At Decorah, Iowa's Luther College, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church, music is one of the strongest traditions. The Christmas festival, "Arise, Your Light Has Come" was presented over 4 days in December of 2002 and featured Cantorei, Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Norsemen, Nordic Choir, Pike Kor and Children's Choir, the Luther College Symphony Orchestra and the College Organist. 20 pieces, most accompanied, and it's hard to select favorites. The opening piece, the title tune, is stunning, and sets the tone for the triumphant "Joy to the World." Francis Poulenc's "Gloria," Christiansen's "Light Everlasting" Michael Haydn's "Run Ye Shepherds To the Light" and Randall Thompson's a cappella "Nowel," are lovely, as are the gentle "Rocking Carol" and Fissinger's "The Lamb." "And The Glory Of The Lord" from the Messiah, is magnificent, the joyous spiritual "De Mornin' Come," and the tender finale "Hope for Resolution," sung by the Children's Choir, are wonderful. |
