![]() | My Prayer
|
The beautiful eight-part setting of 'My Prayer' starts out with a beautiful alto duet. This challenging piece is a joy to perform and to hear. 'Pray that Jerusalem may have peace' is a Scottish Psalter that was commisioned to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the consecration of Glenalmond College Chapel. The multiple key and tempo changes make this a challenging but exciting piece to perform. The text in 'God so loved the world' comes from John 3:16. The soprano solo adds a beautiful descant to this touching piece. 'Even Such Is Time' comes from the text by Sir Walter Raleight. The piece starts out with soft, but expressive, four-part harmonies. Half way through the song, the men's parts divisi. The soprano solo at the end adds a great finish. George Herber's text in 'Even-Song' is brought to life with gorgeous harmonies and yet another sweet soprano solo.

'O Jesus, Grant Me Hope and Comfort' is a 17th Century composition by Johann Wolfgang Franck, whose compositions have enjoyed great popularity due to their pure melodies and the warm faith expressed in their text. A Choral Motet by Hugo Distler, 'Praise to the Lord' is based on the melody by Stralsund Gesangbuch, from Distler's Opus 6, No. 2. The beautiful melodies in each of the 4 parts create a beautiful dissonance that is magical to the ears. David A. Gerig's original composition, 'Shout to God' starts out unison, but soon breaks into 2-part cannon, then the voices join for beautiful 4-part harmony. Tschesnokoff's 'Let Thy Holy Presence' is beautifully arranged by Walter Ehret. All 4 parts divisi at one time or another, making this a challenging, but fun, sacred tune. Carolina Sandell Berg's Swedish folk tune , 'Children of the Heavenly Father,' is beautifully arranged for 4-part mixed voices by Paul Christiansen. Stanley Glarum's 'Sing Praises' is a thrilling exhortation to all the people of the earth to revere God and sing His praises. The echo effects should brought out as though the people were responding to the bidding the psalmist. The anthem is suitable for Thanksgiving or general services

And now for something completely different for Advent! So much of our traditional music for the season of waiting is slow and in a minor key. The emphasis is on longing and despair. John Parker and David Lantz break the mold with 'Great Day A-Comin,' an exuberant neo-spiritual, Great Day A-Comin’. Focusing on the joy to come, this exciting a cappella number simply bubbles over with good cheer. A spirited change for the later weeks of Advent. Donald Moore's 4 part arrangement of 'Beautiful Savior' is a beautiful take on the Silesian melody, a great worship piece! 'Wonderful Savior' is a simple, yet expressive arrangement of the familiar hymn tune, BENTON HARBOR. Careful stepwise voice leading aids in learning and creates a seamless harmonic effect. The distinctive second verse set in minor is quite effective. For Lent, Holy Week, or as preparation for a time of prayer, this beloved hymn anthem is very moving. Spirited and sparkling, Jay Althouse’s 'Alleluia' is the perfect all-occasion octavo. Available in women’s or SATB voicings, this cheerful a cappella anthem is appropriate for church or school use, in concert, contest, festival, or worship settings. 'Nearer, My God, to Thee' is lovely and very moving. Pure, pristine harmonies reflect the simple desires of this prayer. Yet as the yearnings intensify with each verse, so do the textures and tone colors of this wonderful a cappella arrangement. The third verse, in particular, has some fabulous dissonances and rhythmic effects.

The fact that it is A Cappella adds greatly to the rich charm of the piece as well as making it highly rewarding to sing. "A Prayer" - This inventive and original composition bestows rich and luminous harmonies to the a cappella choral parts. It is a haunting call for the Lord to save us from sin. This breathtakingly beautiful ACDA award-winning composition, "Lux Aeterna," offers rich harmonies in an approachable setting. Works well in both concert and memorial settings. An optional soprano solo completes this spellbinding work. Matthew Harrisbrings us this simple and eloquent new setting of the well-known prayer, "Ave Maria." Based on Elgar's own piano transcription of his Enigma Variations, the rich harmonies and depth of expression of this setting of "Agnus Dei" with sacred text may be performed by a variety of choirs. Ave Maria (Joan Szymko) |
Joan Szymko's 3 part arrangement of 'Ave Maria' is beautiful and moving. It is simple, yet profound. Her arrangement also comes with a helpful phonunciation and translation guide. The text of the 'Magnificat' depicts the scene when the Angel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her of the good news that she has been chosen to bear the son of God. This touching moment is captured in the opening plainchant and polyphony, Mary's joy is unveiled in the ensuing dance-like figuration which follows. Another gem by Joan Symko, Hodie, opens with the soprano section, adding the rest of the choir at measure 12. This vigorous take on the Vespers Aniphon is a great addition to your womens choir's holiday concert. David V. Montoya's 'Ave Maria' is written for 4 part women's voices and it is not to be missed. A contemporary version in english, this arrangement's soprano line could easily lend itself well to either a soloist or a group of sopranos. J. Edmund Hughes' arrangement of 'Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming' is quite different than most arrangements of this tune out there. It incorporates a nice solo in the alto line to be sung inbetween the typical verses. The 'background vocals' singing the typical harmonies start out with 3 parts, then grow to 6 parts by the end. This is an exquisite arrangement!

'Alleluia' was commissioned for performance at the 1999 National ACDA Convention. A hushed chant is woven into dramatic musical lines and lush harmonies that later fade to an ending of quiet splendor. With the grandeur of a more challenging work, this piece sings easily, enabling accessibility to a variety of performing groups. Spevacek has 'Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming' in a sensitive, transparent fashion with lush harmonies and textual contrasts. 'A Jubilant Gloria' is an exceptional work that offers driving rhythmic excitement from its fanfare-like opening to its exhilarating conclusion. This sophisticated piece sings easily and sounds gloriously full.

The Cornish folk tune 'The Holy Bears a Berry,' alternates between men and women's voices. Solo sections may be sung by small groups. This arrangement is best for church, community, or school choirs. 'Ding Dong! Merrily on High' is a vigorous 8 part a cappella piece with constant vocal imitation of bells. Elaborate counterpoint and canonic devices. Completely diatonic, harmonically and melodically conservative. Rhythmic ostinatos give non-stop energy leading to dazzling finish. 'Gloria in Excelsis Deo' begins and ends with a rhythmic and exciting statement of the Gloria text. The middle section is tranquil and effectively emotes the feeling of peace that is being presented in the text. The final statement is one of peace. Challenging, but well worth the work. Van's arrangement of 'Once in Royal David's City.' is an introspective and reflective setting of this Christmas standard. The composer includes many of the elements that have become associated with this hymn. This arrangement begins with either a treble solo, or with all sopranos, it then broadens into a rich setting of the following stanzas, and ends with a hushed treatment of the text “And our eyes at last shall see him.” May be used in worship or concerts. 'Angels We have Heard on High' is a beautiful and energetic arrangement that is appropriate for both worship and concert use. The piece is written in a unique way that incorporates vocal accompaniments that are shared between men's and women's voices. Includes soaring descants throughout. Composed in the Australian winter of 2005, 'Ave Maria' was written by Jacobs in response to the death of a close friend’s mother. Her passion for Renaissance music influenced many aspects of the piece, particularly text, and the decision to set it for two a cappella choirs.
