Yes, this CD is everything the group's name implies, and more! Taking on issues as serious as AIDS and as hilarious as the never-ending pursuit of bodies beautiful (their own or someone else's), this quartet is flagrant in its willingness to gore any sacred cow. The only taste they could be accused of having is musical. The arrangements and harmonies, while not innovative, are perfectly respectable and provide a satisfactory backdrop for the lyrical content. "AZT," a parody of the Jackson Five's "ABC," uses the names of HIV medications in a perfect synchronization of words and rhythm. "Impossible Mission" is a paean to Tom Cruise, "Lifesize Jesus" an homage to Karen Carpenter. The "Kinsey Sicks" theme song is an X-rated group mission statement (Dragapella "puts the sin in syncopation"). The Supremes' "Love Child" is fatally lampooned in "Baster Baby Blues." Dragapella's social satire will be a favorite, no matter your orientation! |
