Estonian Television Girls Choir

It is widely known that the Estonians love singing. That is proved by the tradition of song festivals, which celebrates its 135th anniversary next year. Generations change and new singers come to take their own place. This has been continuous, regardless of the conditions. Time only dictates the methods used for bringing children and youth close to music. There is not only a question of acquiring and developing the art of singing, but it also enhances the spirits of youth and thereby heals the society. We owe the gratitude to our excellent music teachers, who have taken the system for teaching music in school onto one of the highest levels in the world. Still, in Estonia nowadays the studies of vocal music are mostly concentrated into activity schools and clubs. The economic resources of schools are not equal, also the financial situation within a family could sometimes be an obstacle on the way of child’s education in singing.

On December, 8th, 2002 the Estonian Television Girls Choir established a sub-foundation "Give Child the Voice"in the frames of the Foundation of Estonian National Culture, making the first contribution at the same time. The purpose of this foundation is to support the vocal education of youth by providing appropriate facilities for that. The applicants can be either music groups, choirs or solo performers who need support for education, holding concerts, concert tours, obtaining musical instruments etc. We would like to support the spiritual development of normal healthy children in Estonian society.

The internationally well-known Estonian Television Girls Choir has grown out from the singing group of 4 to 6 year-old children, formed in 1990. Today there are 30 young performers between the ages of 15 and 21 singing in the choir. This choir is part of the non-profit organisation Music Studio of Estonian Television Children’s Programs. Its choir school has presently more than 250 children. The repertoire of the Girls Choir is varied: from Gregorian chants to the songs of contemporary composers, from folk songs with choreography to pop-jazz programmes. The chief conductor of the Estonian Television Girls Choir and the Artistic Director of the Music Studio is Aarne Saluveer.

Music Studio of Estonian Television Children's Programs was founded in 1990 by Eve Viilup, conducted by Aarne Saluveer. Their repertoire consists of classical and modern choir music, sacred music, folk music accompanied by dance movements and modern pop-jazz music programs. The ETGC has covered itself with acclaim, medals and awards from international contests and festivals, and appeared in prestigious venues, most recently they were the toast of the 2003 American Choral Director's Association Convention in New York City. There are 37 stunningly beautiful mostly a cappella (some piano accompanied, some with light orchestra) songs on "Ring," mostly sung in Estonian, but a handful in German, Hungarian and English: "Bow Down Thine Ear O Lord" by Hovland, the spiritual "Go Down Moses," Thomas Morley's "It Was A Lover and His Lass," Leonard Bernstein's "I Feel Pretty," and Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice's "I Don't Know How to Love Him."
