Bob Chilcott : High Flight

Review: Commissioned by the King's Singers in celebration of their 40th birthday, this work has unusual forces and a comparatively complex nature. Using two texts by Henry Vaughan and John Gillespie Magee, the work charts a journey from a free tempo reflective beginning to a rousing ending, celebratory in tone.
The work was first performed by the King's Singers & King's College Choir at King's College Chapel, Cambridge, 1 May 2008.

Bob Chilcott : Sacred Choral Selections

Review: The beautiful eight-part setting of 'My Prayer' starts out with a beautiful alto duet. This challenging piece is a joy to perform and to hear. 'Pray that Jerusalem may have peace' is a Scottish Psalter that was commisioned to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the consecration of Glenalmond College Chapel. The multiple key and tempo changes make this a challenging but exciting piece to perform. The text in 'God so loved the world' comes from John 3:16. The soprano solo adds a beautiful descant to this touching piece. 'Even Such Is Time' comes from the text by Sir Walter Raleight. The piece starts out with soft, but expressive, four-part harmonies. Half way through the song, the men's parts divisi. The soprano solo at the end adds a great finish. George Herber's text in 'Even-Song' is brought to life with gorgeous harmonies and yet another sweet soprano solo.

Songlist: My Prayer, Pray That Jerusalem May Have Peace, God So Loved The World, Even Such Is Time, Even-Song

Bob Chilcott : Songs and Cries of London Town

Review: Songs And Cries Of London by Bob Chilcott is a vibrant and varied choral cantata in five movements for SATB choir, upper-voice choir, piano duet, and optional percussion. The two outer movements draw their words and inspiration from "The Cries Of London" by Orlando Gibbons and frame three contrasting middle movements setting a poem each by Dunbar and wordsworth, as well as the anonymous 18th century rhyme "Oranges and Lemons." Together, these settings evoke a surprisingly contemporary impression of London's sights, sounds, and moods, inspiring some irresistible music, by turns contemplative and unquenchably thrilling.

Bob Chilcott : Swimming over London

Review: This is a vivid musical depiction of the colourful dreamscape created in Charles Bennett's text. The solo tenor floats over the soft, jazzy harmonies of the other voices as he narrates the journey through London's sky, noting the 'blackbirds in the sleeping streets' and a taxicab slumbering below. Swimming over London is recorded by The King's Singers on their CD of the same name.

Bob Chilcott : The Angry Planet - An Environmental Cantata

Review: This monumental cantata for massed forces was commissioned by David Hill and The Bach Choir and premiered as part of the 2012 BBC Proms. Setting a specially commissioned text by Charles Bennett, Chilcott skilfully uses both metred and unmetered sung and spoken lines to highlight the text's environmental message. While the musically interlinked choirs sing of humanity's negligence towards nature in a series of dream images, the endearing and innocent tunes of the children's choir ultimately evoke a sense of hope for the future. Creating a unique opportunity for adult and children's choirs to collaborate, this captivating piece offers a fun and educational performance experience for singers both young and old.

Bob Dylan : Arrangements for Mixed Voices

Review: "Blowin' in the Wind" - Written by Bob Dylan and covered by countless artists, this protest song from the 1960s raises questions about peace, war and freedom. The answers are there, but not easy to find. "Forever Young" - This beautiful folk song is perfect for your concert setting and important for your students as they explore recent American history. Bob Dylan's seminal work was originally composed as a lullaby for his eldest son Jesse, bestowing wishes and blessings upon him. As a choral, Forever Young works especially well as a adulatory song for graduations! "Times They Are A-Changin'" - This re-imagined interpretation of the classic Bob Dylan song is perfect for any concert with a social justice theme. The re-harmonization and contrasting musical style will bring a new attention and poignancy to these well-known words. There is a new musical home for this in concert halls where it has not been found before.

Bobby McFerrin : Charts Package

Review: Without a doubt one of the most popular songs of the 20th century, "Don't Worry, Be Happy" is re-created here in an exact transcription of the Bobby McFerrin's original hit recording from the album "Simple Pleasures." 3 Soprano parts, 2 Alto parts, and a very hip Bass line back up the soloist or soloists of your choice - a cappella. Great fun to sing and to hear! A reverent and truly beautiful rendition of the widely known "23rd Psalm," this piece is frequently used in religious services. It's pace is slow and contemplative, and the music enhances the beauty of the language. As recorded on Bobby's "Medicine Music" CD. In "Grace," alto, tenor, and bass voices suggest the chant-like song of a carillon while the sopranos create a rhapsodic melody. This meditative score is enhanced with rhythmic breathing and optional parts for two cellos or cello section. Transcribed from "Hush," Bobby's duo album with Yo-Yo Ma. Each of Bobby's arrangements comes with extensive performance notes. With text adapted from the Book of Matthew, "Manna" provides a simple refrain with wonderfully textured variations that bring light to the thought "Whoever believes in Me will live forever." "Manna" includes a through-composed piano part as an additional color in the ensemble. "Come to Me" is rhythmic music full of life, freedom, and joy. An up-tempo piece to make everyone feel good, "come to me" with text adapted from the Book of John, includes parts for vocal percussion, body percussion, and handclaps. As recorded on Bobby's "Simple Pleasures" CD.

Songlist: knickknack, Don't Worry Be Happy, Grace, 23rd Psalm, Manna, Come to Me

Carsten Gerlitz : The Celtic Choirbook

Review: Celtic music is enjoying a well-deserved revival. This revival may have been inspired by historical Hollywood epics, by popular dance acts such as "Riverdance", by Michael Flatley or purely by the emotional power of Celtic melodies. The songs all tell stories that have been passed down through successive generations, with more facets than any other kind of traditional music: some are melancholy dirges, some playful and lively dance tunes. This book brings together 20 of these traditional melodies in contemporary, modern arrangements for mixed chorus. In them you will find homophonic movements, sweeping melodic lines, vocal imitations of Celtic instruments and rousing rhythms. The irresistible charm of this music will leave no choral singer unmoved and is bound to find favour with audiences.

Songlist: Londonderry Air, Auld Lang Syne, Amazing Grace, Early One Morning, Lullaby, Dacw "Nghariad I Lawr Yn Y Berllan, Carrickfergus, Down By The Sally Gardens, Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?, Whiskey In The Jar, An Irish Blessing, Riverdance, All Through The Night, Gin A Body, Believe Me, Scarbourough Fair, Greensleeves, The First Noel, Botany Bay, The Wild Rover

Cecilia McDowall : A Time for all Seasons

Review: A Time for all Seasons is an evocative cantata that explores the complexities of the human condition. The well-known To every thing there is a season text from Ecclesiastes is interwoven with a modern-day reworking of the verses by award-winning poet Kevin Crossley-Holland. McDowall's impressive range of musical styles, effective antiphonal writing, and artful juxtaposition of textures work together to create a meaningful experience for the listener. The work's scoring contributes to the narrative, with sections for solo soprano or full choir contrasting with prescient interjections from the uppervoice choir. The part for upper voices may also be sung by a children's choir, and there is an optional part for percussion.

Cecilia McDowall : Stabat Mater

Review: McDowall's setting of the Stabat Mater has been described as 'an outstanding work of great solemnity and poignancy' (Tempo, 2013). The work comprises seven movements in a symmetrical structure-from the impassioned choral opening, through two intense yet diverse baritone solos and contemplative plainchant chorales, to the stately finale uniting all the voices. The optimistic central movement, in a major tonality, may be performed by children's choir or a semi-chorus of sopranos and altos from the main group. A plaintive meditation on the sorrows of the Virgin Mary as she stands by the Cross, McDowall's Stabat Mater is a sophisticated modern alternative to more well-known settings, ideal for performance at non-liturgical Lenten services.

Songlist: Quis est homo qui non fleret, Pro peccatis suae gentis, Eia Mater, fons amoris, Sancta Mater, Virgo virginum praeclara, Inflammatus et accensus

Chanticleer : A Cappella Charts for Mixed Choirs

Review: Joseph Jennings' rich a cappella arrangement of the traditional spiritual, 'Steal Away,' is an enjoyable treat for both the singers and the audience. Winner of the 2003 Chanticleer Student Choral Compositition Competition, 'She Walks in Beauty,' for advanced choirs, sets the Lord Byron text in a lush harmonic style. Composer Joseph Twish sets a deeply moving homophonic work with 'Wandering,' exploring the text "God has mercy on me. Wand'ring, wand'ring.' That piece was also a previous winner of the composition competition. 'Galbally Farmer' works well with advanced Jr High, High School or moderate adult choirs, another audience favorite! Set to a 9th Century Japanese poem, in 'Voices of Autumn, composer Jackson Hill uses traditional musical stylistic devices from the same culture to create a seamless, tranquil unaccompanied choral work.

Charles Gounod : Messe Breve, No. 7

Review: French composer, Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a prominent composer in his day, best remembered for his Ave Maria and opera Faust. 1890 saw the premiere of his Brief Mass. This work helped establish Gounod as a noteworthy composer. Despite being a minor composer to us today, Gounod was famed in his day, so much so that at his funeral, Camille Saint-Saëns played the organ and Gabriel Fauré conducted. Gounod's Brief Mass proves the composer's extraordinary talent and caught the attention of much of Paris when it was first performed, composed for SATB choir, solo voices and organ or piano accompaniment. For all aspiring choirs, Gounod's Brief Mass is an imperative, sublime addition to the repertoire.

Christ Church Cathedral Choir : Invictus: A Passion

Christopher Tin : The Lost Birds (An Extinction Elegy)

Review: The Lost Birds is a musical memorial to bird species driven to extinction by humankind. Sweeping and elegaic, it's a haunting tribute to those soaring flocks that once filled our skies, but whose songs have since been silenced. It's a celebration of their feathered beauty: their symbolism as messengers of hope, peace, and renewal. But it's also a warning about our own tenuous existence on the planet: that the fate that befell those once soaring flocks foreshadows our own extinction.

It contains the complete music of all fourteen compositions as in Monteverdi's original print, plus the psalm 'Lauda Jerusalem' and the two Magnificats in a choice of pitches. Clayton Parr : Supra! A Feast of Georgian Song

Review: Traditional choirs, folk ensembles or any other group of singers will enjoy this collection of songs from the Republic of Georgia selected, notated and recorded by Clayton Parr and Carl Linich. Like folk songs from the rest of the world, Georgian songs are traditionally connected with events of daily life - work songs, laments, lullabies, songs about historical events or figures, ritual songs, healing songs, traveling songs, comic songs, and dance songs. Table songs are a particularly important genre, and the tradition of the supra (ritual banquet), with elaborate toasts and songs, occupies a central position in Georgian traditional culture. Traditionally, these songs are in three polyphonic voice parts, and the authors have provided many pedagogical tools for learning: recordings, pronunciation guides, lyric sheets, song backgrounds and recordings. Includes 18 songs, CD includes song demos, part-Learning tracks available online.

Songlist: Aghdgomasa Shensa, Alilo Imeruli, Aliluia, Aragvispiruli Lashkruli, Brdzana Soloman, Es Akvani, Kriste Aghsdga, Lashkrad Tsasvla, Lashkruli, Mamli Mukhasa, Mokle Shemodzahkili, Nanina, Patara Simonia, Patskha, Perad Shindi, Saokhunjo Perkhuli, Shen Khar Venakhi, Ts'Ints'Qaro, Mokle Mravalzhamieri
