Christmas Vocal Jazz music

Christmas music is a genre of its own, but one of the great things about holiday tunes is that they can be sung in almost any style and genre, too. You've heard many of these classics before, you've probably even sung most of them, but you've never heard or sung them like this! And that's not even going into the beauty of the Christmas originals some of these terrific groups have written. Whether you choose to explore the work of a vocal jazz group you're not familiar with, or revisit a group you already know that you love, you'll find some luscious sounds with which to wrap yourself in a holiday spirit here.

An Octave Above : Come on and Take a Sleigh Ride! out of print

Review: "Sleigh Ride" is the second release from talented mixed-voice (4 men, 4 women) a cappella octet An Octave Above, who were 1st runner-up at the 2005 Chicago Harmony Sweeps Regionals. The group has been gaining fans with live performances at many Chicago venues, and this Christmas album shows off some of their cutting-edge arrangements and tight, jazzy harmonies. 12 songs, some of our favorites are the opening cut "Sleigh Ride," a moody, jazzy "What Child is This" (with a fine solo by Debra), a richly harmonized "Away in a Manger," a bluesy, funky "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen," "Mary Did You Know" (with Melinda's sweet lead), a surreal, '30s-retro "Toyland," a richly Italianesque "Gesu Bambino," a nicely-arranged "O Holy Night," a classic "Silent Night," and an upbeat "We Three Kings" with tight vocal percussion by Scott. Good fun stuff from Chicago sure to brighten your holidays!

Songlist: Sleigh Ride, What Child is This?, Away in a Manger, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Mary, Did You Know?, Toyland, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, Gesu Bambino, O Holy Night, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, Silent Night, We Three Kings

Beachfront Property : A Beachfront Christmas

Review: The Beachfront Property septet bundles up for the wintry chill with these dozen accompanied holiday classics, performed in elegant supper-club style. Members take turns soloing over chord voicings that lend themselves to comparison with the Singers Unlimited; the arrangements, (many written by Michele Weir, of Phil Mattson's P.M. Singers), can be tricky! "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer," featuring the pitter-patter of reindeer feet and a presto descending motive, varies its rhythmic accents and tempo throughout. "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" has a signature walking bass, setting a relaxed four in conjunction with the lyric. In short, Santa, prepare to swing with style!

Songlist: The Christmas Song"/"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Christmas Time is Here, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, O Come All Ye Faithful, Sleigh Ride, I'll Be Home for Christmas, Here Comes Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, God Rest Ye Merry Gentelmen, Away in a Manger, Silent Night, Wonderful Peace

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : 'Twas The Night Before Christmas

Review: For many years Waring and his Pennsylvanians entertained America with radio and tv broadcasts, as well as stage shows and a multitude of recordings. Culled from the Waring archives, the spontaneity and energy of these live recordings comes through from the first cut. Featured are famous Pennsylvanian soloists and the incomparable Waring Glee Club on these 21 wonderful (all big band accompanied) songs of Christmas. We can't really pick favorites here. The jazzy "Jingle Bells" perhaps, or the Teen Trio's solo on "Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer" that segues into manic sound-effect silliness." Certainly the "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow Medley," Frank Davis' soulful solo on "One for the Little Bitty Baby," and Jack Best and Gordon Goodman on "Twas the Night Before Christmas." Oh, and we have to include Jane Wilson's solos on "Away In A Manger" and "Cantique De Noel" (Oh Holy Night). The bottom line is, this is great, classic entertainment by, in our opinion, the premier choral organization of all time. Christmas music just doesn't get any better than this!

Songlist: Opening: I Hear Music, Jingle Bells, Christmas Was Meant For Children, Santa Claus is Comin' To Town, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, One For The Little Bitty Baby, Medley (Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow, The Sleigh, Winter Wonderland), White Christmas, The Christmas Song, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, Medley (Adeste Fidelis, The First Noel, Carol Of The Bells), Beautiful Savior, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentleman, The Twelve Days Of Christmas, Rise Up Shepard And Foller, Oh Gathering Clouds, Behold That Star, Medley Of English Carols (Suzzani, Coventry Carol, Gloucestershire Wassail), Away In A Manger, Cantique De Noel (Oh Holy Night), Silent Night/Come Unto Him, Closing Sleep

Groove For Thought : Songs of Good Cheer out of print

Review: Wow no wonder this fabulous vocal jazz group were National Champions of the Harmony Sweepstakes and finalists on the Sing-Off TV show! The listener is grabbed immediately by the amazing opening track Carol Of The Bells and the highly innovative arrangements and stellar vocals takes you on a Holiday harmony joy ride. It is so refreshing to hear fresh interpretations of these Christmas songs and there is never a dull moment. Mostly a cappella with occasional light accompaniment this is a recording that vocal jazz fans will play season after season.

Songlist: Carol of the Bells, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, O Holy Night, Christmas Time Is Here, We Three Kings / O Come, O Come Emmanuel, My Favorite Things, Breath of Heaven, O Come All Ye Faithful, Silent Night, The First Noel, Angels We Have Heard on High

Idea of North : This Christmas

Review: We will never forget the way these two men and two women from Australia, members of Vocal Jazz group The Idea of North, whose reputation as the best a cappella group in Australia preceded them, strode onto the stage of the 2003 Harmony Sweeps National Finals in San Rafael. They would be the very last to perform a 12-minute set, and the regional winners from around the country, many of whom had performed to standing ovations by the sold-out audience, had set the bar incredibly high. But their first sweet notes were a revelation, and after ION's own roaring standing O, it was obvious to all who the audience favorite and National Champions were. There are 12 tunes here, some of our favorites are a bluesy, finger-popping take on "The Christmas Song," "Christmas Medley," which blends "Once in Royal David's City," "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen" and "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" with innovative arrangements; a gentle lullaby new to our ears, "The Silver Stars are In the Sky" touched and moved us; "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, a big-band accompanied celebration; two Salsa band-accompanied versions of "Mary's Boy Child," one featuring James Morrison, and a pair of lovely, soaring, orchestra-accompanied songs, "Candlelight Carol" and "A Child is Born." The Pop-flavored title tune is also new to us, a joyous, Jazz band-accompanied greeting to the season. The a cappella "Angel" with its powerful "in the arms of the angel" chorus underscores the probable meanness of the nativity. We hold The Idea of North in a special place in our hearts and relate to "This Christmas" as a gift from this extraordinary quartet!

Songlist: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, The Christmas Song, Candlelight Carol, Mary's Boy Child, This Christmas, Angel, The Silver Stars are in the Sky, Once in Royal David's City, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Hark The Herald Angels Sing, A Child Is Born, Poverty, I'll Be Home For Christmas

Inner Voices : Christmas In My Dreams

Review: The four members of Inner Voices' bios read like a who's who of session recording. Practice has made perfect, and they are caroling at your door! The female soprano, alto and tenor (one of whom is Morgan Ames, Grammy winning arranger) and male baritone, along with guest vocalist Mervyn Warren of Take 6, have produced an immaculate recording. The luminous sound has been refined and honed until it shimmers. All four singers trade lines on "I Wash My Face in a Golden Vase" (accompanied by keyboard, as is "Christmas in My Dreams"). Soprano Donna McAfee soars on "The Savior is Born," gliding effortlessly up and down the scale with total precision. "Christmas Night in Harlem" captures that NewYork smoky jazz club vibe; "My Father" combines the mixolydian harmonic minor with the traditional Western carol for a haunting, enigmatic result. This sophisticated group satisfies the heart and the mind. Additional bonus of Guest artist Mervyn Warren.

Songlist: Christmas In My Dreams, De King Is Born Today, I Wash My Face In a Golden Vase, The Savior Is Born, Liz and Ralph and Calvin, Christmas Night In Harlem, Christmas Love Song, O COme With Us, My Father, Alegria, The Holly and the Ivy, Bright, Bright, the Holly Berries, O Holy Night, Have Yourself a Merr Little Christmas

Inner Voices : Greetings Of The Season

Review: Los Angeles-based four-woman, one man vocal jazz quintet brings us their long-awaited second Christmas album after their critically-acclaimed "Christmas In My Dreams" and "Prairie Jazz." The one man would be Morgan Ames, the group's producer, arranger and alto, and he is masterful at what he does, as are sopranos Shelby and Julie, tenor Sheri and baritone Michael. "Greetings" is a delicious, refreshing collection of 15 tunes, and some of our favorites include originals written by group members, such as Shelby Flint's lovely "State of Grace" and "Greetings Of The Season" and Morgan's romantic "Merry Christmas, Sweetheart." Also very fine are the bluesy "Silent Night," the slightly scary "Zat You, Santa Claus?," Sammy Cahn's "Christmas Waltz," Chas. Brown & Gene Redd's plaintive "Please Come Home for Christmas," John Wallowitch & G. Shocker's lyrical, nostalgic "A Christmas Journey," a jazzy, salsa-flavored "Jingle Bell Rock," Joe Van Winkle & R. Sherman's joyous "Christmas Time In New Orleans" and the moody "Carol Of The Wildwood," with additional lyrics by Morgan. Every Christmas season Inner Voices holds their sold-out, acclaimed Christmas show in LA, and given the great material we've heard on "Greetings of the Season," this year's will be particularly wonderful. There is some light accompaniment here, but we loved every cut on the album, so don't miss this one!

Songlist: Silent Night, State of Grace, We Need A Little Christmas, Zat You, Santa Claus, Carol of the Bells, Merry Christmas Sweetheart, Greetings of the Season, Christmas Waltz, Please Come Home For Christmas, I'll Be Home For Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, A Christmas Journey, Christmas Time In New Orleans, Christmas Time Is Here, Carol of the Wildwood

Lennon Sisters : Christmas With The Lennon Sisters

Review: Recorded in 1959 this is the Sister's first Christmas recording and one they have fond memories of. The lovely cover photo of the fresh-faced teens in velvet red dresses is of the age of when "Little Janet" singing "I Saw Mama Kissin Santa Claus" was a highlight of the legendary Lawrence Welk Christmas shows. "Winter Wonderland" was one of the very first songs the girls sang for Welk at a charity event and which led to their later frequent appearances on his show. This reissue is a classic and adds a wonderful touch of nostaligia to the season.

Songlist: Rudolf The Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Little Drummer Boy, Christmas Island, Adeste Fideles, I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, Silent Night, White Christmas, Jingle Bells, Away In A Manger, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Winter Wonderland, O Little Town Of Bethlehem, Joy To The World, I'll Be Home For Christmas

m-pact : Carol Commission onsale

Review: The Seattle quintet m-pact is just one of the best - and hippest - contemporary groups on the scene today. With unerring musical discernment, they drafted some of the most savvy arrangers to collaborate with them on "A Carol Commission": Randy Crenshaw, Michelle Weir, Yumiko Matsuoka-Young, Morgan Ames, Cedric Dent (of Take 6) et cetera. This marriage of technique and talent has propagated a fusion sound: the harmonic nucleus of jazz, but with so much more. Of the six tracks available for preview at presstime, the standouts are the "Little Drummer Boy," arranged by m-pact's own Matthew Selby; marked with vocal percussion, it has a retro seventies funk feel, a feel associated with the seventh and major/minor third of the blues pentatonic scale, which can be readily heard in the Motown-influenced bass line. "Caroling, Caroling," arranged by Randy Crenshaw, toys with meter amongst the parts, moving in and out of straight time and varying the rhythmic accents in unexpected places, like the handclap on the four, not the one of the beat. "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy" is incredible: a hip-hop jazz interpretation of this classical standard. "A Carol Commission" is an audacious project of most challenging musical caliber!

Songlist: Caroling, Caroling, Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy, Christmas Time Is Here, Little Drummer Boy, Jingle Bells, Snowfall, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Do You Hear What I Hear?, De King Is Born Today, As December Fades Away, Away In A Manger

Manhattan Transfer : The Christmas Album

Review: Produced by Johnny Mandel, who also arranged several songs, this orchestrated recording is as elegant and uptown as Fifth Avenue and the Rockefeller Center. A special guest appearance by Tony Bennett, singing "The Christmas Song" from an arrangement by Gene Puerling, adds extra sparkle, but every carol is meticulously produced. The big band glamour of the "Happy Holiday/Holiday Season Medley" rings all the bells, whereas " A Christmas Love Song" is quietly contemplative. "Snowfall" is arranged by both Puerling and Mandel, and "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" by Puerling; both are as ethereal and heavenly as a choir of angels.

Songlist: Snowfall, Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow,, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town/ Santa Man (Medley), The Christmas Song, Silent Night, Holy Night, Caroling, Caroling, Happy Holiday / the Holiday Season, A Christmas Love Song, It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, Have Yourself a Mery Little Christmas, Goodnight

New York Voices : Let It Snow

Review: Let It Snow finds New York Voices - Kim Nazarian, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader and Peter Eldridge - celebrating a host of traditional and sacred holiday classics as well as secular favorites. With the assistance of Grammy Award winning producer and engineer, Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Eagles, Manhattan Transfer, Fleetwood Mac), the quartet has fashioned an album that honors beloved songs, while incorporating sophisticated jazz and swing elements. Settings vary; a cappella performances mingle with robust arrangements featuring big band and studio orchestra accompaniment. The result is a diverse program of holiday standards, performed with surprisingly fresh treatments. The close harmony style that New York Voices embraces is a perfect sound for the holiday season. While the bulk of the arrangements are by founding member and tenor vocalist Damon Meader, additional orchestrators include Don Sebesky, Jorge Calendrelli, Pat Hollenbeck, and Michele Weir.

Songlist: Let It Snow, Christmas Song / Christmas Time, O Little Town of Bethlehem, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, We Three Kings, Holiday for Strings, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Sleepers, Wake, O Come, All Ye Faithful, The Merry Medley, I Wonder As I Wander, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, Silent Night

Pieces of 8 : Gift

Review: This unique Contemporary Jazz octet, founded by artistic director Charles Mead and formed of pairs of sopranos, altos, tenors and basses, has a full, almost vocally orchestral sound. "Gift" gives new dimensions and excitement to Christmas chestnuts like "Christmas Song," "Silver Bells," "Sleigh Ride," and three medleys, "Count Your Blessings/White Christmas," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/My Favorite Things"-- while retaining what we love about them. "Santa Claus" stuffs every song ever written about the fat man in a big, happy, silly, genre-crossing musical sack. "Little Drummer Boy" starts sweet and simple and riffs in all directions from there. There's a jazzy, surprising "12 Days of Christmas," a powerful "Prayer for Our Children," and a stream of consciousness "O Tannenbaum." A smoky, moody "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" closes out a remarkable "Gift" to yourself and any other music-lovers on your list!

Songlist: Christmas Song, Silver Bells, Sleigh Ride, Count Your Blessing / White Christmas, Little Drummer Boy, Twelve Days of Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/My Favorite Things, Coventry Carol, Prayer for Our Children, O Tannenbaum, Santa Claus, What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life?

Puppini Sisters : Christmas with

Review: This UK-based vocal trio brings three-part harmony into the modern age with a repertoire that includes everything from "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" to "I Will Survive." Inspired by the Oscar-nominated film the Triplets of Belleville (a French animated movie which features a '40s-style harmony group), The Puppini Sisters - Marcella Puppini, Kate Mullins, and Stephanie O'Brien - formed in London. Dressed in 1940's-style wardrobe, the three sing like the Andrews Sisters with inspiring harmonies. With their unique blend of retro style, pop kitsch, and crisp vocals, The Puppini Sisters have earned quite the celebrity following - from Sharon and Kelly Osbourne to Vivienne Westwood, Kate Moss and Stella McCartney to members of the Royal Family, including Prince Charles, Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince William. Come and celebrate Christmas in style and glamour with your favorite Sisters! Revel in the glamour, rejoice in the swing and lose yourself in the harmonies.

Real Group : Christmas out of print

Review: The Real Group, glorious, award-winning mixed-voice a cappella vocal quintet from Sweden, has long been one of the most respected and admired artists of vocal harmony music. In Sweden they represent the highest of musical and artistic quality, regardless of genre, and have collaborated with many of Sweden's finest musicians. Year after year, the group ranks among our best sellers. "Christmas," their second Christmas album, is simply marvelous and reflects the ample talents in both singing and arranging that have made them one of our favorites. Several tracks are in English including a great live 8-minute "American Christmas Medley" ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Rudolf the Rednosed Reindeer," "Frosty the Snowman," "Winter Wonderland," "Jingle Bells," "White Christmas" and a swinging, jazzy "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), plus John Lennon/Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas," and a bluesy "Hark the Herald Angels Sing". Most songs arranged by the amazing Anders Edenroth. 14 tunes in all, 'Christmas' is a highly recommended holiday treat for all a cappella fans!

Real Group : En Riktig Jul out of print

Review: Named "Best Holiday Album" at the 1998 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards, "En Riktig Jul" is a gossamer-fine collection of thirteen songs, sung in Swedish. While only "Stille Nacht" (Silent Night) is recognizable to us non-Swedes, the mood requires no translation. The Real Group's sound integrates the smoothest jazz progressions into an adult contemporary motif, creating a tonal landscape of unsullied purity. The bell chords of "Sang Till Karl-Bertil Johnsson, 14 ar" segue into an understated lead, spotlighted against an arpeggiated backdrop of notes, melting as they fall..."Glans Over Sjo Och Strand" sounds like a hopeful hymn of possibility to the coming year, while "Fridfull Och Stilla?" uses binary form to create a musical oxymoron: a rapidly descending series of fifths, juxtaposed between a slow and deliberate 3/4 processional.

Songlist: Stilla Natt, Bereden Vag For Herran, Det Ar En Ros Utsprungen, Sang Till Karl-Bertil Jonsson, Glans Over Sjo Och Strand, Sankta Lucia, Nar Det Lider Mot Jul, En Riktig Jul, Vem Skulle Vilja Ha En Jul Utan Jul, Julbocken, Fridfull Och Stilla?, Tomtarnas Julnatt, Sprakande Julmedley

Singers Unlimited : Christmas

Review: This 1972 recording continues to set musical precedent almost thirty years later. The combined voices of Don Shelton, Len Dresslar, Bonnie Herman and Gene Puerling are a sound so distinctive and recognizable that they have yet to be improved. From the six Alfred Burt carols to "Deck The Halls," "Good King Wenceslas" and Oh, Come All Ye Faithful," each song is beautifully constructed, a marriage of the traditional with the inimitable personality of Gene Puerling's arrangements. The result is accessible enough for the mainstream listener, and will also satisfy those hungry for heartier fare. Bonnie Herman frequently assumes the lead vocal duties, as on "Carol For Russian Children," her warm tone a sunbeam on a wintry day - listen to the pedal note (uncharacteristically in the treble part) she holds during the coda - amazing color and control. One of our most recommended selections.

Songlist: Deck The Halls, Ah Bleak & Chill The Wintry Wind, Bright, Bright The Holly Berries, Jesu Parvule, Caroling, Caroling, What Are The Signs, Nigh Bethlehem, While By My Sheep, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, Silent Night, Joy To The World, Wassail Song, Carol Of The Russian Children, Good King Wenceslas, Coventry Carol, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

SoVoSo : Crack The Nut

Review: 1997 Harmony Sweeps Winners, and one of our favorite soulful Aftro-Latin World/Jazz groups, Oakland-based SoVoSo celebrates the December, 2004 addition of a fifth member, veteran Bay Area vocalist Zoe Ellis, with their new CD, "Crack the Nut!" The innovative mixed-voice group, which cut their a cappella teeth performing with Bobby McFerrin, follows the Swingles off in an exciting new direction here, performing some of the best works of Tchaikovsky's beloved Nutcracker Suite. But where Ward Swingle's focus was generally replacing instruments with voices on classical music, SoVoSo employs the considerable arranging talents of David Worm, Bryan Dyer, Sunshine Becker and Joey Blake, and some surprising vocal percussion and faux electric guitar riffs to transform these songs into something quite their own. 9 songs: the moody "Reed Pipes" (which segues into an African chant), "Skaters and Jugglers" (which becomes a surreal reggae piece), "Spanish Dance" and "Mother Gigogne" (bright, folkish waltzes), "Russian Dance" (a very Swinglish cover), "Arabian Dance" (which becomes a rock anthem with screaming "guitars"), "Waltz of the Flowers" (a jazzy, scattish romp), "Sugar Plum Fairy" (with a Led Zeppelin flavor and a "Hernando's Hideaway" sample), finishing with the lovely ethereal, breezy "Finale Waltz." In our opinion, "Crack the Nut!" is on track to win SoVoSo another CARA award, and to create many more fans for this exceptionally talented group!

Songlist: Reed Pipes, Skaters & Jugglers, Spanish Dance, Mother Gigogne, Russian Dance, Arabian Dance, Waltz of the Flowers, Sugar Plum Fairy, Finale Waltz

SoVoSo : Seasonings onsale

Review: Anyone who lights up their days of the Holiday Season with vocal music (and especially those who saw the group at the West Coast Summit and Sweeps Finals) must have SoVoSo's latest release, "Seasonings." This world-renowned ensemble has mixed together a wonderful recipe of songs that span their diverse cultural and rhythmic background, from a jazzy swing version of "Drummer Boy," a worldly chant of "O Come Emmanuel," and a classic and soaring "O Holy Night" with original songs that include Joey Blake's infectious "Holiday Season" and Sunshine Becker's portrait of the holiday Southwest style in "Christmas in Questa." The magic and light of the holidays are truly captured on this special and much awaited CD.

Swingle Singers : Christmastime

Review: Well, isn't this a treat! From the beginning of "the French Swingles" 10 years was spent touring. Between tours they recorded 12 albums, moving chronologically from Bach and Handel to Telemann, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and some early 20th Century Spanish composers. In between, there was a Christmas album and one with the Modern Jazz Quartet. They were all done in that traditional jazz-classic mode: scatting to a light rhythmic background. What we have in our hands is a CD release of that Christmas album, "Noels Sans Passeport" which was released in America as "Christmastime" in 1968. This is an international work par excellence which features songs from America, France, Germany, Norway, Holland, Spain, Russia, Italy, and Denmark. As all of the Swingle's work in those early days, the tunes were scatted so no language lessons are required. There isn't much that hasn't been written already about the group, but if you are a Swingle's fan this is a must and if you've never been introduced, now is the time for they were, and are, one of the most important groups in the world of a cappella music. Joyeux Noel!

Songlist: Jingle Bells, Il Est Ne Le Divin Enfant, Es Ist Ein Ros' Entsprungen, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The First Nowell, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, Sill Nacht, Heilige Nacht, Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly, What Child is This?, O Jul Med Din Glede, Komt, Verwondert U Hier Mensen, Away In A Manger, Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes, Oh Tannenbaum, Bel Astre Que J'Adore, El Noi De La Mare, Hanej, Nynej, Jezisku, Canzone Dei Zampognari, We Three Kings of Orient Are, The Holly and the Ivy, La Peregrinacion, White Christmas, Stchedrivka, Dag Visen, O Sanctissima

Swingle Singers : Story Of Christmas onsale

Review: Primarily A Cappella is proud to be re-releasing the ever-popular Swingle Singers recording of "The Story Of Christmas". Formerly out of print, the continued demand for this recording is extraordinary, and a tribute to thjis English group about which the Los Angeles Times extolled "Everything about the Swingles is flawless". They take a collection of traditional carols and hymns ("The Boar's Head Carol, And Is It True?") and mix it with some modern songs (Jester Hairston's "Mary's Boy Child") to tell the story of Christmas. This is a well thought out arrangement of songs to tell the tale that we know so well with interesting and varied songs.

Songlist: Hodie Christus Natus Est (Traditional), O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (Traditional), Hymn To The Virgin (Britten), Gabriel's Message (Traditional), Mary's Boy Child (Rathbone), And Is It True? (Betjeman, Parry), Un Flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle (Traditional), Quem Pastores (Traditional), Shepherds' Farewell (Berlioz), We Three Kings (Hopkins), Coventry Carol (Traditional), Carol Medley (Traditional), The Oxen (Rathbone), The Boars Head Carol (Traditional), Christmas Song (Torme, Wells), Jingle Bells (Traditional), I Believe In Father Christmas (Sinfeld, Lake), White Christmas, The Twelve Days Of Christmas (Traditional), Silent Night (Gruber)

Swingle Singers : Unwrapped

Review: The Swingle Singers are comfortable in many musical genres, particularly jazz and salsa, and "Unwrapped," their second holiday album, showcases this versatility. The free-flowing, almost scattish jazz interpretation of classical music that first made them famous is evident on Corelli's "Christmas Concerto," while Darke's "In the Bleak Midwinter" is more traditional a cappella. Different, but equally powerful interpretations are given to classic Christmas songs and carols: a sexy "Santa Baby," "Let it Snow," a slow, jazzy "Away In A Manger" and John Lennon's "Happy Christmas (War is Over)." Other beloved tunes, "Christmas Song," "River," "Walking in the Air," "Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!" "O Tannenbaum," "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," "Carol of the Drum," "Amazing Grace," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Last Christmas," and "Hotaru no Hikari" are like reaching into our stocking and finding more and more cool presents. A gift to yourself or loved ones should be "Unwrapped!"

Songlist: Concerto Grosso Op. 6 No. 8, In the Bleak Midwinter, Christmas Song, River, Walking in the Air, Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Voice Trek : Christmas Live

Review: It's a contemporary jazz Christmas with bright, talented Voice Trek, Shelley Plaster, Vicki Plaster, Rae Plaster, Denis Allaire and Kevin Smith. There's only one a cappella cut on this CD, "Coventry Carol"- that said, the jazz accompaniment is hot, and this CD cooks! This is a great CD to heat up the crowd at your Christmas party. "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" grabs you and slaps an eggnog in your hand. Just listen to the scat singing on "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." 12 songs, mostly of brilliantly arranged carols you may or may not recognize. Look out, Old Santa's back!

Songlist: It's The Most Wonderful Time of The Year, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, Coventry Carol, Do Your Hear What I Hear?, Snowfall, Happy Holidays / The Holiday Season, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Let It Snow, Silent Night, Go Tell It To The Mountain, Hallelujah!

Voice Trek : The Spirit Of Christmas

Review: Three sisters - Rae, Vicki and Shelley - are the core of this mixed group's clean and contemporary jazz sound. About half accompanied, the CD begins with a Gene Puerling arrangement of "The Christmas Song" (a second Puerling chart, "Deck The Halls," is a cappella). Michele Weir's version of "A Child Is Born" (certainly one of the loveliest of Christmas carols) includes a vocal trombone solo by Denis Allaire. Phil Mattson's a cappella "Here We Come A Caroling" offsets the first verse with a delightful four-bar countermelody; it's these little touches that elevate a song from the pedestrian to the remarkable.

Songlist: The Christmas Song, God Rest Ye Merry Gentelmen, Here We Come a Caroling, Mary's Lullaby, Deck the Halls, Sleigh Ride, A Child is Born, Ah Bleak & Chill the Wintery Mind, Jingle Bells, We Wish You a Merry Christmas

Voice Trek : Voices Of Light

Review: An American six-piece ensemble featuring three sisters, Voice Trek has a fluid sound as smooth and light as just-fallen snow. The CD is mostly accompanied by piano and a restrained orchestra, and also combines elements of nature, such as birds chirping, church bells and valley streams. These added elements are pleasant and are used harmoniously, as in the gusts of wintery wind that introduce "The First Noel." "O Come, O Come Emanuel," "Lo, How A Rose E're Blooming" and "The Coventry Carol" are strictly a cappella.

Songlist: The First Noel, Sussex Carol, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Lo, How a Rose E're Blooming, O Holy Night!, I Wonder As I Wander, Coventry Carol, What Child Is This?, Still, Still, Still, Silent Night, The Wexford Carol, Ave Maria

Review: Jazz educator, Michele Weir, has thoughtfully created a fresh new treatment of the timeless Alfred Burt classic, "Caroling, Caroling". The 5/4 meter creates a rhythmic and energetic feel. Michele's use of harmonic twists adds to the thrill of this unaccompanied work. A must for any choir that sings a cappella. "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" - Tight jazz harmonies give new dimension to this traditional holiday favorite. This a cappella gem is a great way for high school, college, or community choirs; vocal jazz groups; or concert choirs to end their Christmas concerts. This new musical setting of "Bethlehem" the familiar hymn text with additional original text is the newest addition to our Jazz for Christmas Series. "Bethlehem" features an a cappella introduction and tight, jazz harmonies that build to a dramatic modulation in the piano accompaniment. The solo provides an opportunity for ad-libbing in pop/jazz style. The humorous a cappella work "New Dance for the Sugar Plum Fairy" is a reduction of the original orchestral work from The Nutcracker Suite. Michele Weir is known for her vocal jazz arrangements, but this choral is a departure from the familiar. Here Michele has crafted this familiar holiday favorite with adorable lyrics by Amy Engelhardt (The Bobs) into a choral work that is delightful and fun to learn and perform.

Various Arrangers : Men's Jazz Holiday

Review: "All On A Christmas Morning" is one of the least performed but most hauntingly beautiful of the Alfred Burt Christmas carols, this male chorus version features tight four-and five-part voicings and jazz reharmonizations throughout, a rare step-out solo for the second bass, followed by another step-out solo for the first tenor. Rangy, but worthy addition to any Christmas program. This arrangement of "Away In A manger" seeks to give the lyrics their proper focus. It very effectively catches the mood that was intended with the lyrics, alternating shimmering harmonies with unison lines. Each member of the quartet is featured with one verse per person. This jazz waltz arrangement of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" is reminiscent of Blue Rondo a la Turk. The top tenor has the melody throughout, sung sweetly above the energetic rhythmic bed of the others. Other than a few slightly tongue twisting lines, this arrangement is not at all difficult, but it is very effective. "What Are The Signs?" This little Alfred Burt Christmas carol is effective on its own or as a prelude to other carols in the program, especially other Burt carols. It begins with a Gregorian chant effect with all voices in a very quiet, low unison, then opens into a beautiful four-part male chorale in its second half. Requires good low range in the second bass part.

Various Arrangers : Vocal Jazz Christmas 4

Review: 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' is A wonderful arrangement by one of the great arrangers, Morgan Ames. 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' is short and sweet, as fast as you can sing it. It is sung with hums and oo's, no lyrics. The feeling is humorous with traditional harmonies. 'Boogie Woogie Santa' has a 40's, slightly big band feel for voices with a soprano lead. The tempo is lively with pop harmonies. This is a fun, not serious tune. 'Santa Claus is Comin' to Town' is a blend of the Motown (Jackson 5) and rock (Bruce Springsteen) versions of this modern seasonal classic, this driving yet easy to sing arrangement makes for a perfect holiday closer or encore. Melody in soprano line which can be sung as a solo or section. Vocal percussion is optional. The beautiful carol, 'Some Children See Him,' by Alfred Burt and Whila Hutson opens with a tenor solo, soon joined by a warm background chorus. Serene yet gently moving forward with subtle meter and key changes. Little moments for every part to shine. Can be a wonderful counterpoint to the more up-tempo Christmas songs.

Review: 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' is a sweet, heartfelt, close harmony arrangement of this holiday classic featuring a rich baritone solo line and plenty of Puerlingesque harmonies. Based on Greensleeves (traditional) with a warmer lyric 'Once Upon a Christmastime' includes many solo lines meant for free interpretation. 'Some Children See Him' is a Christmas standard written in the 50's by Los Angeles session singer, Alfred Burt. Burt's original changes are reinterpreted in this great arrangement by Morgan Ames. Based on Silent Night sung without words until the last line, 'Silent (Sleep In Heavenly)' has many short solo lines meant for free interpretation. 'Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town' is transformed into a hard-swingin', lighthearted arrangement. It features solos for a male and female, a half chorus scat solo, and a big shout chorus finish. Light vocal percussion and a strong bass singer are necessary. You will love this harmonically challenging, yet rewarding piece!
