The spirituals in this collection have become mainstays in the body of American male chorus literature. Their arrangers, Marshall Bartholomew and Fenno Heath, were conductors of the Yale Glee Club, one of the groups that was central in creating and sustaining the tradition of collegiate male choir singing in America.
