THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER - ARRANGED BY DERRIC JOHNSON

MY COUNTRY 'TIS OF THEE - ARRANGED BY DERRIC JOHNSON

For a new country, America has a lot of old music that most Americans grew up hearing and loving. Many of these songs go back decades, some even a century or two. They exude patriotic Americana. They’re the backbone of the 4th of July parades. And some of these performances are so beautiful, they’ll bring tears to your eyes. Whether it’s the Boys’ Choir of Harlem singing their passionate response to 9/11, or Disney’s Voices of Liberty singing about being back home in Indiana, these recordings will make you proud to be an American – even if you’re not one!

Derric Johnson is a well known arranger of Americana and his genius is spotlighted 6 times on this collection including 'America the Beautiful', 'Shenandoah', 'The Star Spangled Banner', and 'Oh, Suzanna'. Giving a little room for others arrangers such as Robert Shaw's 'Set Down Servant' and Pat Ballard's 'Mr. Sandman' is necessary, as they are also quite enjoyable. Impressions are made with the simplicity of these recordings, yet coupled with the echoing sound of a Cathedral gives the feeling of wholeness and serenity. The voices of the Acappella Singers are smooth, crisp and clear with the talented direction of Ronald Boender.

This acclaimed quartet is one of America's most popular vocal groups having performed in 42 states over the past 10 years. Often the special guest artist at barbershop concerts, these former International Barbershop Champions have expanded upon this genre and now perform in a variety of styles in large venues across the country. They have developed an enthustiastic following with fans of vocal harmony and are widely considered to be one of the very best vocal groups performing today.
It was two years after their first album that this international champion quartet produced this a cappella classic. On Stars & Stripes the same perfectly pitched close harmonies are in full bloom but the repertoire is expanded considerably. There is a rousing selection of patriotic songs, "The Stars and Stripes Forever," "The Star Spangled Banner," "God Bless The USA" and more! In the middle of the lineup we find a touch of jazz and then barberwop on "Unchained Melody." Acoustix is joined by Panache, the 1990 Queens of Harmony, for two songs on which they sing quartet duets. They do a chills up the back rendition of "This Is The Moment" just before closing with "So Many Voices Sing America's Song" on which they are joined by The American Pops Orchestra and The Vocal Majority.

Derric Johnson is the director of the "Voices Of Liberty," the ten-voice ensemble that performs at Walt Disney World. This collection, featuring the Voices themselves, is as unabashedly and straightforwardly patriotic as it is possible to be, with songs such as "This Land Is Your Land," "America, The Beautiful" and "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" on the set list. The CD's opener, "Golden Dream," is the musical equivalent of a twelve-gun salute, if for nothing other than its finale, which climbs up the scale chromatically to dizzying heights. The challenging arrangements and the virtuosity of the performances - excellent across the board - are a complement to the sometimes grave lyrical content, which emphasizes all-American values with unmitigated confidence. Whatever one's opinions on that score, musically "A Cappella Americana" is great

Standard "America The Beautiful" is scored SATB w/solo (alto or baritone), with a 12/8 groove. George M. Cohan's "Yankee Doodel Dandy" is a driving swing, with unexpected syncopations and some whistling with an SSATB voicing. Then there's Neil Diamond's "(Coming to) America" - a contemporary ode to our country of immigrants (SSATB). Lee Greenwood's modern anthem "God Bless The USA" is designed to send shivers down the spines and bring audiences to their feet. And finally, you can rock out to the Steve Miller Band chart "Living In The USA" - SSAB w/tenor solo - with a decidedly more jaundiced view of American culture. A little something for everyone!

SATB

Sing some cool arrangements of the National athem! Beginning with a beautiful unison, Tsunenori 'Lee' Abe's arrangement of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' goes into rich harmony without going too far away from the original. Mark Burnell's 'Star Spangled Banner' is an adventurous a cappella version as performed by Cooler by the Lake for the Chicago Bulls and White Sox. Kerry Marsh's 'Star Spangled Banner' uses some modal re-harmonization, some slight meter shifts and has a rousing finish, with some surprises. This chart sounds harder to sing than it is, as the voice leading is very logical and smooth but the chords are wonderful. Jason Heald's 'The Star-Spangled Banner' is a swinging version of the true "old standard". This is a very rhythmic a cappella SATB arrangement with a strong gospel feel. The chart opens with a soprano solo and concludes with bold sophisticated harmonies. A terrific opener or closer for any concert or event! Also included is another spectacular 'Star Spangled Banner' and a beautiful arrangement of 'America The Beautiful' by New York Voices' singer/arranger, Darmon Meader.
