Bowling Green State University Men's Chorus

The BGSU Men's Chorus is an auditioned large singing ensemble that is open to all male students at Bowling Green State University. Their motto and reputation as being "America's Finest Singing Machine" is well deserved, having a tradition of over 30 years of excellence. The chorus goes on 2 tours each year, once during Fall semester, and once during Spring semester. The fall tour goes to locations in Ohio and Michigan, singing at high schools during the day, and various venues in the evenings; the spring tour goes to a different location each year. In the past few spring semesters, the Men's Chorus has gone to Colorado, Florida, New York City, and Toronto.

The BGSU Men's Chorus has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with barbershop singing thanks to former director Richard (R.D.) Mathey. Barbershop music is said to be one of the few truly American musical styles in existence, and many current and former Men's Chorus members have made names for themselves in the field of barbershop singing. The Barbershop Harmony Society (formerly SPEBSQSA) International champion quartets The Rapscallions (1984), Interstate Rivals (1987), Acoustix (1990), The Ritz (1991), Marquis (1995), Yesteryear (1997), and Platinum (2000) have all featured former Men's Chorus members. In the college competition, the BGMC has produced 3 of the 11 collegiate quartet champions. Since 1992, The Real Deal (1994), Stop The Presses (1995), and Catfish Bend (2002) have all been crown champions in the college division. There are also several quartets currently competing in Society contests with BGMC alumni in them. Among them are Uptown Sound (2002 International Silver Medalists), Hot Air Buffoons, Hot Topic, Catfish Bend, and Max Q (2004 International Silver Medalists).

Founded in 1923, the BGSU (Ohio) Men's Chorus (formerly the Men's Glee Club) has had its ups and downs (disbanding during WWII as choristers went off to war, for instance), but now, under the direction of renowned conductor William Skoog, the Chorus tours and performs in concert regularly. "Lifted in Song" is a collection of 22 varied songs, beginning with several spiritual tunes, "Exultate Jussti in Domino," Handel's "Praise the Lord," Jacob Arcadelt's "Ave Maria," Joseph Martin's "Toccata of Praise," "Prayer of the Children," "Joshua," "Christmas Comes Anew" and the title tune. Following that are Martin's "Who Are the Brave," Ron Jeffers' "A Drinking Song" and "A Plea For Old Friends," Timothy Takach's "She Moved Through The Fair," "Songs From Matengo Folktales" the King's Singers' a cappella "Jenk's Vegetable Compound," and Smokey Robinson's a cappella "Who's Lovin' You." Several songs are lightly accompanied. "Lifted" is full of good stuff, and goes a long way to uphold the BGSU's longstanding tradition as "America's Finest Singing Machine!"

"Song for Today" is a gem from the 1993 version of this legendary collegiate ensemble, who refer to themselves as "America's Finest Singing Machine" for good reason. The first half of the CD, 12 of 24 cuts, is spiritually oriented, including "Sing Dem Herrn," "O Regim Caeli," "Praise Him!," "Laudamus," "E'en So Lord Jesus Quickly Come," "God Is My Rock," "Heaven," "The Creation" and the spiritual, "Ride the Chariot." The second half is more secular material, "Selections from the Student Prince," the title tune, "She Is My Slender Small Love," "Let No Man Despise Thy Youth," "Polly Von," the lilting "From Boston Harbor," "Blue World," "Kiss the Girl" and the barbershop tune "Red Head." Spirited, powerful stuff from BGSU's talented young male singers, one of the best collegiate singing traditions of all time!
