Germany and Switzerland have a vibrant and prolific a cappella scene. From Denzlingen, Germany come the Buddhas, an all-male quintet with a contemporary sound. Covering material from Elvis Costello's "Accidents Will Happen" to Stevie Winwood's "Roll With It," with several originals to sweeten the pot, the group's arrangements and production are honest and immediate. Twelve of the thirteen tracks were recorded live, and indeed the performances are rife with energy and enthusiasm. The Buddhas' greatest asset is the quality of the individual voices; the lead vocals are consistently strong. The Buddah's own "Seven Acres," with it's smoky depth, is particularly memorable, but "29 Ways" and "Whirlpool" go for the jugular as well. The group gets down and rocks through the Doobie Bros. "Long Train Runnin'," with squealing guitars and bass propulsion.
