and includes one world
premier recording (Tom o'Bedlam). "The Hour Glass" by Irving Fine is difficult
and virtuosic cycle, written in a lyrical style just before his 12-tone experimentation.
"Tom o'Bedlam" by Jacob Avshlomov is based on a text about one of the patients
of the insane asylum, St. Mary of Bethlehem, in 16th century. Accompanied by
oboe and percussion, this powerful piece mimics the nonsense and madness in
the text. "Reincarnations" by Samuel Barber is a set of three pieces which uses
James Stephen's re-writing of old Gaelic poetry and includes the absolutely
gorgeous setting of "The Coolin (The Fair Haired One)." All of the works on
this recording are demanding but skillfully sung by the incomparable Dale Warland
Singers.

The 1975 Pulitzer Prize in Music winner and winner of Fulbright and Guggenheim
awards , Minnesota composer Dominick Argento marked his diamond jubilee in 2003
with performances of his works by the numerous musical organizations, including
the Dale Warland Singers, who have commissioned him across the decades. First
we have the first piece written for the group by Argento in 1981, "I Hate and
I Love (Odi et Amo)," which includes percussion. Then "A Toccata of Galuppi's,
a rhapsody for chamber choir, harpsichord and string quartet, with poetry by
Robert Browning. The final piece, "Walden Pond," puts to music the outdoor musings
of 19th century author and naturalist, Henry David Thoreau, including "The Pond,"
"Angling," "Observing," "Extolling" and "Walden Revisited." All songs are lightly
accompanied. Extensive liner notes tell us all about the composer, the music
and the group. Complex harmonies, dramatic phrasing--very few groups would attempt
to perform this music; the DWS do it justice with professional elegance. Excellent!

Some of the most beautiful music in the world can be heard in a performance
of Rachmaninoff's Vespers. Better to be described as an All-night vigil, Rachmaninoff
uses Russian melodies dating from the Byzantine era. In the Eastern Church,
the All-night vigil is observed before religious feasts. This piece is difficult
for any non-Russian choir due to the language. The Dale Warland Singers sing
with great energy and beautiful dark tones as befits the Russian style.

Rejoyce in the Lamb Antiphon for God the Father Pilgrims' Hymn Bat Yiftach (Jephthah's Daughter) Chichester Psalms Psalm 1082 |
The forty-voice choir, directed by Dale Warland, are known for their advancement of modern choral literature. This CD bookends works by Bejamin Britten and Leonard Bernstein, with several other composers - Stephen Paulus, Nancy Wertsch and Aharon Harlap among them - contributing. Britten's "Rejoice In The Lamb" (Op.30), is an exercise in contrast, with eerie chromatic dissonances and diminutive solo passages in marked relief to the organ-accompanied, florid crescendos of the chorus. Harlap's "Bat Yiftach" features a distinctive solo French horn motif, rebuked by an agitated chorus; the music from Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" were actually exerpted from work the celebrated conductor had written for an unproduced Thornton Wilder play! With organ, percussion and harp, the result has several movements and is sung in Hebrew; moments of stark beauty are shattered by portentous discord, only to be relieved by a dreamlike peace.

We have here an assemblage of the choral works which are the substance of American folk music history. African-American spirituals, Anglo-American and uniquely American songs are beautifully presented, some with concert harp accompaniment. In the insert booklet, which has the lyrics of the songs, is also included a paragraph about the history of each song. For example, "Skip To My Lou" was an attempt to accommodate the joy of folk dance with the approval of powerful churches during the Protestant revivalist movement of the early 1800's. Rather than holding dances, the members of faithful communities held "play-parties" which featured unaccompanied singing and lively movement based, roughly, on children's games. So instead of having a caller and Devil's instrument (fiddle), the participants sang their own cues. We bet you never thought "Skip To My Lou" was reactionary! This is a beautiful recording, with fascination included in the presentation, of some of America's best known and loved songs.

Kyrie Gloria' Credo Sanctus Agnus Dei Agnus Dei Miserere Mei, Deus Salvator mundi Psalm 23 Requiem aeternam (I) Psalm 121 Requiem Aeternam (II) I Heard AVoice From Heaven |
The Dale Warland Singers is a forty-voice professional chorus founded in l972 whose avowed goal is to commission and perform twentieth century music. In this, their twentieth recording, they sing four scores of transcendent beauty. The lyrics of the pieces are the Church's timeless words of faith. Each of the four have fascinating stories. The best known is the 400 year old composition, Gregorio Allegri's "Miserere," which was decreed illegal to publish, by Papal decree, as it was felt to be too heavenly for most mortals. Thus, there were only three known copies out side of the Sistine Chapel in 1770, when a fourteen year old Mozart heard it and transcribed it from memory. Three twentieth century scores complete this recording. Herbert Howells "Requiem" was written while grieving the loss of his nine year old son. He hid it away for forty-four years as it was too painful for him to bear the idea of hearing it. Frank Martin's "Mass" lay in a drawer for forty years because he felt it was between him and God. Finally, Samuel Barber's "Agnus Dei" began as a string quartet. He expanded it at the request of Toscanini for string orchestra. It was the music played when both F.D.R. and J.F.K. were laid to rest. He then transcribed it for voice. Wonderful!

The Herald Angels Sing Ding Dong! Merril on High A Savior From on High Joy to the World O Little Town of Bethlehem O Come, All Ye Faithful We Three Kings Wassail Song |
This delicate and angelic Christmas collection is as magical as Christmas itself. The Dale Warland Singers, a choral ensemble from Minnesota, performs sixteen classic carols as arranged by Steven Paulus. The collaboration between Warland and Paulus (the latter associated with both Robert Shaw and Neville Marriner), is a serendipitous one indeed. The tasteful accompaniment on 11 of the tracks, such as the lachrymose oboe of "We Three Kings" or the lilting harp that offsets the tension of the melody of "The Ship Carol," are the perfect accessory. "Angels We Have Heard On High" is joyous, the high harmony ascending to an exultant and inspired climax.

Coventry Carol Hymn To The Mother of God O sacrum conivium The Rose El Rorro Ave Maria Verbum caro factum est Ave Maris Stella The Angel Gabriel O magnum mystrium Iesu parvule O Be Joyful The Three Kings The Lamb Agnus Dei |
"A Rose In Winter" is a seasonal program of mostly modern, classical compositions (20th century). Polyphonic texture, as exemplified by Kverno's "Ave Maria Stella," and its two-part choir, is heightened in intensity by pushing the vocal ranges, from both ends of the audio spectrum. Other compositions, such as John Paynter's "The Rose," use tone clusters (simultaneous discordant pitches) to evoke a sense of stasis, of both rest and motion. The most melodic selection is "O Be Joyful," written and played by guitarist Jeffrey Van; its binary form alternates an adagio tempo with double-time (one other track is accompanied, the rest, a cappella), very suggestive of the Rennaissance. The Dale Warland Singers are one of the most lauded professional choirs, and its interpretations are always of the highest standard.

A forty-voice chorus devoted to the performance of works by twentieth-century composers, this 1995 recording by the Dale Warland Singers is modern classical choral music at its most inspiring and proficient. Sometimes oblique, emphasizing texture over adherence to an immediately recognizable form, works such as the second track, "Izhe Xeruvimy," seem to unfold in a series of layers. The charming and delicate "The Rune Of Hospitality," with the voices gently and broadly undulating against a repetitive acoustic guitar, suggests the enigma of the universe, the expanse of the night sky.
