Kerry Marsh

Director

Kerry Marsh

Kerry Marsh is a composer and arranger specializing in contemporary music for vocal jazz ensembles. In high demand as a commissioned arranger for many of the nation's top educational vocal and instrumental jazz ensembles, Marsh has a large and varied catalog of music performed regularly around the world. Kerry has published arrangements through UNC Jazz Press and Sound Music Publications.

Along with his wife and musical collaborator Julia Dollison, Kerry released his highly ambitious debut album, Vertical Voices: The Music of Maria Schneider, in March 2010 through ArtistShare. Endorsed by the Grammy-winning composer herself and funded largely through fan contributions, the album features Schneider's music as written for her jazz orchestra, but with the horn parts entirely sung, and the rhythm section consisting of Frank Kimbrough, Ben Monder, Jay Anderson and Clarence Penn (all current members of The Maria Schneider Orchestra).

Since 2003, Kerry has directed the vocal jazz ensembles at Sacramento State, and in that time, his ensembles and individual students have earned ten Down Beat Magazine Student Music Awards, distinguishing it as one of the premiere programs in the country. The Sac State vocal jazz ensembles were invited twice to perform at conferences of the International Association for Jazz Education, and were one of fourteen winners of a national search to have a song appear on the Epic Records release: "Ben Folds - College A Cappella". Marsh then worked for Folds as a vocal arranger and background singers director on a twelve-city tour in performances with major symphony orchestras, including the Boston Pops and the Washington National Symphony.

Kerry has recently joined the faculty of The JazzSchool Institute in Berkeley, CA, where he serves as a vocal jazz ensemble director. Marsh is busy year-round as an adjudicator and clinician for jazz festivals and workshops and he serves as a traveling clinician and high school honor vocal jazz ensemble director for the Monterey Jazz Festival. Marsh has directed all-state jazz choirs in California, Arizona, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Wyoming and Illinois and will direct the New York All State Jazz Choir in 2010.

Kerry graduated in 2000 from the University of Kansas with a B.M.E. in Music Education and in 2003 with a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas. Marsh's university training included study with Paris Rutherford, Dan Gailey, Simon Carrington, and Rosana Eckert.

Sacramento State Vocal Jazz Singers : In The Winelight

Review: Jazz Singers/C-Sus (Cal State University, Sacramento) is a 13 member, mixed voice jazz ensemble who show us with "In the Winelight" that they are among the elite collegiate jazz ensembles in the world. The scattish "Sing a Song of Song," the bright, clean harmonies of "Beautiful Love," the moody "Midnight Voyage," the Swing Era classic "That Old Black Magic," the soaring title tune, the bluenote "Yesterdays," the funky "Walk With Me Lord" a jazzy arrangement of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" and a surreal "Love is more thicker than forget"-these songs are all accompanied by a very good jazz group, and all are poised and excellent!

Songlist: Sing A Song of Song, Beautiful Love, Song For The Traveler, A Midnight Voyage, Talking To Myself, That Old Black Magic, In The Winelight, Yesterdays, Walk With Me, Lord, In Your Eyes, Love Is More Thicker Than Forget

Sacramento State Vocal Jazz Singers : It's You

Review: Four different parts of Sacramento (CA) State's dynamic Jazz Studies program, all under the direction of Kerry Marsh, are represented on "It's You," C-Sus, Jazz Singers, Take 6 Repertory Ensemble and a 12-person Rhythm Section, which accompanies most of the 10 tunes. The student personnel of C-Sus changes as the recordings were made in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Favorites here include three written by Kerry Marsh (who also does all the arrangements), the electric "Lee's Summit," moody "Strange New World," and bluenote "So In Love;" the title tune by Kitty Margolis, and two a cappella songs, "Scarborough Fair" and upbeat "I've Got Life." We find ourselves continually impressed by the professionalism, poise and talent of the Sacramento State singers. And we have to credit Director Marsh for the great arrangements and striking original material to be found on these recordings-this is especially true for "It's You!"

Songlist: Lee's Summit, Scarborough Fair, I've Got Life, Strange New World, Never So In Love, It's You, Seven Steps to Heaven, I Want You Back, Please Come Back (To Stay), Travels (Travels On By)

But Beautiful

Sacramento State Vocal Jazz Singers : Pale Blue Dot

Review: Sacramento State's renowned, vibrant Collegiate Jazz program is directed by Kerry Marsh, whose presence is large on "Pale Blue Dot," Marsh's four-part suite for Jazz ensemble, and a tribute to Carl Sagan, astronomer, author and advocate of science and reason. The album features several different configurations of student Jazz vocalists from 2007 to 2008, accompanied by a large Jazz Rhythm Section on all cuts. The first seven tunes, all arranged by Marsh, are covers of standards like Duke Ellington's "In a Mellotone," Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower," Irving Caesar's "Tea for Two," and incongruously but beautifully, a soaring, bluenote arrangement of "Silent Night." The final cuts, the four parts of "Pale Blue Dot," are very strong, particularly Part III, "When the Night is New"- spacy, delicate, moody and powerful.

Songlist: Little Sunflower, Esperanto, In a Mellotone, Tea for Two, Silent Night, Widow's Walk, But Beautiful, Pale Blue Dot (suite)- Part 1: You Are Here, Pale Blue Dot (suite)- Part 2; Sacred Black, Pale Blue Dot (suite)- Part 3; When the Night is New, Pale Blue Dot (suite)- Part 4; Wanderers

Kerry Marsh : A Cappella Jazz for Mixed Voices : Sheet Music : Kerry Marsh :

Kerry Marsh : A Cappella Jazz for Mixed Voices

Review: An original composition, 'Occam's Edge' is an aggressive a cappella chart that will challenge your singers, but is quite attainable. It comes off almost as a fusion tune because of the groove, the stabbing lush chords and quickly moving harmony. A scat solo is featured and a vocal percussionist is important to the performance. An exciting shout section connects the solo section and the head-out. This one is, again, like nothing you've ever heard vocalists sing! Commissioned by Valenica High School, 'His Eye is on the Sparrow' starts out simply as a rubato ballad with a soulful solo, but then adds vocal percussion in a jazz waltz groove. When the vocals come in after a short percussion break, it sounds highly reminiscent of a Take 6 tune with quickly moving harmonies, lots of great dominant sounds and exciting hits in the background vocals. This will surely be a crowd pleaser and a fun and challenging chart to sing. The arrangement of 'Mas Alla,' features a tenor soloist. The wonderful Spanish lyric was written by Pedro Aznar. Some thick and challenging harmony, but an attainable and worthwhile chart for most college vocal jazz groups. A completely new perspective on the great Pat Metheny composition, with 'Unequity Road,' Marsh has transformed a powerfully aggressive and asymmetrical chart into a simple, floating and mesmerizing tribute to a great set of chord changes and a beautiful melody that is almost hidden in Metheny's original performance on Bright Size Life. or vocalists who may not have been exposed to the harmonies of cutting-edge big band writers Maria Schneider, Jim McNeely and Vince Mendoza,'The Big Crunch is a great learning piece. It is also a moody and yet hard-grooving a cappella chart that will provide a fun challenge to your group. A very open solo section is included as well as a nicely crafted shout section that builds to a great climax before leading into the head-out. Vocal percussion is necessary on this chart.

Songlist: His Eye Is On The Sparrow, Occam's Edge, The Big Crunch, Uniquity Road, Mas Alla
