Alfred Burt and Jimmy Joyce Singers : This Is Christmas Songbook

Review: Considered by some to be the finest recording of Christmas carols ever, these original compositions were written by Alfred and primary lyricists Wihla Hutson and Bates G. Burt (Alfred's father). In fact, the carols were initially sent as Christmas messages to Burt family members and friends! Alfred died in 1954 at the age of thirty three, but his legacy has brought joy to untold myriads of listeners ever since. Artists from Nat "King" Cole to the Boston Pops Orchestra and Chorus have popularized what conductor John Williams described as "mini-masterpieces." The sixteen voice a cappella choir directed by arranger Jimmy Joyce (who had worked with Alfred in the Alvino Rey Orchestra) is sprightly and surefooted in their performance, which was recorded in 1963. A sentimental and popular favorite.

Songlist: This Is Christmas, Christmas Cometh Caroling, Ah, Bleak And Chill The Wintry Wind, Come, Dear Children, Some Children See Him, Sleep, Baby Mine, All On A Christmas Morning, Caroling, Caroling, The Star Carol, We'll Dress The House, Christ In The Stranger's Guise, Nigh Bethlehem, What Are The Signs, Jesu Parvule, O Hearken Ye

Bob Chilcott : The Twelve Days of Christmas

It is an exuberant setting of the well-known carol in which the 'five gold rings' refrain is re-written to appear in an array of guises: gentle soprano solo, swinging barbershop quartet, hard funk, and rock gospel style. This version is for an SATB choir but retains the flexibility to include 'guest' performers. Even the audience can join in!

Jeremy Summerly : Passetime with Good Company

Review: A fascinating collection exploring the musical riches from a most colorful period, the Middle Ages. Reflecting the atmosphere of a time where disease and sudden death were counterbalanced by faith and 'joie de vivre', this volume contrasts sacred settings such as the ever-popular Gaudete Christus Est Natus and previously unpublished Jesu Dulcis Memoria with such medieval secular classics as Sumer Is Icumen In, Agincourt Carol and the celebratory Passetime With Good Company.

Songlist: Gaudete Christus Est Natus , Jesu Dulcis Memoria , Sumer Is Icumen In, Agincourt Carol, Passetime With Good Company, Coventry Carol

John Joubert : Carols & Anthems for Mixed Voices

Review: John Joubert's compositional range is considerable, yet it is with his short choral works in the Anglican tradition that his mastery has been best appreciated. Here for the first time collected in one handsome volume are a dozen of the finest, with texts from both the biblical and non-liturgical. This anthology from a lifetime's output is convincing proof of a composer who still has much new to say in this most demanding medium.

John Joubert : Five Songs Of Incarnation

Review: Five Songs of Incarnation is planned to be performed as a cycle in celebration of the Nativity. Each song is prefaced by quotations from the first chapter of St. John's Gospel set for tenor solo and SATB unaccompanied. Although the work is designed as a single entity to be performed without a break, individual songs may be performed separately, with or without their respective preface. Four of the songs are reworkings of carols from the composer's earlier Five Carols for Five Voices, Op. 78. The central song, I Sing of a Maiden, is new, as are the prefaces for tenor solo.

Songlist: I Sing Of A Maiden, Let Us Gather Hand In Hand, Make We Joy Now In This Feast, Of A Rose, A Lovely Rose, When Christ Was Born Of Mary

John Rutter (Editor) : Christmas Motets

Review: This songbook is part of the Oxford Choral Classics series and gathers in one volume sixteen of the finest motets and related pieces for the season of Christmas. Keyte / Parrot : The Shorter New Oxford Book of Carols

Review: This--the performers' edition of the massive New Oxford Book of Carols--is a selection of 120 carols in 173 different settings. The music, which is divided into composed carols and traditional carols, covers nine centuries of Christmas music from around the world. Popular and unknown material is included: the settings are straightforward and each carol is accompanied by a note on historical background. The emphasis is on the fresh approach to the carol, and the editors have cleared away the accretions of years to recapture the original spirit and vigor of the music. Selections from the book are featured on EMI Classic's recordings "The Carol Album," "The Christmas Album," and "Carol Album 2," performed by the Taverner Consort, Choir, and Players under the direction of Andrew Parrott.
