Concert A Cappella DVDs

Sometimes, as much as we'd love to see a favorite group live in concert, we can't - the group may not be touring near us, or may not be touring at all anymore. Sometimes it's something as simple as the show being sold out. But thanks to the new trend of groups releasing concert videos, it doesn't matter anymore! You can take these amazing groups home with you and watch the concerts in your living room, over and over. What could possibly be better?

St. Olaf Choir : Where Peace and Love and Hope Abide

Review: F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the Music Department at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, planned and directed the first St. Olaf Christmas Festival in 1912. Over the next 96 years the Festival has grown to include, as individual groups and as a massed ensemble, the St. Olaf Choir, the St. Olaf Orchestra, the St. Olaf Cantorei, The Manitou Singers and the Viking Chorus and Chapel Choir. The result of the coming together of all this huge and joyous talent easily fills two CDs, 30 pieces with some narration that tell the story of Christmas, beginning with the all-instrumental "Messiah, Prince of Peace" and ending with F. Melius' gorgeous "Beautiful Savior." It's hard to pick favorites, but "For Unto Us a Child is Born" from Handel's "Messiah," Steven Sametz' "Noel!," Carl Schalk's "Before the Marvel of This Night," Donald Fraser's "This Christmastide" (Jessye's Carol), the 6-part medley "Carols for the Choirs" arranged by John Ferguson, F. Melius' lovely "Lullaby on Christmas Eve" and Arthur Honegger's "And God Said: One Day Shall Dawn" (King David) come easily to mind.

Songlist: PBS Introduction, The Song of Peace, Messiah, Prince of Peace (Trinity Canticles), Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, For Unto Us A Child is Born (Messiah), In Terra Pax (Excerpt), Before the Marvel of this Night, Gloria, In Thee is Gladness, The Christmastide (Jessye's Carol), Conductors' And Students' Comments, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Noel!, Ding, Dong! Merrily on High, Glories Ring, Carols for the Choirs: He Came Down tha We May Have Love, Carols for the Choirs: Love Has Come, Carols for the Choirs: On Christmas Night, Carols for the Choirs: Toda La Tierra (All Earth Is Hopeful), Carols for the Choirs: Jeg er Sa Glad (I Am So Glad), Carols for the Choirs: Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht (Silent Night, Holy Night), Joy to the World, And God Said: One Day Shall Dawn (King David), Beautiful Savior

Standards : Give Me Some More

Review: It's great for us to cue up "Give Me Some More," and once again be blown away by the live show of Quinn, Nicholas, Nathan, Morgan and Jordan, the brothers from Idaho who twice nearly won the Harmony Sweepstakes Finals. Not only can we sit in with the lucky, up-close Nashville audience, but we get to sit down with the guys after a song and hear them talk about their creative process, how they came to choose, arrange or write a song, and see how passionate they feel about their music. The Standards' live show has only grown more entertaining and polished from their years of touring and live concerts. There are nine cuts here, all a cappella, and all of them energetically choreographed. Our favorites are the intro title tune "Give Me Some More," "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," a rockin', sing-along arrangement of Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl," a sweet cover of Bill Withers' "Lean On Me," a very fun, audience-participation cover of the Motown hit "Just My Imagination," Smoky Robinson's anthem "My Girl," the high-energy country rocker "I Got a Feelin'," a totally jungle arrangement of the Doo-Wop anthem "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," the jazzy, surprising "Single Grain of Sand" and closing with a surprising group-written and choreographed original, "Dance of the Mamba" with black lights and day-glow costumes that will knock your socks off! Wait a minute, we picked every song-this reminds us of why we love The Standards, one of the most fun live shows in the business, wonderful harmonies, strong vocal percussion, top-drawer leads, cool choreography. "Give Us Some More!"

Songlist: Give Me Some More, Put A Little Love In Your Heart, Lean On Me, I'm In A Hurry, Brown Eyed Girl, Just My Imagination, I Got A Feellin', Lion Sleeps Tonight, Single Grain of Sand, Dance of the Mamba, Group interviews

Storm Front : Free as a Breeze

Review: Famed videographer Chad Guyton and his 7-man camera crew followed one of the best Barbershop groups in the world, BHS International Anaheim Bronze medalists Storm Front, around for four days in January, 2009 during one of the largest Youth Harmony Festivals in the U.S., sponsored by BYU-Idaho, attended by over 1,000 kids. Storm Front was the headliner, and we see over two hours of live cuts from the stage, as well as very funny outtakes. Listen to favorites such as "Poor Wayfarin' Stranger," "GuiTarzan," "The 12 Days of Christmas" and the showstopping "Bugler's Holiday." This is Barbershop at its best, and the "Behind the Curtain" special feature is a must-see!

Storm Front : The Road to Gold

Review: This is the live DVD of Storm Front's "The Road to Gold!", which we were just raving about in our review above. It contains the exact same live 6-song Finals performances by Storm Front from 2008, 2009 and 2010 when their wonderful blending of humor and harmony won them Gold Medals! Why should you get the DVD, you might ask, when you already have the CD? Well, there were a number of places on the CD where there was silence, but the guys were doing something and the audience was laughing hysterically. On the DVD, like the audiences, we could see everything these very funny guys were doing, so you'll also want to get the DVD. Enough said!

Various Artists : Countertenors

Review: An LWT South Bank Show, presented by Melvyn Bragg, exploring the phenomenon of countertenor singing With its unique, soaring beauty, the high male voice is today enjoying a huge resurgence in popularity. Heirs to the celebrated castrati of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, today's countertenors produce their voices by wholly natural means. In this program international stars Michael Chance, Andreas Scholl and James Bowman, as well as pop star Jimmy Somerville, shed light on the appeal of the male falsetto. Meanwhile, experts such as Michael White place today's countertenors in their historical context. What emerges is a compelling portrayal of an unmistakable vocal style, rooted in church and operatic tradition, yet completely up-to-date, resonating louder today than at any time in the last two hundred years. Following the South Bank Show is a 70-minute program of specially recorded performance material, showcasing the extraordinary talents of today's most popular countertenors.

Various Artists : The Doo Wop Sound

Review: This beautifully-done DVD is like a History Channel documentary on the Doo-Wop phenomenon of the 1950s and 60s, starting with its streetcorner roots in cities like NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore and SF, and progressing into the recording and performance mainstream of American culture. Along the way we hear fascinating interviews with people like Ronnie (I) Italiano, DJs Don K. King and Bobby Jay, Louis Lymon (Frankie's Brother and a star in his own right), Pookie Hudson of the Spaniels (who wrote "Goodnight, Sweetheart" to his first love, not to write a hit), Earl "Speedo" Carroll of the Cadillacs, and Arlene Smith of the Chantels (who talks about being 12 years old when they scored their first hit with "Maybe"). We hear about and see vintage footage of the first Doo-Wop sex symbol, Sonny Till, The Ravens singing what arguably is the first Doo-Wop song, "Count Every Star," and the 1940s roots groups, The Deep River Boys, the butter-smooth Mills Bros. and SF's Golden Gate Quartet. We hear why and how a cappella, nonsense syllables and silly lyrics were used by poor young singers to create a full sound and "get noticed," the bombshell effect on the recording industry of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" ... I could rave on and on here, but I'll just give you the Chapter headings to give you a taste of what's here: "The Early Years," "Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers," "Romance and Innocence," "The Urban Streets," "The Girl Groups," "The Tour Bus" (which goes into the racism the mostly Northern groups encountered in the South), "The Business of Doo-Wop," "The Cadillacs" and "The End of An Era." Lots of great vintage footage here, of singers, cities, recording studios, live performances with star-studded playbills in lights-this is a sumptuous feast for the a cappella, R&B and pop music fan, as well as anyone who is interested in the amazing cultural history of the 50s and 60s. Enough said--"The Doo-Wop Sound" is a winner from beginning to end!

Songlist: The Early Years, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Romance and Innocence, The Urban Streets, The Girl Groups, The Tour Bus, The Business of Doo Wop, The Cadillacs, The End of an Era

Various Artists : The Singing Revolution

Review: Most people don't think about singing when they think about revolution. But song was the weapon of choice when Estonians sought to free themselves from decades of Soviet occupation. The Singing Revolution is an inspiring account of one nation's dramatic rebirth. It is the story of humankind's irrepressible drive for freedom and self-determination. Hundreds of thousands of people faced down their oppressors... armed only with hope, truth and song. Recommended.

Vienna Boys Choir : A Mozart Celebration

Review: This is a beautiful DVD of a concert in Vienna that was part of a series of events entitled "Sacred Mozart" organized by the Wiener Mozartjahr 2006, where all of Mozart's works were performed in various city churches. The festive highlight was this concert, presented in St. Stephen's Cathedral on Jan. 27, 2006, the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, when it was broadcast worldwide. St. Stephen's is where Mozart married Constanze Weber in 1782, where one of his sons was baptized, and where the blessing took place after his death. At the heart of this selection of sacred music is the majestic "Missa in C Major K.317" of 1779, better known as the "Coronation Mass." The "Church Sonata in C major, K.278," "Graduale Sancta Maria, mater Dei, K.273," "Ave verum corpus, K.618" and "Litaniae Lauretanae, K.195" are some of our favorite pieces by the master composer performed here. The sweet voices of the Vienna Boys' Choir are the angels make this powerful sacred music soar up into the wonderful acoustics of St. Stephen's. This DVD places us in the audience of this very special and significant event and reminds us of Mozart's unique genius.

Songlist: Church Sonata In C Major, Mass In C Minor, Graduale " Sancta Maria, Mater Dei", Coronation Mass In C Major, Ave Verum Corpus, Litaniae Lauretanae, Church Sonata In C Major
