The Mississippi Children's Choir has earned their spot in the gospel music world since the moment they began making music. The choir was formed in 1990 to open a concert for the world's Number 1 Mississippi Mass Choir. The crowd attending and the Malaco producers couldn't believe their ears. The children's choir have been singing and recording ever since. Its 200 members, ages 7 to 17, are chosen through individual auditions and hail from about 25 Mississippi cities. Since its 1990 founding, the Mississippi Children's Choir have produced three albums, all to great fanfare.
It absolutely has become gospel music's most acclaimed children's choir. That blessed concert for which the choir came together was in the cavernous Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, Mississippi, Malaco Record's hometown. The Mississippi Mass Choir was performing to record its future Billboard Number 1 album, God Gets the Glory, live for a crowd of 7,500. When the children sang to warm up the audience, the response was so overwhelming that plans began immediately for their own album. Their debut disc, Children of the King, became an instant hit when it was released in 1992. After moving up Billboard's Top Gospel Album chart, it won a GMWA (Gospel Music Workshop of America) Excellence Award and a Best New Artist nomination from gospel's coveted Stellar Awards. In 1994, the choir released its second album, A New Creation, with even larger success. Not only did this album sell nearly 100,000 copies, but also it showcased a new artist, 14-year old Bryan Wilson. Bryan's anointed lead on His Eye is On the Sparrow for the choir led to his first solo album also on Malaco. As a result, both the choir and Bryan captured the 1996-97 Stellar nominations in the same category for Children's Performance of the Year.
The choir returned with its third, show stopping live album and video, When God's Children Get Together, in 1998. It was met with a non-stop standing ovation when it was recorded before an audience of 4,000 at Greater Bethlehem Temple in Jackson, Mississippi. The album also introduced young solo star, Onitshaw Shaw, a Los Angeles sensation, and featured Malaco recording artist Rev. Benjamin Cone. The Mississippi Children's Choir is the "junior" choir of Malaco's Mississippi Mass Choir. The same ministers of music, Jerry Smith and David R. Curry lead the choir. The children's choir is directed by Dorcus Thigpen. Executive director is Jerry Mannery.
