Listening to barbershop, hearing those tags, that harmony, is like nothing else. But even for the true barbershop fan, there really is something better - watching it. Fortunately, especially for those fans of the barbershop genre, there are videos available. And not just any videos, but competition videos of the very top quartets and choruses on the planet, in the very competitions that each year decide just who the best choruses and quartets on the planet are. And not only that, but there are concert DVDs available from some of the groups who've won those quartet and chorus championships.

Winning the gold medals this time was St. Louis-based Vocal Spectrum featuring Timothy Waurick, Eric Dalbey, Jonny Moroni and Chris Hallam. In 2nd place was barbershop "supergroup" Max Q, OC Times were 3rd, Metropolis 4th and Flipside finished 5th. With many, many hundreds of quartets competing every year to finish in the top 20 is a real accomplishment and these quarts clearly demonstrate why barbershop singing remains vibrant to this day.

Another great Sweet Adelines International convention took place this year, and this one was especially exciting as it was held in Las Vegas, Nevada! The Bay Area favorite, the Razzcals did quite well this year, taking 3rd Place. Four Betty's, who also put on a great show at our 2005 Harmony Sweepstakes, Chicago Regional, grabbed 2nd place. This year's Queens, SALT, stole the show, reminding us once again, so many great performers/musicians have come out of Sweden. This CD features two tracks from the quartets placing 4th - 10th, three tracks from Four Bettys and the Razzcals, and we get to hear four tracks from SALT! If you're looking for the best in Sweet Adelines' recordings, this collection definitely delivers!

Meanest Thing You Ever Did They Wrote 'Em In The Good Ol' Days Java Jive Room Service I Want You To Be My Baby Salute To The 20th Century Ukulele Lady |
The focus in the Barbershop world is excellence in live performance, and all of us in the audience of the 2002 Harmony Sweeps Finals were treated to one of the best, the set of LA's The Perfect Gentlemen. "Live" gives everyone else a chance to join the excited, appreciative audience enjoying the Gentlemen live in concert, at the historic Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu. (This would be a good time to warn purists that there is, not too surprisingly, some ukelele accompaniment in several of the songs). PG classics "Meanest Thing You Ever Did," "They Wrote 'Em in the Good Old Days," "Java Jive," "Room Service" and "I Want You to Be My Baby" all lead up to the Gents' hilarious masterpiece, "Salute to the 20th Century," with costumes, wigs, and musical renditions of "Shine On Harvest Moon" in everything from Barbershop and Dixieland to Blues, Big Band and Doo-Wop to Disco, Techno Punk and Rap. And believe us, you haven't lived until you've seen 4 kind of chubby barbershop guys in sunglasses, NFL jerseys and spats do a devastatingly funny takedown of Rap music. Great stuff!

Formed in 1972, the Minneapolis/St. Paul-based Emporium won the championship after only three years in the running. These two performances were recorded with seven cameras by PBS in Charleston, North Carolina, and also at the World Theater, home of Minnesota’s other famous export, the "Prairie Home Companion." Well, on with the show aside from wonderful barbershop harmony, the four gents couldn’t be more endearing, with corny jokes and schtick aplenty. Songs such as "I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing" and "Hard To Be Humble" the latter an audience participation event will have you smiling. "I Never Knew You" is the evening’s tender moment. The giant SPEBSQSA convention in Louisville, KY once again attracted the best barbershop groups in the world, with gold medals on their minds. There were only four of those medals, though, and they ended up around the necks of Gotcha!, who wowed all of us in the audience at the 2004 A Cappella Summit. They have two great cuts on "Top Twenty," the ringing "If I Had My Way" and "Play That Barbershop Chord," while all the other groups get a single cut. Silver was won by Max Q, who sing "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street," 3rd Place by Riptide's "From the First Hello To the Last Goodbye," 4th place by former Harmony Sweeps Winner Metropolis, who give us "Medley: I'm In Love Again/Them There Eyes," and 5th for Saturday Evening Post" who sing "Blues In The Night." There are actually 21 Top Quartets here, and there's not a weak cut on the entire CD!

The Gold went to St. Charles, Missouri's dynamic Ambassadors of Harmony, who sing Rogers and Hammerstein's "I Have Dreamed" and Frank Loesser's "New Ashmolean Marching Society and Student's Conservatory Band," which must be heard to be believed. 2nd Place went to The Northern Lights, with "Make Them Hear You," 3rd to New Tradition Chorus, who recall the minstrel shows with Stephen Foster's "Medley: Camptown Races/Ring Ring de Banjo/Buffalo Gals," 4th to Alexandria Harmonizers" with Gershwin's bluesy "Summertime," and 5th to The Alliance, who give us "The Sunshine of Your Smile."
