Dr. James Litton

Widely regarded as one of America's most prominent choral conductors, James Litton is the former Litton-Lodal Music Director of The American Boychoir. He has a distinguished reputation as a specialist in children's choral techniques, reinforcing his standing as respected scholar, dedicated teacher and accomplished musician. Dr. Litton has conducted The American Boychoir in 49 states and in twelve nations in more than 2,000 concerts during his 16 seasons as Music Director. Dr. Litton has conducted choral and orchestral works throughout five continents, and regularly leads workshops and seminars in the United States and abroad.

Dr. Litton served as a Festival Conductor and National Honorary Chairman for the AmericaFest International Singing Festival for Men and Boys, where The American Boychoir held the position of Artists-in-Residence during the summer of 1998.Ê After his appearance at AmericaFest, Dr. Litton appeared as a Guest Conductor of the International Choral Festival in Prague, before leading The American Boychoir on tour in Japan and Taiwan.Ê Other seasons have included appearances with the Berkshire Choral Festival and at Tanglewood, as well as festivals in Denmark, Germany, Latvia, France, Poland, South Korea and South Africa.

Dr. Litton is the founder of a large number of choral groups, including community choral ensembles, college, church and school choirs. He has conducted on more than 40 recordings, including American Boychoir releases on Angel Records and several independently produced albums for other recording labels. Prior to his appointment at The American Boychoir School, Dr. Litton held positions at Westminster Choir College, Princeton Theological Seminary, Virginia Theological Seminary and The University of the South. A former member of the Episcopal ChurchÕs Standing Commission on Church Music, he participated in the preparation and publication of the Episcopal Hymnal, 1982. For 13 years, Dr. Litton was the Organist and Director of Music at St. Bartholomew's Church in New York City, where he now serves as Artistic Consultant.

Dr. Litton has bachelor's and master's degrees from Westminster Choir College of Rider University and is a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music, one of six Americans to receive this honor. Dr. Litton was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of Charleston.
