A delightful concept: the Swingle Singers do an Irving Berlin theme album! Sign us up! We were able to obtain this European release on import. Released in 1996, there are twenty songs, of which sixteen were previously unreleased in the U.S.. Mostly accompanied, these arrangements really swing, though some, such as "Steppin' Out With My Baby," rely on the Swingles' patented ability to orchestrate using their voices only (save for an effusive solo sax passage). "Let Yourself Go" is a modern interpretation that cuts up the rug with a disco beat; "What'll I Do" is true to its period, conveying the grace and romance of Berlin's early twentieth century with its cultured vocal. Berlin was one of the most successful American - though born in Russia, he came to America when he was five - composers of our era and his influence cannot be overstated. Likewise, the Swingles have had a similar impact on the world of a cappella. |
