Founded in 1923, the BGSU (Ohio) Men's Chorus (formerly the Men's Glee Club) has had its ups and downs (disbanding during WWII as choristers went off to war, for instance), but now, under the direction of renowned conductor William Skoog, the Chorus tours and performs in concert regularly. "Lifted in Song" is a collection of 22 varied songs, beginning with several spiritual tunes, "Exultate Jussti in Domino," Handel's "Praise the Lord," Jacob Arcadelt's "Ave Maria," Joseph Martin's "Toccata of Praise," "Prayer of the Children," "Joshua," "Christmas Comes Anew" and the title tune. Following that are Martin's "Who Are the Brave," Ron Jeffers' "A Drinking Song" and "A Plea For Old Friends," Timothy Takach's "She Moved Through The Fair," "Songs From Matengo Folktales" the King's Singers' a cappella "Jenk's Vegetable Compound," and Smokey Robinson's a cappella "Who's Lovin' You." Several songs are lightly accompanied. "Lifted" is full of good stuff, and goes a long way to uphold the BGSU's longstanding tradition as "America's Finest Singing Machine!" |
