On El Gran Barroco, Coro Exaudi teams up with the Peruvian ensemble Capilla Virreinal, led by Andrés Santa Maria. Together, the groups explore the Baroque music of Latin America. The composers featured on this disc range from those who never went to the New World, but whose works were widely performed there (Carlos Patiqo), Americanised Spaniards like Araujo, and Americans like Moraes Pedrozo, whose Te Deum is perhaps the high point of this recording. The a cappella processional hymn Hanaq Pachaq (Track 1), which is sung in the Incan language Quechua, is hauntingly beautiful. Baroque music from Latin America is not often performed so every opportunity to hear it should be taken. |
