Produced by Daryl Runswick / Tokimitsu Nishimura
One of the most popular King's Singers recordings, and for good reason: one of the most accomplished and educated vocal groups performs the songs of the most famous pop band in history, surely a winning combination. In fact, George Martin produced the King's Singers' first record, and this CD was recorded at Abbey Road, strengthening the connection still further. All but two of the arrangements were written for this CD, and the King's Singers indeed interpret these songs uniquely. "Got To Get You Into My Life" is flamboyant and thrilling, sort of a musical Carmen Miranda hat: thudding kick drum, driving horns and huge backing vocals. In contrast, "Girl" is a relaxed sigh, the chords luxuriant, the tempo calm. "A Hard Day's Night" is a mannequin that goes through so many stylistic changes (doo wop, gospel, torch song vamp) that the result defies imagination. A stunning production.
