Kinsey Sicks : I Wanna Be A Republican

Review: In their first live concert film The Kinsey Sicks reveal the shocking news: they have gone Republican. In this mock GOP fundraiser, Rachel, Winnie, Trixie and Trampolina, the four gifted singers and comedians who comprise the quartet, defend their conversion to conservatism. They sing - literally! - the praises of corruption, tokenism, greed and all things nuclear (both families and bombs). The film, shot over two nights with five high definition cameras at the Broadway Studios in San Francisco, captures the final performances of the live, touring version of the Kinseys' I WANNA BE A REPUBLICAN stage show which they developed during the 2004 election season. Touring for over a year nationally, as well as in Canada and Mexico, "Republican" was performed not only in major cities, but also in small towns and red states -- to wildly appreciative audiences. A cappella has rarely been funnier!

Ladysmith Black Mambazo : On Tip Toe

Review: If you love world music, or more specifically, the music of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, you are sure to love this academy award nominated documentary. Directed by Eric Simonson and spanning three continents, ON TIP TOE follows the captivating story of South African musician Joseph Shabalala and his unique singing ensemble. Best known on these shores for their innovative support on Paul Simon's Grammy-winning album, Graceland, Mambazo has crafted an extraordinary hybrid of traditional Zulu harmonies and unconventional Western influences, including gospel, ragtime, doo wop and even rock 'n roll. Made up of seven bass voices, a tenor, a male alto and Shabalala as lead vocalist, Mambazo amazingly incorporates the light, syncopated stomping of "Isicathamiya"(meaning "on tip toe"), a style born theough the strains of apartheid. This entertaining and informative documentary traces the fascinating origins of Shabalala's tuneful creations, featuring interviews with Paul Simon and extensive live footage of Mambazo's performances.

Muungano National Choir, Kenya : Missa Luba

Review: In the early 1960's there arrived a recording of the Congolese Mass, Missa Luba which amazed and delighted western audiences. The Muungano National Choir is the latest to bring us a beautiful version of this work. Additionally we are the recipients of another ten Kenyan folk melodies all of which have spiritual messages. Boniface Mganga conducts this internationally acclaimed choir in one of the most beautiful and moving recordings of the Missa Luba ever to come to our shores. You will find that the arrangement of these African melodies came about because of the desire to praise the Lord with heart and soul in a familiar musical style. Drums are an integrated part of the songs and the strong rhythm they provide support the dancing of the singers while performing, allowing an outpouring of body, mind, and spirit...a complete form of worship. Thus it is that you will find most of this recording to be accompanied by percussive elements which merely enhances the real flavor of a fabulous performance. Newly released with an additional DVD of a movie directed by Anthony Howard of the choir performing interspersed with footage as the members of the choir introduce viewers to their native villages and surronding countryside.

Naturally 7 : Live In Berlin

Review: When we last saw and heard Naturally 7 live, they were called "Seven," dressed in matching dark suits and confidently blowing away the Harmony Sweeps Finals competition on a San Rafael stage in 1999. "Live In Berlin" was recorded live at the "Meilenwerk" concert hall in Berlin, March 13th, 2004, and the guys are looking fine, dressed like rap stars at a music awards show, but the story here is the amazing talent of these men, and their music. 12 songs: "Sit Back, Relax" welcomes us in, and Jamal Reed's guitar solo on "BMG (Be My Guest)" is one of the best we've heard. Their opening number at the Finals, "Bless This House," is even better than we remember, as is "Amazing Grace," and a stunning "Simon and Garfunkel Medley" reminds us of their show-stopper "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The good stuff keeps coming with "Say You Love Me," "Back To The Essence," a stunning arrangement of "Another You," the title tune of their second CD, "What Is It," "Have I Ever Told You" and "Music Is The Key." Throughout there is great camera work, close-ups of the group and the appreciative audience. There is some very cool bonus material: "First Time in Japan," "At Telecom," an interview with Nat7 at the hotel lobby, "Photo Gallery" and "Biography." The guys are stars, and this amazing DVD leaves no doubt of that! In Dolby Digital 5.1

Perfect Gentlemen : "Live" In Paradise onsale

Review: The focus in the Barbershop world is excellence in live performance, and all of us in the audience of the 2002 Harmony Sweeps Finals were treated to one of the best, the set of LA's The Perfect Gentlemen. "Live" gives everyone else a chance to join the excited, appreciative audience enjoying the Gentlemen live in concert, at the historic Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu. (This would be a good time to warn purists that there is, not too surprisingly, some ukelele accompaniment in several of the songs). PG classics "Meanest Thing You Ever Did," "They Wrote 'Em in the Good Old Days," "Java Jive," "Room Service" and "I Want You to Be My Baby" all lead up to the Gents' hilarious masterpiece, "Salute to the 20th Century," with costumes, wigs, and musical renditions of "Shine On Harvest Moon" in everything from Barbershop and Dixieland to Blues, Big Band and Doo-Wop to Disco, Techno Punk and Rap. And believe us, you haven't lived until you've seen 4 kind of chubby barbershop guys in sunglasses, NFL jerseys and spats do a devastatingly funny takedown of Rap music. Great stuff!

Songlist: Meanest Thing You Ever Did, They Wrote 'Em In The Good Ol' Days, Java Jive, Room Service, I Want You To Be My Baby, Salute To The 20th Century, Ukulele Lady

Their repertoire also includes Renaissance part-songs, 19th and 20th century compositions and arrangements of contemporary music. These 12 songs, recorded live at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, MN, feature Mattson-arranged winners like "Snow Covers the Valley," Bach's "Jesu, Meine Freude," Burt Bacharach's "Alfie," "Never Let Me Go," Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen's classic "Blues in the Night" and Irving Berlin's "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep." Ward Swingle's "Country Dances" and the Swingle-arranged "Satchmo," Duke Ellington's "Don't Mean A Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing," Anders Edenroth of the Real Group's "Friendship" and Bobby McFerrin's "Jubilee" are other favorites. Great stuff, from the first cut to the last!

Rajaton : Joulu

Review: We've been raving about Finnish mixed sextet Rajaton for their first 5 CDs now, their bright, smooth, poised sound only leaves us wanting to hear more! "Joulu" is a live concert, recorded in Helsinki in 2003, 17 tunes from their Christmas CD "Joulu," which features new songs and new arrangements of traditional Finnish Christmas songs. Watching the six on stage, first dressed all in white and later in the show in matching black and silver outfits, we have to say that their show is as elegant and impressive as any a cappella show we've seen. Some favorites are "Joulu" are the wonderful vocal trumpets on the opening cut "Joululaulu," the exquisite, high-flying "En etsi valtaa, loistoa," "Kulkuset," "Lumisade," the vocal percussion gem "Pukki tietaa, and the only song in English, Lennon/McCartney's "Lady Madonna," (great solos and some mean air-guitar) one of 5 bonus tracks. The solo talents of each of the six are seamlessly presented, for instance with the group walking in a circle and the next in line stepping into a breathtaking solo as another finishes. We of course don't understand Finnish, but we understand poise, and harmony, and blend, and the magic that a talented ensemble at the height of their creative powers can create. And with this DVD we are blessed to be able to watch them do it instead of merely listening!

Songlist: Jouluaulu, Tonttu, Lumisade, Talvi-iltana, Joulun Neiet, Jouluyo Joulayo, Heinilla Harkien Kaukalon, Ja Neitsyt Pikku Poijuttansa, En Etsi Valtaa, Loistoa, Arkihuolesi Kaikki Heita, Pukki Tietaa, Kulkuset, Varpunen Jouluaamuna, Ketun Jouluaulu, Joululaulu, Tiernapojat, Tahtilaulu

Red Army Choir : Live In Paris

Review: Since its humble beginnings in the first decade of Stalin's rule, to performing over 1500 concerts at the frontlines in WWII, bolstering the besieged Russian troops' resolve, to the international acclaim that has followed them since the fall of the Iron Curtain, the Red Army Choir is arguably the world's leading and most visual choral/dance ensemble. "Live in Paris" is a stunning group of 25 (actually 27, with bonus tracks "Silent Night" and "Jingle Bells") pieces, from the testosterone-soaked "Russian National Anthem," "Oh Fields My Fields," "The Sacred War" (an apt anthem for a people who stopped the Nazi war machine in its bloody tracks), "Kalinka" and "On the Road" (A Soldier's Song); to dramatic and colorful dance numbers like "The Cossack Dance," "The Navy Dance" (where women first appear onstage), the high-kicking "Zaporoque's Cossacks" and "The Festival March" this is powerful, moving stuff throughout. Opera-quality Tenor and Baritone soloists, an orchestra that includes multiple balalaikas and accordions, and song selections like "Dark Eyes," "The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves," "The Bandit's Chorus," "The March of the Toreadors," "Katioucha" and "Moscow Nights;" these are the soul of heroic romanticism. The bottom line: "Live in Paris" is great entertainment on many levels!

Songlist: The Russian National Anthem, Oh Fields My Fields (Song of the Plains), The Sacred War, In The Sunny Clearing, Kalinka, The Cossack Dance, We Sing To Thee, On The Road (A Soldier's Song), Smuglianka, A partisan's Song, Along The Peterskaya Road, Dark Eyes, The Navy Dance, The Chorus Of The Hebrew Slaves, The Bandit's Chorus, Spanish Medley: Amapola/Valencia/Granada, Zaporogue's Cossacks, Excerpt from "Boris Godounov", The March Of The Toreadors, Nessun Dorma, Di Quella Pira, The Festival March, Katioucha, Moscow nights (Midnight In Moscow), Silent Night, Jingle Bells

Soweto Gospel Choir : Live at the Nelson Mandela Theater

Review: In their five-year existence, the Soweto Gospel Choir has become a world-wide sensation, winning two Grammy Awards and selling out concert halls around the world. This DVD captures all the spontaneity and infectious spirit that makes their live appearances an unforgettable experience. This multitalented group has exploded onto the world music scene, wowing audiences with its virtuosity and passion. Drawn primarily from the churches and communities of South Africa's most famous township, the choir mixes earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, drumming, dancing, and irrepressible charisma for an experience that lifts the soul and stuns the senses. St John's College Choir, Cambridge : Ave Verum - Popular Choral Classics

Review: The fruitful development of the English Anthem in the 20th century was made possible, some say, by the interest in the genre from composers who were unencumbered by church appointment. The Victorian flowering of English Anthems by Stanford was passed on to his student and successor at Cambridge, Wood, and other students Bainton, Ireland, Harris and Howells. Britten studied under Ireland at the Royal College of Music, and others studied at Oxbridge, Oxford and Cambridge. Stephen Cleobury directs the acclaimed 33-member, all male Choir of King's College in their renditions of these 13 pieces. Charles Wood's "Hail, gladdening light," Edgar Bainton's soaring "And I saw a new heaven," John Ireland's "Greater love hath no man," Wm. Harris' "Faire is the heaven," Edward Naylor's "Vox dicentis: Clama," Britten's "A Hymn of St. Columbia," Leighton's "Let all the world in every corner sing"... this is not easily performed material, but the Choir effortlessly reaches the high scales and challenging harmonies. Light organ accompaniment on most songs, but the focus is on the voices. Dramatic, operatic compositions wonderfully performed by one of England's finest choirs.

Songlist: Ave Verum, Insanae et vanae curae , How lovely aree Thy dwellings , Ave verum , Ave maris stella , Locus iste, Denn er hat seinen Engeln , Where Thou reignest , Bring us, O Lord God, O! For a closer walk with God , Crucifixus , Pie Jesu Domini , O salutaris hostia , Cantique de Jean Racine, Thou, O God, art praiset , Hymn of the Cherubim , Ave Maria, Panis angelicus, Ave verum, Thou will keep him (Samuel Sebastian Wesley)

St John's College Choir, Cambridge : Poulenc: Stabat Mater

Review: Poulenc wrote his Stabat Mater, a hauntingly passionate work, after visiting the sacred shrine of the Black Madonna of Rocamadour. Poulenc's journey profoundly changed his life and work as a composer. Like the Stabat Mater, the Litanies a la Vierge Noir is also inspired by the Black Virgin of Rocamadour. Recorded here in an unrivalled performance by the combined choirs of St. John's, Clare and Gonville and Caius Colleges, Cambridge, with the BBC Philharmonic with soprano Judith Howarth.

Songlist: Stabat mater dolorosa , Cujus animam gementem, O quam tristis, Quae moerebat, Quis est homo, Vidit suum, Eja mater, Fac ut ardeat, Sancta mater, Fac ut portem, Inflammatus et accensus, Quando corpus, Litanies a La Vierge Noire, Timor Et Tremor, Vinea Mea Electa , Tenebrae Factae Sunt, Tristis Est Anima Mea

St. Olaf Choir : Christmas in Norway

Review: This special is the seventh in a popular series of PBS holiday concerts that have featured the St. Olaf Choir. The Christmas concert commemorates the centennial of Norway's independence and the cultural roots of St. Olaf College, founded in 1874 by Norwegian Lutheran immigrants. Singing in the majestic, 900-year-old Trondheim Cathedral was a highlight for the internationally known St. Olaf Choir, which has performed in prestigious music venues around the world since its founding in 1912 by F. Christiansen established the choir's distinctive style of a cappella singing, a tradition carried on today by artistic director and conductor-and St. Olaf College alumnus-Anton Armstrong.

St. Olaf Choir : Love Divine Illume Our Darkness

Review: The St. Olaf Choir was formed in 1911 by Dr. F Melius Christiansen, a Norwegian immigrant. So began a tradition of a cappella choral sacred music that remains strong and vital today. 23 pieces, such songs as Edward Elgar's "Adagio," Christiansen's "Light Everlasting," and "The Song Of Peace," Bartholdi's "There Shall Be A Star," Paulus' "Pilgrim's Hymn," Daniel Gawthrop's "Mary Speaks," Paul Lohman's "What Child," our friend Moses Hogan's arrangement of "This Little Light of Mine," Williams' "Dona Nobis Pacem," Hovland's "Stay With Us" and "Beautiful Savior." The music is that of angels, and the focus of this wonderful CD is what the holiday is all about, the birth of Christ. Excellent!

St. Olaf Choir : Where Peace and Love and Hope Abide

Review: F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the Music Department at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, planned and directed the first St. Olaf Christmas Festival in 1912. Over the next 96 years the Festival has grown to include, as individual groups and as a massed ensemble, the St. Olaf Choir, the St. Olaf Orchestra, the St. Olaf Cantorei, The Manitou Singers and the Viking Chorus and Chapel Choir. The result of the coming together of all this huge and joyous talent easily fills two CDs, 30 pieces with some narration that tell the story of Christmas, beginning with the all-instrumental "Messiah, Prince of Peace" and ending with F. Melius' gorgeous "Beautiful Savior." It's hard to pick favorites, but "For Unto Us a Child is Born" from Handel's "Messiah," Steven Sametz' "Noel!," Carl Schalk's "Before the Marvel of This Night," Donald Fraser's "This Christmastide" (Jessye's Carol), the 6-part medley "Carols for the Choirs" arranged by John Ferguson, F. Melius' lovely "Lullaby on Christmas Eve" and Arthur Honegger's "And God Said: One Day Shall Dawn" (King David) come easily to mind.

Songlist: PBS Introduction, The Song of Peace, Messiah, Prince of Peace (Trinity Canticles), Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, For Unto Us A Child is Born (Messiah), In Terra Pax (Excerpt), Before the Marvel of this Night, Gloria, In Thee is Gladness, The Christmastide (Jessye's Carol), Conductors' And Students' Comments, Hark! Standards : Give Me Some More

Review: It's great for us to cue up "Give Me Some More," and once again be blown away by the live show of Quinn, Nicholas, Nathan, Morgan and Jordan, the brothers from Idaho who twice nearly won the Harmony Sweepstakes Finals. Not only can we sit in with the lucky, up-close Nashville audience, but we get to sit down with the guys after a song and hear them talk about their creative process, how they came to choose, arrange or write a song, and see how passionate they feel about their music. The Standards' live show has only grown more entertaining and polished from their years of touring and live concerts. There are nine cuts here, all a cappella, and all of them energetically choreographed. Our favorites are the intro title tune "Give Me Some More," "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," a rockin', sing-along arrangement of Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl," a sweet cover of Bill Withers' "Lean On Me," a very fun, audience-participation cover of the Motown hit "Just My Imagination," Smoky Robinson's anthem "My Girl," the high-energy country rocker "I Got a Feelin'," a totally jungle arrangement of the Doo-Wop anthem "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," the jazzy, surprising "Single Grain of Sand" and closing with a surprising group-written and choreographed original, "Dance of the Mamba" with black lights and day-glow costumes that will knock your socks off! Wait a minute, we picked every song-this reminds us of why we love The Standards, one of the most fun live shows in the business, wonderful harmonies, strong vocal percussion, top-drawer leads, cool choreography. "Give Us Some More!"

Songlist: Give Me Some More, Put A Little Love In Your Heart, Lean On Me, I'm In A Hurry, Brown Eyed Girl, Just My Imagination, I Got A Feellin', Lion Sleeps Tonight, Single Grain of Sand, Dance of the Mamba, Group interviews
