1988 recording of one of England's premier vocal groups. The six King's Singers, who, with the presence of two countertenors, are able to render the full spectrum of vocal ranges, have one of the most immediately recognizable sounds. Selecting works by English composers from the turn-of-the-century up to World War II (sometimes dubbed as a period of 'pastoral' music), including Holst, Finzi, Bridge and Vaughan Williams, one can readily discern the various trends - and countertrends - that were later associated with twentieth-century modernism. Elgar's 'Deep In My Soul' shows the drift toward undefined tonality, whereas Finzi's 'I Have Loved The Flowers That Fade' is polyphonic, and beckons to the past, as much as the present, for its inspiration. |
