InVoice, a five piece mixed group, offers nineteen cuts of classic a cappella on this entertaining ‚D, including 'Operator,' 'Boy from NYC' and 'Java Jive.' While of course comparisons to Manhattan Transfer will inevitably occur, by the choice of material alone, in fact InVoice carves out their own territory. Their interpretations show their individuality, as on 'Stormy Weather', which is not delivered as a slow plaintive lament, but rather as a fifties girl group song. 'Operator' is sung with a gospel feel, allowing the lyric, 'get me Jesus on the line,' to resound in a new way. The group tackles Curtis Mayfield's 'It's Alright', anchoring the arrangement with a repeating bass line that really works. For those purists among us we mention that five of the songs have drum accompaniment, and whether that is looked upon with favor is a matter of taste. However, the excellent vocal performances and innovative arrangements carry the day throughout. A definite must listen for fans of vocal jazz. |
